Re: Camera not reading lenses: what could be the reason?

2018-11-14 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Thank you, John, Larry, and P.J, for your responses.

Cleaning/inspecting contacts and deep-power-cycling didn't help.
Upon coming home and inspecting the camera mount carefully, I could not
see any visible problem with the contact.
Besides displaying "F--", the camera refuses to do any operation that
requires the lens. (I.e. no shutter activation, etc.) So, I suspect, it is
not just the "A" contact, but something more, probably happened to the

main board.

Argh...
Now, I am considering my options: trying to repair this camera, getting
a K-3, or even a K-1 (most likely used). This "forced" upgrade was
not planned or budgeted...

I've tried to clean the contacts, powercycled it by taking out the battery...
Nothing helped.

Any ideas on what could be the culprit and what I can try "in the field"?

Please cc me, if possible for the ease of reading responses on the road.

The only time I've had that problem it's been with a particular lens.
However, maybe you didn't leave the battery out long enough to make sure
that there was no more residual power left in the camera, and there was
only an incomplete reset.

Before doing anything drastic, I'd take the battery out and let it sit
overnight, just to make sure.  Of course that won't insure that any long
term storage capacitor is discharged, but that would probably take weeks.

However I have a feeling that the problem is in one of the contacts,
either the digital or A contact.  There aren't any moving parts in
either of those on the body, AFAIK, if so leaving the battery out
overnight doesn't work, I have no further suggestions for DYI repairs.
I know better.

This isn't the answer to your question, but I could overnight you one of
my backup bodies (or better yet sell you my K-3 with overnight postage).
Alternatively this could be a great opportunity for you to upgrade to a
K-1 if there are any available in LA.

"F--" is what my K5 displays if I turn the lens aperture ring off the "A"
position (for lenses that have aperture rings, obviously), so I'd suspect
that the "A" contact on the camera body may not be working.
