once done, the scanner is of limited value and you have to put more effort into
selling it. Cheap scanners do a relatively poor job, the scanning services all
use the best scanners. Etc.

The scanning services are run by people who are pretty expert at the task and
they do it efficiently and well, at a modest cost per photo. Scanning the
family archive is a one-time task for most people … get the whole lot done, pay
whatever it costs, and you're done: enjoy the photos.

I've had good luck with ScanCafe.com … I've arranged and managed the scanning
process with them for several of my old clients (when I was still working).
Their prices are reasonable, and they give you some options in the kind of
quality and costs, depending on your need/use of the photos.

Good luck.

The scanners run $200-$600 depending on quality (Epson FastFoto

Have two of the M575s in use, a spare, and an older version. All have

Many thanks. Doug for the significant  contribution you have made over
the yearsand to all who contribute here.   For two decades plus,
I've enjoyed the entertainment, skill sharpening information, etc. I've
been a Pentax user since '68.  I joined the group looking to sharpen my
skills when I needed to obtain better photographic results to support a
new professional foray into the realm of forensics.  I was not
disappointed.   And, I surely have enjoyed the entertainment.  I'm well
into retirement now and the plans I once had to purchase a camera like
the K1, have changed to focus on something small that i can carry around
with ease and not worry about packing lenses around.   Although, I must
admit that I'm tempted from occasionally to purchase a digital camera to
go behind my M42 glass.

I do thank you all.  It has been a pleasant and quite educational journey.

Wishing all of you  the very best in the New Year.

sort of.

During the Christmas season of 2000, while I worked on a museum
project for a local university, I got a call from Don Nelson, a friend
and Pentax sales guy some of you will remember from GFM. He told me
that Pentax USA, which carried the PAML and PDML on its website, was
looking to get out of the email list game because of potential
liability issues arising from unsanctioned and borderline dangerously
irresponsible technical and repair advice getting posted to the PDML.

Don then asked if I knew anyone who could take it over. I thought
about a few members I knew at the time, even reached out to one or
two, who pretty much laughed, and I reported back to Don that there
didn't seem to be much interest. He said ok.

A couple days later, a nice woman from the marketing department at
Pentax called to tell me she had heard from Don that I would like to
be considered for the role of List Guy. After a long pause, followed
by some muttering and me repeating "wait, what?" a few times, the nice
woman in marketing assured me that Don said I was very interested.

That was Don, as those of you who knew him would agree.

I told the nice woman that I was not a list guy by any stretch of the
imagination. I wasn't a software guy, didn't know anything about how
to run an email list, was in all things comprehensively incompetent
and liked it that way, and so on.

The nice woman in marketing was unimpressed, so it was decided. I
begrudgingly agreed that I would download some list software packages
and see if I could make any sense of them. After that, I said, I'd get
back to her in a week or so with my decision. The nice woman in
marketing rang off.

That afternoon I found and downloaded some software, installed it, and
poked around for a few minutes until I had to do something with my
actual job. The only thing I had really discerned from my brief time
with the software was that I was out of my depth and needed some
serious hours with it before I could even begin to think about whether
or not I would take over the PDML.

Some time that night the PDML broke.

The next day, the nice woman in marketing called to tell me that the
guy who worked at the advertising agency that handled the Pentax USA
website and was the only one there who knew the list software and how
it interfaced with the website was off on Christmas vacation and the
server was down and hey, she would email me a list of everyone who was
subscribed to the PDML. Good luck and godspeed, it was now my baby.

I still can't tell you how I got it going, but here we are, and I'm
grateful for it.

Happy New Year, kids.

I’ve never made a print of this particular image so I wanted to go back in and
make sure everything was just right. One problem with lightroom panoramas is
that you can’t specify to use a certain piece from a certain image. Their
whole stitching process is opaque and unpredictable, but I was eventually able

recall ... reasonable, certainly acceptable quality. Sent our PAL
tapes from our decade or so in 'Oz out for commercial
conversion...results were quite good.

We sent our 8mm out and results were acceptable as there was a fair
amount of degradation and it took a bit of restoration to get to
"acceptable." Also, they took good care of fragility that developed on
some tapes.

Re: Where is everyone?

2015-03-21 Thread Otis C. Wright, Jr.
I found the PDML via a Pentax site search in the early 90s. Always
enjoyed the flame wars---some of them anyway, but never enough time to
read all the messages back then.

Stated with Kodak brownies in grade school. Graduated to an Argus C3 in
High School. Picked up a Petri () in college. In 1968, when my
career started taking me to many foreign destinations, I picked up a
Spotmatic along at 28mm and 135mm lens. In 1974, I picked up a
Spotmatic F (which I still have, its been rebuilt a couple times) no
change in lenses. In the 90s, I picked up a 300mm and 100mm Macro,
some other odds and ends, and a couple of ESIIs on ebay while the F was
in the hospital, which I'll probably give away one of these days.

I went digital early in the 2000s with a Coolpix 990 followed by a 5000,
two 8400s and finally a 7700. Still have all but the 5000, which wore
out.I found that the small size and reasonable price of these fit
well into the field work environment I used them for---need for mobility
made it hard to carry a large bag of equipment, leaving anything
unattended risked damage and/or theft. I also found that I very much
like the Nikon Speedlight flash system. I currently have a couple of
SB800s.

Am currently toying with the idea of picking up a K3 for existing light
work and to possible get to use a few of my old Pentax lenses again.
Drawback is size, need to go to a new flash system, and much less field
work where I really needed better existing light capability.

If the camera could read them, did you try to process the files in

and have it write to new files which might be usable??

I'm not even aware of that capability. I never muck about with shots
in-camera. Would have been worth trying if I could coerce the camera
to copy the file from the bad card to a 2nd one.

But if it only writes back to the same card this wouldn't have helped
as the Mac refused to have anything to do with the card at all. Which
itself is unusual as repairing damaged formating has always been
supported for USB sticks and floppies, etc.

Rob, you should try this processing trick if it can be done.

Also, would it be better to replace both cards at the same time
rather than

just one?

I only had a single brand new SanDisk 32Gig 45mb/s Extreme (like
Rob's) to start with, which is the one that experienced this problem.
I bought a second identical one, formatted both in camera, and have
been using them together without a hitch since. I wasn't about to toss
the card considering the price and that it was likely only a soft
formatting issue of some kind. But by enabling dual-write I figured I
was safe to continue going to see what would happen.

The other dumb question, of course, is can the files be transferred by
plugging the camera directly into a computer?

Re: OT: Need recommendation for computer video card

2009-12-22 Thread Otis C. Wright, Jr.
I'm running ATI Radeon 4850 with two wide screen 24 inch displays
currently under W7 64-bit with no problems whatsoever. Quite happy with
the set up. Have connected other screens including CRTs over the year
I've had the system. I haven't calibrated the color yet on this system
as I'm using another system for most of my photo/imaging work. Next
years challenge is to move everything over to the W7 computer. Also, I
am thinking of adding another ATI unit early in the New Year.

tale.

The last two times, a year apart, much more recently were by a kid I
had hired to do some work for me (basically the stepson of a friend)
shortly before the first time. He got busted the second time because
he tried selling CDs with my initials on them and the store called the
cops.

After the first time he ripped me off, I installed locks on a couple
of interior doors. That is what saved my cameras that time. They were
in a locked room and he apparantly didn't want to take the time to
kick the door in. Sometimes, that is all it takes.

I'm in the process of doing some fairly major work on the house. When
I'm done, I will have a locking closet/server room. I plan on paneling
the walls in such a way that when the door is closed, it may not be
perfectly hidden, but chances are that unless you're looking for a
door, you won't notice it.

Speaking of that project, anybody have weblinks for a good source of
concealed hinges? In addition to that door, I'd like to replace the
hole in the floor where my fireplace hearth used to be with a trap
door with hidden hinges and latch.

FWIW I've been a regular visitor to Melbourne for almost 40 years, since my
teens. I have a pretty fair idea what it's like. Melbourne braggadocio can
be wearing, though, in a way that only the residents of Australia's other
cities can appreciate. Just recently I had to listen to a one eyed
Melbournian assert that Australia's best beaches are guess where?
Queensland's Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast? Perth's glorious surfing
beaches? The north coast of New South Wales around Byron Bay? No,
Australia's best beaches are... (drum roll)in Melbourne of course. Aaack.

 Here's Melbourne's most famous beach:

Here are my neighbourhood beaches in Sydney, not even the most famous:
 http://tinyurl.com/62urno

 http://maps.google.com.au/maps?f=qhl=engeocode=q=freshwater+beach+2096sl
 l=-25.335448,135.745076sspn=68.730338,117.421875ie=UTF8t=hll=-33.78143,1
 51.290836spn=0.032459,0.057335z=14

 Incredible.

 Yesterday a Sydney restaurant, Tetsuya's, made number 9 in a world's best
restaurants list. A few months ago a different list put Tetsuya's at number
4 IIRC. Nothing from Melbourne was anywhere close. If only I got 5 cents
every time I heard that Australia's best restaurants are in Melbourne, I'd
 be a rich man.

Melbourne's not bad, it's nice. My home city, Sydney, is by comparison a
blousy old tart with petticoats rumpled and disarrayed. Some of my most
pleasing city scenes have been shot in Melbourne, however it's difficult to
get a pleasing angle on Sydney that isn't already clichéd.

But IMO, as someone in this corner of the world, Melbourne's creative scene
is insufferably pretentious and arrogantly self-superior. And not as good
as it claims. Sputnikagency isn't remarkably bad, it's typical.

 Regards,
 Anthony Farr.

I'm not sure rose whatever help that much Basic front office
management philosophy/attitudes discourage interest in forays into
somewhat (possible?) lucrative niche markets. Also, it seems to me
that in the last decade or so, soft support and distribution costs have
started to swamp out basic product adaptive development, which could
make potential profits from such programs hard to demonstrate after
discounting for risk. Just a few thoughts from the bleachers. My
guess is that such support is more likely to come from third
party/second tier sources where business model often differs.

Personally, based on recent product support experience, I'm beginning to
think that digital products in this arena will have a shorter life span
than their manual /analog predecessors. Just, one person's experience.

brethren due to mechanical/electronic failure more than sheer
obsolescence. I really don't expect my lenses or any one else's to
become obsolescent over night, some I've had for over 20 years and I'd
hope that they'll be useful for at least that again. State of the art
bodies to mount them on would help though.

Joined NAPP for the magazine when I purchased Photoshop a few years

continues to benefit from the tutorials.

Have recovered a large portion of the investment from promotional

2006-12-27 Thread Otis C. Wright, Jr.
I'd say twice is the Magic number to trigger return. Some intermittent
shorts clear on the first shot especially those that happen in the first
days. The second occurrence indicates that didn't happen and one can
expect the problem to recur --- very often damaging and/or substantially
shortening the life of critical components. I suggest trying for a
replacement unless you are somehow convinced that they found and FIXED
the problem. An intermittent can be/is tough to find and the nature of
the fault precludes one from a timely verification of the repair when
the camera is returned.I'd try for replacement on the basis of
manufacturing/design defect etc., etc., etc. or whatever.

Good Luck.

carry primary camera(s) in briefcase.

Interested in comments from anyone who has used this case as a carry-on

Secondarily, also looking for a case maybe two thirds the size of the

There are benefits to the independent contractor as well. It's not a
one-sided proposition. A number of friends have been independent
contractors with major corporations. One just recently accepted regular
employment, and while we didn't discuss her situation in detail, she made
it clear that there were some downsides to her new position. She has to
work more regular hours; her take-home pay is less; she has to work
assignments that she doesn't care for ...sure, she gets medical benefits,
but she was easily able to pay for that from her IC income, and had a wider
choice of doctors to choose from with her own plan. Now she's tied in to
her company's plan. After carefully weighing the options, she decided to
become an employee. That works for her.

Another friend is, and has been, an IC for another major corp. He prefers
to stay an IC even though he's been offered regular employment. It's
interesting to note that his wife works at the same company, and when she
was offered the opportunity to be an employee, she took it. The benefits
to her outweighed the downside that her husband saw.

It's not so simple.

At one point I had 32 IC's working for my company. None - not a single one
- wanted to be a regular employee, all of them much preferring the
advantages they saw in remaining independent.

Couldn't resist having operated on both sides (currenlty on the IC
bench): Maybe they just saw the deficiencies in what your company had to
offer. Fact is, Congress sets the advantage on many for the employed
and the employer. Although the IC may preceive ssignificant advantages,
the IC must be very careful to manage to advantage if that person is
to end up even or better at the end of the day. My experience is that
a large number do not and are, in real terms, sometimes significantly
disadvantaged as the sun sets. Just my experience.

And while it's true that there are benefits that accrue to the company in
having independent contractors, there are also benefits to having those
people as employees as well. It all depends on the situation, what's most
important to the parties involved, and individual values.

None. The benefits are all to the employer. All the years I
worked for Shutterbug magazine they classed me as an independent
contractor. That means they didn't have to pay into unemployment or
deal with payroll taxes, include me on company medical insurance, and
so on. It also means that when I voluntarily retired, there was no

Yep. That's why my advice for Dell buyers is to wipe the hard drive

situations that would suggest a cost/effective benefit in doing so. I
gave up playing with PC's about ten years ago, I just want a platform to
run applications on. My experience suggest changing the software
configuration too much could result in grief from the support chain, but
that is just my experience. I haven't had any trouble adding software
--- takes some time now and then, but it gets done.

Each installation/user combo has limits and objectives that need to be
factored into setting up and configuring the system software and support
facilities. My experience suggests some of the generalizations
surfacing here are just a bit counterproductive. IMHO...

Nothing, if you understand what you get when you read open circuit
voltage and these results are acceptable for your application. Depends
on the accuracy you want. My experience has been that testing
batteries under load gives more accurate indication of status.I
could, but am not interested in doing so, assemble a load/meter combo
using the manufacturers data. Assembly is relatively easy.
Calibration/test and packaging for field use takes time I'd rather spend
doing something else. I was looking for a prepackaged reasonable
quality unit for field use in assessing cells used randomly in a
standby/backup application.

Understand. Your approach makes sense for you requirement. In my
case, the cells are in reserve/backup circuit. Load is applied randomly
for varying period. There is no meaningful indication over a given
period how much capacity has been used, etc. etc.

Whenever I buy batteries, particularly Li disposables, I put a date
on them and put them into my battery box. I know Li disposables have
a 6-7 year shelf life ... after a year, they will rarely have lost
more than 5% total capacity. I rarely do this, but if I have been
using a particular set and taken it out of the camera, I mark it with
a red dot to say partially used. The reason I rarely do this is
that it's generally speaking not common to just swap batteries in and
out with Li disposables. Most of the time you just keep them in the
camera until they are exhausted and replace them.

When putting together equipment for a trip or field session and
counting on Li disposables, I just make sure I have an appropriate
number of unused new batteries as backup. I've never been caught out.

Re: Rules or guidelines

Seems sensible. Time for me to head back to the bleachers. Enjoy.

the years more unwritten guidelines have developed. Just as many lists have
rules, why not have a set of guidelines. It won't harm anyone, but will
guide members through to fine postings.

Hi paul,

As Otis says, there are no rules.

Look at it this way - if there are no rules, then all you can do is
hypthesize in your own mind, by taking particular events to a probable
conclusion (you following this??) thus:
Scenario 1:

You decide that, as this is an unmoderated list, you want to continue
posting eBay auctions at your discretion. Well that's fine and dandy.
Unfortunately, what will happen then is that it's highly likely that
someone else will chip in and ask you to stop, which of course, being an
unmoderated list, is quite likely. Then you will find a few others
chipping in with reasons why it's not a bad thing, until the argument
becomes very polarised, and 2 camps develop. This is not good. Eventually
a flame war will develop, and one or two, possibly several people will
unsubscribe (and the rest of us will sit back and breathe a sigh of
relief that it's over, and carry on regardless ;-) and it will die down.
Scenario 2: You decide that, as you quite like Pentax gear, and quite
like discussing it on an email list, you won't post about eBay auctions
willy nilly - eg as a matter of course - and keep those happy who have in
themselves decided to object, even though there is absolutely no basis
for there objections *on an unmoderated list*. Hence, discussions stay
civil, and most folk are happy. There is no flame war about eBay
auctions, and things stay nice and quiet.
Scenario 3: You decide you don't like either of the above, and unsubscribe.

***

When I first joined the list, the exact same thing happened to me, and at
first I could not understand why anyone would object. Oh but I was young
(er) and naive in those days. Someone bollocked me - maybe even Uncle
Bill - and I think I pointed out the helpful nature of my postings
regarding this eBay auction or that eBay auction. But then a strange
thing happened to me. It was called 'enablement'.
I started watching some auctions because I wanted to buy some lenses
after reading about other people's experiences here on the PDML. I found
that, as I was watching an auction, I turned from a kind, placid
individual into some sort of financial whizz-kid, enduring a white-
knuckle ride as the seconds ticked down to the close of the auction. The
very last thing I wanted was somebody posting about it here of all
places! And I realised what Bill and the others were concerned about.
I can see both sides - the internet (and especially email lists like this
one) are primarily about communicating with your fellow (wo)man and
wanting to be helpful. That's what everyone does here. Yet buying and
selling gear - what most of us do at some time - means we would perhaps
not want to be *too* helpful sometimes.
It really is a dilemma. I figured that the benefits of staying quiet,
outweighed the disadvantage of upsetting members. But even so, there are
no rules, it just sorta comes naturally. Like gowing down to a small pub
- the regulars' names are not plastered on their chairs, but by God if
you sit in one, you might as well drink in a small dark room!
Kindest regards,

Cheers,
 Cotty

It was a good bit of information all of this projectionist

thanks from here in the bleachers. Go shoot some film.

Well, this is not a moderated list, Paul. However, there are
somethings that have been agreed upon by the long time PDMLers. The
thing about not posting leads to Ebay auctions other than your own has
the most support of any of those unwritten rules. Even the ban on
talking about guns (the most controversal subject to hit the list) has
less support.

No you are not going to get kicked off the list if you insist upon
continuimg to post Ebay listings, but you are not going to be very
well liked either. Don't feel like we are attacking you here, Paul, we
are just trying to give you, and others, a heads up on this.

Besides, anyone too dumb to be able to type in an Ebay search for
pentax can't be helped anyway. ;)

Hi Bob,

are you a moderator? I take your point, but saw many postings where
people
were asking for Pentax gear so I thought I'd point out a few. This is
ebay
Germany mind you, not USA. And as for prices going up, so what? It's
only
fair to share opportunities I feel.

Paul,

This is the 5th or 6th time you have mentioned eBay auctions to the
list.
Many people on this list follow eBay closely for bargains on Pentax
gear.
In the past, they have become irritated by the posting of live
auctions to
the list.

If you are the seller, it is fine to mention your auction, but if
not...
Calling the attention of 400 Pentax enthusiasts to an interesting or
cheap
item
is a certain way to get it's price bid-up and make bargains disappear.
There is always somebody on the list who is willing and able to pay
more
than you.

Three points on the medical set you highlighted.
1) This is sold by TEAM-PHOTO. There is a separate thread running
on this
list about how they are a problem to deal with.
2) They have been listing this set for the past 3 months. I have
personally seen it close without any bidders at least 4 other times.
3) Their price is way too high. This is a Pentax ringlight flash
and a
Pentax F or FA100/2.8 Macro. US$550 would be a good retail price.
US$350
would be closer to a bargain.

Your enthuisam is great. You should spend some time at Boz's site
as it is
a virtual encyclopedia on Pentax K-Mount gear. Ask your questions
about the
gear, just don't bombard us with eBay links.

Regards, Bob S.

Re: What the...

The biggest problems I run into with repair orders these days are 1) the
repair instructions are ignored, and 2) the item is not checked (I mean
no checks) for spec compliance after repairs. These arise with
ever more frequency and I suggest that wherever possible one make
provisions for these possibilities in procurement procedures.

After 2 weeks of waiting, my MX was finally ready to be pick up this
afternoon. Consider they asked C$190 for labour C$35 for parts, they
must did hell of a job to ask that much. I attached my FA24 and
brought the camera outside the service centre and see if it focused at
infinity. Shocking, totally shocking!!! The lens hit infinity when the
subject is 1 meter away. I knew something was wrong and talked to the
guy, and he didn't believe me and said it was my lens (why am I not
surprised by his reaction?). He tried 2 of his own lenses and
confirmed the problem. Needless to say, I was totally fed up. What
else did they fix if the focus wasn't fixed properly. I check the
printed invoice carefully and it explicitly said focus adjusted (yeah
right). And to make the matter worse, they adjust the meter and
replaced the velvet straps with the foams. Gee... I did not even ask
for that because the meter was dead on and the straps were in tip top
condition. What the hell were they thinking? I had those velvet straps
installed 2 years ago and now I have to paid extra just because of
their idiotic mistake? They didn't fix anything I requested, but
fixed things that were perfectly fine. How the hell they stay in
business if they could not even do a simple job like this??? And $35
for those stupid foams? Gee... I think I am ready to smash the MX
right in front of the manager if he couldn't give me a satisfied
answer next Tuesday. Sorry I have to vent here, I feel better now...

Re: eBay Dilema

2003-07-30 Thread Otis C. Wright, Jr.
In like situations, I have found the full refund route (cancel by mutual
agreement) to be the most successful overall solution. Not always the
most profitable, but it will usually move you to high ground and often
put pressure on the buyer to play it straight. My recent daily work
routine has taught me that there are some who just have to push the
envelope a bit, especially when its hard or expensive to establish the
truth of the matter.

I recently sold a lens on eBay, when the buyer received it he said there was a tiny bit of fungus on the front element which could only be seen at the right angle and that if he sold the lens he wouldn't get what he paid for it (a strange thing to say in my opinion). I checked had the lens thoroughly when I first bought it and before listing it on eBay and didn't notice anything at all... it is possible I missed it of course. I immediately offered a full refund including postage costs for the return of the lens. I got a reply saying that he'd taken the lens to a camera shop and they said it wasn't fungus but a slight parting of the elements and that it wouldn't affect pictures. The buyer then said if he sold it he would still get less that the bid price, clearly indicating that he wanted me to give him a rebate of £20 or so.

What should I do? I usually notice the tinniest marks on things and maybe this is a scam; simply a way of getting some money back. On the other hand I could have missed it and the buyer is being genuine.
