Apart from the lack of meaning in the sentence quoted, it includes one of those strange repetitive and redundant turns of phrase which really grates on my nerves. “Together, both partners have a combined history…” Lets deconstruct that. If they have a combined history of whatever, then it probably is not separately. So Saying “Together” is not needed. And then we find that “…both partners have…” Not just one of the partners, but both of them? Imagine that. A simple straightforward phrasing would be: “The partners have a combined history…” If they are going to write meaningless twaddle, at least they could avoid bad writing. stan On Jun 11, 2014, at 3:36 PM, Igor Roshchin s...@komkon.org wrote: Thank you, for the interesting document. Stan, yes, I saw that but decided that I shouldn't be too picky. :-) Back when I was a kid, there was a very popular program Radio-Nanny. They were discussing a bunch of different things, but occasionally they were discussing some grammar questions in a funny way. One time there was this dialogue: - ... I saw it with my own eyes! ... - Hold on .. Do you have eyes that yours but not own(ed)? - I saw it with my eyes!... - Hold on... Can you see with somebody else's eyes? - I saw it with eyes!... - Can you see with something besides your eyes (maybe ears?) - I saw it! - There we go... What did you see? Back in the college, one of my faviorite professors wrote as a part of the autograph in his book: Tautology yields emphasis! Keep learning, Igor! Indeed, frequently, the intent of tautology is the emphasis. And that is a known effect and trend. I believe it has been even discussed on the popular radio program A Way With Words http://www.waywordradio.org/ It bothers me neverthless, I am with you on that. Re: Another one bites the dust -- Ilford
Paul, Thank you for the reference to the RR papers. Actually, right around the moment I was sending the message to PDML, I was checking your previous response to my quesiton about metallic papers, and checked out RR website for the pearl papers. I saw those satin papers. I am tempted to try them, but a combination of a few factors stops me at the point: 1. The shipping for just one pack of paper is a bit too expensive, about $7. Since I am buying Epson inks, I considered buying those from RR, instead of Atlex. While the nominal shipping is cheaper than that at Atlex, the prices make up and bring the overall cost some $15 higher than what I'd be paying at Atlex for a comparable package. I was also considering buying a sample pack, and I was very disappointed by the way they do their sample packs. They actually mark the paper on the FRONT side. They say that you can cut 8.5x11 pieces to a useable 8x10 size, but I have much smaller use for 8x10, and besides, I don't want to cut where I don't have to. You might consider it a caprice. To some extent, it is. When I see that Atlex sells _fully_ usable sample packs, (and has cheaper inks) I feel that RR makes their sample packs awkward way for no good reason. So, I am considering if I should vote against that with my wallet. But I am still thinking.. Another one bites the dust
Jessops is the biggest high street camera retailer in the UK http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-20958659 They bought out a lot of the old-fashioned camera stores during the digital revolution and turned them into anonymous clones. On the other hand, they did have a wonderful classic camera outlet for a while, and it was Jessops that my insurance company got to resupply me when my Pentax stuff was stolen. However, I haven't bought much from them, and I can't say I regret their passing. This comment is telling: Neil Saunders, retail analyst at Conlumino, explained the root of Jessops' problems. The amateur market collapsed because people who once bought cameras found that they had these things on their smartphones and they used those instead, and the professionals found that they could use online niche specialists who were cheaper and often had more extensive ranges, he said. So both migrated away from Jessops. There used to be a fantastic independent photographic shop in Oxford called Morris Photographic - in fact many a PDMLer who has made the trip to Oxford was dragged in there by me at some point.. http://www.highstreetuk.com/oxford/Oxford_high_street.jpeg (blue building) but for quite some years now they closed the shop and evacuated from Oxford, retreating from extortionate rent and lack of decent trade. Sure, tourists would come in and buy the odd case and batteries, but the real money is in the high value items. Instead, they set up in a business unit about 45 mins drive away right up in the cotswolds near a village called Chipping Norton, where they still are. They revamped the website and are now a major online retailer. The joy is though, they still have an aladdin's cave showroom chock full of lowepro bags and manfrotto kit, not to mention cameras of all types. No appointment necessary, if you make the trip you just turn up like any old shop. Brilliant. So rather than try and beat the web business, they embraced it, and survived. http://www.morrisphoto.co.uk/about.html Just sayin -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Producion --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Another one bites the dust
Yeah, those are the signs of the times. I unloaded my 2 67ii bodies and lenses back when there was still pretty good value. I felt that over time, film would diminish in usage and that the labs would cease to process the film due to cost effectiveness. My own local lab in a suburb or Sacramento (Roseville), is still doing C41, but just barely. I'll have to ask if they do any E-6 anymore. If they do, I bet it is no more than once a week. The cost of film processing will continue to rise until almost nobody will use it anymore. I think it will become a home based process in the future. It does make it frustrating when shooting those beautiful medium format bodies, but that is the way it goes. I'm glad I moved out of the format and film when I did. I have been more than happy since then. -- Bruce Tuesday, May 26, 2009, 7:48:37 PM, you wrote: BM I went to drop three rolls of 220 E-6 at Cali-Color in Sacramento BM today only to be told they no longer process E-6. Another one bites the dust.
As most of you know, the life of a photofinisher has changed dramatically over the past couple of years. The business has been taken over by large chain stores who treat the industry as just another department, and now is dealing with the fallout of poorly trained big box store sales staff, and the failings of the computer industry. For the past few years, it has been like watching an old friend die. Consequently, I will be unemployed as of the 12th of May. And not at all unhappy or concerned about the future. William Robb

Tripling my wage, and make every customer pass an intelligence test before they get to talk to me would have gone a long way. Really, the lab industry has been in decline for a very long time. It used to be staffed by photographers looking to suplement their incomes, and derive the benefit of doing their own work on someone elses nickel. It's how I got into it. Now it is staffed by people who weren't fast enough to be cashiers. None of my co-workers are looking at the industry as a long term employment opportunity, with the consequence that they are not interested in learning all that they need to know to excell at it. I'm not even sure at this point if the industry is really viable in the long haul. Digital imaging has done a few things to the industry, none of them positive. It has put a lot of the quality control squarely in the lap of the customer, who doesn't want the responsibility, and it has taken a lot of the quality control potential away from the lab. Interestingly, digital printing has been, in many ways, a boon to film printing, since now we can control things that we could not control before without an enlarger and some serious work. Unfortunately, film use is in freefall, so the customer is not seeing the potential benefits, they have switched to digital capture. Anyway, it's late and I have a belly full of whisky. William Robb

On my recent journey to northern Michigan I had yet another run-in with gravity and impact. This time it was my Super Program and A-50/2. I'd carried the camera on the flight with me and jammed it into the backpack while we were landing because it needed to be under the seat or some such per the flight attendant. Unfortunately, the pack didn't get totally zipped I guess since the camera plopped out onto the parking lot as we were trying to fit six people and luggage in to my moms four person car. On initial inspection, it didn't look bad but later, when I tried to use it, the lens wouldn't focus. I noticed a dent in the filter ring and I guess it landed hard enough to chunk the lens's internals. Now, this isn't an expensive lens but it WAS part of the kit that I received that started me down this Pentaxian road... and I liked it. It's the third or fourth lens that I've wrecked in the few years I've been shooting and it pisses me off. I feel like I've let these things down with my lapses of concentration or judgement and allowed them to come to harm. Anyway, I guess my self loathing rant is over.
