the flash? What difference could it possibly make?

This is just a guess, but I know the AF-500FTZ has a switch position for
 rear curtain sync.

What I think is somewhere in Pentax's dedicated flash connection,
there's a pin that gets a signal (V+ or ground??) when the shutter
curtain opens and loses that signal when the rear curtain starts to
 close. Say something like this:

 Curtain Curtain
|Opens |Closes
 _____V+

OR

 -----ground

It'd be easy to build a trigger circuit to detect the state changes and
switch the flash trigger to either the leading edge change or the
 trailing edge change.

Thinking about it now, a standard hot shoe could just go to ground for
the duration of the curtain being open, so you don't even need the
dedicated pin to trigger rear curtain sync; just design your rear
curtain trigger circuit so it will flash when the ground circuit opens
 again.

For a lark, I tried the AF-500FTZ with a K-1000, and it doesn't do rear
curtain sync even with the flash switch set in rear curtain position, so
I think Pentax does use a dedicated pin.

And, I'll bet it's the 4th pin in approximately the 2 o'clock position
that permits rear curtain sync, since Pentax had TTL Auto-flash with the
LX and Super Program and AF-280T, which I'm pretty sure uses the two
 additional pins at 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock.

The AF-500FTZ manual says rear curtain sync only works with the PZ-1
[PZ-1P], which I expect was the only camera with that 4th dedicated pin
at the time the manual was written, because AF-500FTZ rear curtain sync
does also work with the *ist-D.

It's a matter of where the control is located. If it's located on the body,
it's possible to do rear-curtain sync with non-dedicated flashes. If the
controls are on the flash, there must be flash/body communication to allow
rear-curtain sync.

I picked up a used 360 recently. I knew before that it didi not have
the swivel feature, but for the little i use a flash, felt this a
better value over the more expensive 540.

In the few times(3) i have used it for fill flash, it has performed
very well. One or two test shots for + or - comp and a way i went.

Speaking of flash units, looks like the Pentax AF-200FG compact flash
unit is now available. It's a little pricey for no HSS, dedicated
wireless control or second curtain sync, but otherwise looks like a
decent compact unit. The spec sheet suggests that it's compatible
with all P-TTL as well as TTL cameras, and has auto and manual
control too. Might be that nice stuff it in the bag in case I need
 some beach fill kinda flash.

Only works fully dedicated in TTL flash mode with camera bodies so

Interesting. The cheapest and least farkly modern flash Pentax makes has
the best TTL compatibility. Just the logic we have come to expect.

Re: Af360 worth it?

2007-10-10 Thread John Celio
I used the 360 to shoot at my middle brother's wedding (I was able to borrow
my Pentax rep's 360 for the weekend, as I couldn't afford my own). It was a
superb performer, and not underpowered at all for what I was doing. Many
people have pointed out that it doesn't have a swivel head, but that feature
was not really that big a deal to the majority of users I encountered at my
old camera shop job. Vertical bounce is good enough for most people, if
they ever use it.

The reason I bought the the 540 was because I wanted to be able to use the
flash in studio settings. The 540 has way more features than I'll ever
need, though. I just wanted it for the extra power and a couple other
options.

The 360 is a very good value. I'd highly recommend it, unless you think
you'll really need the extra features.

John

Buy the 540. The extra range is a huge advantage. Plus, you can use

I won a AF-200FG off the Pentaxian site. It works quite well with the
K10D in PTTL mode but the lack of wireless really limits it use. The
manual control has only a couple of power settings so that is of
limited use too. However it is better than the on board flash.
