Re: Will Sigma stop making lenses for K-mount?

Considering that about the only reason in existence to use a Pentax body is
to shoot Pentax glass, I'm not seeing an issue. If you really want to use a
non Pentax lens, there are plenty of non Pentax bodies to choose from.

I suspect with Tamron it is co designing and licensing.
The D FA 50/1.4 being an example.
They are licensing their Opera 50/1.4 design from Ricoh.

Re: OT: British House of Cards (a bit political

2019-09-09 Thread William Robb
It really just goes to show how absolutely dangerous and foolhardy it is to
elect populists to power.

They are generally incompetent, have no real leadership skills, and are
only good at the required to be a populist job of self aggrandizement.

Johnson is a poster boy for clueless buffoons everywhere, and he seems
proud to be taking his cues on the subject from trump.

trump, at least, has shown the world how completely hypocritical American
conservatives are and, unfortunately, how untrustworthy the United States
actually is. He had boldly shown that eventually, the USA turns on
everyone, including it's own citizens.

Both will go down as the worst individuals ever to be elected to office
anywhere.
Neither can be referred to as leaders, since neither has the ability or the
inclination to lead.
Both are in it purely for personal enrichment.

OT: How to kill a wasp nest

2019-07-31 Thread William Robb
After getting my smoker, I have rarely fired up my propane brazier. Last
night I decided to use it. I took the cover off, fired it up and went back
into the house too season some beef. When I went out a few minutes later to
put the burgers on there were a few wasps buzzing around the back of the
barbecue.
By the time I went out to flip them, that number had risen to a dozen or
more, and they seemed a bit angry. As the last time I got stung by a wasp I
was on an IV drip for a week, I asked my wife to bring the meat in.

Nice pap piece, but all it is doing is forwarding an agenda with a
narrative.

Put two people darting out into traffic with no way for the vehicle to
respond until someone is going to be hit. The car has to choose one or the
other to die.
Either way, especially if this happens in the USA, the company that built
the car, and the people who writhe the software that told the car which
choice to make, is going to face a pretty heavy lawsuit.

Frankly, it scares me that we are preparing to put machines into that
position. Who should live and who should die being decided by an algorithm.
The machine acting as God.

The problem with driverless cars is going to come to a head when a car has
to make a decision about who lives and who dies.
Either way, it’s a no win for the manufacturer and programmer of the
vehicle.

We have quite a few hybrids floating around here, mostly Priuses and I was
surprised the other day when I saw a Nissan Leaf.
I expect it will be parked for the winter, though if they have heated
parking at home and at work it would be a viable winter commuter here.

Happy birthday

2019-07-04 Thread William Robb
To my American friends:
In these trying and uncertain times, remember that the U in USA stands for
United, and that there is no letter k in America.
Remember it is always darkest just before dawn, and as long as you can
elect your leaders, there is always hope for the future.
Remember that the people across the aisle from you are not the enemy, they
are not "total losers" no matter how much you disagree with them. They are
your fellow citizens.
Remember also that leaders lead by unifying, autocrats rule by dividing.
Be well, and if nothing else, enjoy the fireworks.

Stupid iPad

2019-06-09 Thread William Robb
And here I thought Apple stuff was supposed to be a cut above the rest for
quality.
I have an iPad Pro that has gone really flakey about the attached (Apple)
keyboard. Sometimes it works, mostly it doesn’t. This started happening
after the last update.
I have followed the simplistic instructions apple gives for fixing (shut
down, restart, clean the contacts, etc).
Any advice regarding how to make my iPad into something as reliable as a
cheap Huawei would be appreciated.

Thanks

Re: It looks like we'll have a Peak Designs tripod.

2019-05-23 Thread William Robb
My Feisol tripods allow the legs to be folded backwards so that the
normally wasted space below the head is filled with the head.
It’s a great feature and takes several inches off the length of the folded
tripod.
The peak design looks cool, and will surely appeal to a number of people,
but for the most part it is a solution to a relatively non existent problem.
Who really needs a high tech tripod to hold their smartphone still?

OT: Food

2019-04-17 Thread William Robb
Well barbecue, to be more precise. My lovely wife bought us a Louisiana
Grill smoker style barbecue for our anniversary. I’ve been having a grand
time smoking everything from avocado to zucchini. I want to do ribs on
Friday. I just know we have some foodies out there who will have wonderful
recipes to share.
Please bring them on

I always figured it was enough to know that they all reduce reflection from
most non metallic surfaces, and that the circular ones didn’t bugger up the
function of whatever was behind beam splitters.

It’s a blood sport and like all blood sports there will be cheaters skewing
the results. The problem arises when you get people who don’t understand
that the game ends after the votes are counted winning elections. These
people may win at the polls, but they are not leaders.

I didn’t bother as the upgrade wasn’t giving me anything I especially care
about. The brouhaha about the noise reduction is, IMHO, an overreaction.
The very thorough test that Pentax Forums did showed that noise was
reduced, detail wasn’t. The test that DPR did showed the opposite, but DPR
has a long history of not being able to run a test without fucking
something up.
If you do a lot of shooting at higher ISOs the upgrade would be a good
thing.

Their strategy appears to aim to be the last man standing. I'm not sure how
good it would be for the industry to only have one or two choices.
Monopolies or near monopolies are never a good thing.

The Fujis are gorgeous. I handled an X-T2 and an X-H1 as well. My major
complaint with the viewfinders seems to a great extent to have been
resolved. They have put in an accelerated refresh rate mode that takes the
refresh up to a hundred times per second. Apparently it swills battery
life. The trade-off for a decent viewfinder seems to be short battery life.

I have a cheap Chinese adapter for putting Pentax lenses onto my X-T1, it
works well enough. I saw an adapter with an aperture ring on it for making
control-free lenses work.
Truthfully, the Fuji works better than the Pentax for pre control-free
lenses. The Fuji does away with the green button kludge and turns the X-T1
into a crop sensor Pentax LX.

The K3II is probably as good a still camera as the X-T2 for the most part.
Perhaps not as fast, but both are 24mp sensors. The X-H1 is still 24mp, but
it looks like it has much better video. It is also quite large.

The Fuji lenses are every bit as good as anything Pentax has on the market.
The real lovelies are the 14/2.8, 23/1.4, 35/1.4 and the 56/1.2
I would say that those 4 are must haves.
And yes, I have them.

My late friend and mentor, Brian Schneider used an Olympus in the later
years. He was a Pentax and Leica user when I met him in the mid 1970s. We
sort of lost touch for a few years, and then reconnected in the mid 1980s.
He went from Pentax to Nikon to Canon to Panasonic to Olympus from the mid
80s until the end. Much of my Pentax equipment came from him. I suppose in
a roundabout way, the PDML can thank him for the infliction that is me. I
would likely have not looked at the brand in 35mm had it not been for him
and the fact I already had a 6x7 (also his recommendation) and liked it and
it’s ponderous beastliness.

When Hoya bought Pentax, it was for the medical imaging division. When they
sold the photographic side to Ricoh, they kept medical imaging, and
apparently the rights to the brand name.
Ricoh picked up the photographic side for something like 125 million USD.

I remember joking at the time that the PDML collectively could probably
have raised the capital to make the purchase, probably Stenquist could have
done it himself by putting a second mortgage on his castle.

Been there, done that (thanks Igor). For reasons unbeknownst to me, it
doesn’t hold the setting, and reverts to the default setting as soon as the
program is restarted.

Maybe check and see if you didn’t inadvertently drag the folder into
another one.
You could also do a general search for the folder in Windows Explorer.
Also, is it possible you accidentally tagged it as a hidden folder? Do you
have your system set to show hidden folders?

It doesn’t appear to have worked out very well. People here and on that
somewhat neurotic forum dedicated to Pentax are having kittens because of
this “useless upgrade”.
This seems to be another case of the more you have, the less happy you are.

Ricoh doesn’t seem to be giving Pentax the unlimited resources required to
build a world class system in a hurry, and at this point, they need to be
fleshing out some sort of prime lens system more than new cameras.
We’ll get out K1 replacement, but I expect it won’t happen until they can
plunk a 50mp sensor into it and not have it cost $3k or more.

As for the K3 replacement, it’s quite possible that Ricoh has decided that
high end APS-C is now a dead end and will continue with lower end bodies,
or perhaps go mirrorless with that format while concentrating their
flagship efforts on the 35mm format.

wrote:

Hi Dan, I occasionally fly a DJI Phantom 3 drone. It’s a small quadcopter
with a fairly small Sony backlit sensor and a pretty wide angle lens. It
isn’t a fisheye, but it’s close. They do well as a flying big landscape
camera. Mine is 12Mp.
Think point and shoot with wings.
They are limited by their small size. They aren’t stable enough for a long
lens and can’t haul a bigger camera into the air. They are stupidly easy to
fly, and will generally return to home automatically if it senses the need.
Try to make your outward flight into the wind. That way the plane won’t
have to fight the wind coming home.
From a photography perspective, all of the Phantom class copters will have
about the same abilities, the limitation being the small size.

I think there isn’t much in between Phantom sized and big load carrying
machines. The big ones, such as the DJI 1000 series can carry a full sized
DSLR into the air. The price of admission is north of 10 grand. They can be
upwards of 2 meters tip to tip, and have 8 rotors. They have the advantage,
photographically, of being able to carry a bigger payload. Another
advantage ir motor redundancy. If a quadcopter loses a motor, it crashes.
If an octocopter loses one, the pilot should probably turn for home, but
even if two motors go down, the machine will probably make it home.

As more and more areas become no fly zones, it is getting harder and harder
to fly them at all, much less legally. The machines know where they are and
have regions prorammned in where they won’t fly.
It’s possible to thwart this technology, which is why they show up beside
airliners from time to time.

The problem with cloud storage is that it is only as secure as the company
doing the storage. If it goes out of business, or gets hacked, etc, your
data might just disappear.
I’ve been using Drobos for over a decade now. I’m on unit two now because
the first one was a USB-1, and was getting too slow with data writing as
files got larger.
I think the one I have now is a Drobo 5d. They seem reliable, and are
infinitely expandable by increasing drive capacity. They offer double disc
redundancy, so if two drives kaak, you don’t lose anything, though this
comes at the expense of capacity.

UPS Stupidy

2017-10-17 Thread William Robb
I ordered some stuff from Lee Valley Tools to support my other hobby.
Working on the theory that I am never home when UPS wants to deliver, and I
don’t really want a bunch of expensive tools sitting in a box on my back
landing, I changed the delivery to pick up at one of their outlets that is
close to where I work.
I was home for supper, and the UPS driver came to my back door and knocked.
As I was opening the door, he scanned the parcel, and told me that it had
been redirected to the depot and I would be able to pick it up tomorrow.
And with that, he took my parcel back to his van and drove away.

And people wonder why I despise UPS.

Have fun

For me it depends on which hand the glass is in. Right hand is clockwise,
left is anticlockwise.

There was at one time, a radio program on the CBC called Ideas. One Robbie
Burns day there was a series of interviews with cellarmasters from the
major distillers in Scotland.
Every single one of them indicated that whisky should be diluted somewhat
with water. They all had their own recommendation regarding how much,
varying from 25% to 50%, but the message from each was the same.
I don't know if it's the same for whiskey, but I do find I prefer bourbon
over ice rather than neat.

Re: K-3 question

2017-08-16 Thread William Robb
I shot a total eclipse in Estevan in around 1978, and spent some time
making sure I wasn't going to trash my camera.
The longest lens I has was a 200mm, I would have liked a 300. I think a 400
would have been too much.
I guess these days there are zooms, but they were rare and crappy at that
time.

Anyway, the wisdom back then was to keep your mirror down except during
exposure because of the possibility of cutting the curtain. Mostly it was
cloth shutters and I had an F2 which was titanium foil. I think now the
shutters are all made of some sort of plastic. I don't know if they will
take that sort of heat or not.
I had a mylar filter in a card that the local astronomy club said was safe
to view the sun with, so I held it over the front of the lens for
composing, and then took my eye away from the viewfinder and the filter
away from the lens to take pictures. Once totality was achieved, the filter
wasn't needed. I think we were right in the middle of the shadow for that
one. The totality seemed to go on forever.

Hoya bought Pentax for the medical imaging division. The last thing they
wanted was the camera part of the company. That was why the QC went to hell
on the K5. All they were interested in was squeezing as much profit out of
the photographic equipment as they could. Ricoh only paid something like
125 million for the camera division.

It's 42.

Actually, it's about 32.4 calories to carry 10 pounds up a flight of stairs

A lot of people, myself included, prefer OEM equipment on general
principals. If I didn't like Pentax glass, there isn't much reason to shoot
with Pentax bodies.
