Re: Buzzard Pair/Hint of Fall (Dan)
We're using common names, while Dan is referring to Taxonomic classification. Dedicated bird watchers know the scientific classification down to the sub-species, and can't understand why common names are good enough for the rest of us. Most people wouldn't know a Cathartes aura meridionalis from a hole in the ground, but if you tell them you've seen a Turkey Buzzard, they'll know what you mean right away. Dan, I'm not trying to raise your BP. There is plenty cr*p on the web. I agree that Vulture is the correct terminology, Buzzard seems to be used colloquially as a sort of common name. There is a lot of that in SA too. The "real" birders get quite hot under the collar when the "uninformed" use old or common names in earshot. I think some people get a warped sort of pleasure doing it. That's why I never got into birding groups - it immediately becomes a sort of competition. Alan C -Original Message- From: Daniel J.
