Re: NAS

I'm considering putting together a 1TB or so NAS box or device to live on my at-home 1GBps Ethernet LAN. Right now, I'm keeping the archive on a set of external (eSATA and USB) hard drives. I'm finding that it'd be convenient to keep a copy online all of the time. I've been happy with the 4-drive RAID 10 in my main machine, but I want to put the online archive on a separate box of some sort. Any recommendations on gear to get or to avoid? I'm thinking I'd do another 4-drive RAID 10 setup with 500 GB (or maybe 1TB) drives commodity 7200 RPM SATA-II drives. Here is a site that you may find interesting: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/ Performance difference between various NAS solutions can be very big, and it is worth considering before buying one, especially if you want it to use for photo archiving. First - it is reset to program when camera goes to sleep (metering is switched off) second, it won't work when you use flash. My friend did some comparison tests between Planar T* 45/2 and Pentax SMC-FA 50/1.4. Planar won hands down, you can see the results here (don't try to read comments, it's in Polish ;-) http://www.pentax.org.pl/viewtopic.php?t=3797highlight=planar AF is somewhat noisy but reliable and quite fast, working even in complete darkness (red pattern assist in G1, IR active assist in G2). As a bonus you get nice handling and exposure system SLR-like. One thing that most people should try before is viewfonder - quite small and requires you to look straight into. But if you can get used to that results will be just great! Re: What Hoya has to say now
I don't think Hoya will close Pentax camera division, especially SLR one, which is profitabe. And that's what exactly financial analysts say: What Hoya should do from now is build on Pentax's strengths in endoscopes, SLR cameras and optical devices,'' Hisashi Moriyama, a Tokyo-based analyst with JP Morgan Securities Co., said by telephone. Hoya should have no problem raising Pentax's profitability with its existing products.'' The K10D has a great viewfinder compared to the competition and the Pentax viewfinder is the one thing I miss with the 20D which is smaller and not as bright (not as good as the K10D or 1DII but not nearly as awful as the digirebels or ANY Olympus). That's sad true. I was comparing viewfinder in Olympus E-1 (the biggest and the brightest so far in 4/3 cameras) with Nikon D70. And a 10-megapixel camera cheaper than the K10D makes sense from a marketing standpoint and probably wouldn't be too difficult for the engineers to whip up. Yeah, yeah, yeah, rumours, rumours :-) This guy is ALMOST right. Except for some details. These two models we should expect rather at the begining of next year and their names should be double that of current two cameras with SR, and one should be more advanced than K10D is. But by this Fall we can be sure that Sony will show Alpha model with new improved, lower noise sensor (it could find its use in Pentax camera next year...) that should directly compete with K10D and next year - model with no_crop_at_all...
