Re: Finally got my K10D. but........(update)

2007-01-10 Thread John Francis

It appears I bought this lens some time in 1999, judging from
the modification dates on the initial comparison pages. That's
some time before the Long Beach race, which was April 2001 IIRC.

The San Diego Wild Animal Park shots were just about the first time
I used this lens. The other shots are spread over the intervening
years - it's not too surprising that I can come up with a handful
of decent shots over a seven-year period! I've learned a few things
since then, too; I think the shot of the group of antelope could be
improved (I'd like more DOF, and a better, more rigid monopod; the
shot of Fat Albert has significantly less camera-shake induced blur).
Of course using a K10D would help with that, too :-) Next time I go
back to San Diego (maybe later this year?) I'll have another try.

Isn't it? Of course it wasn't taken by me - my wife (and her

I just love the balance of the angles of the lens and the neck

I'm pretty sure those other companies pay for the rights to make their
lenses compatible, which would mean they're given whatever compatibility
information they need. I could be wrong, but it makes sense.

I'm not sure for other brands but my retailer (which is Pentax
fan/collector and usually reliable) says Sigma defenitely does
reverse-engeneering.

He does also notice that whatever the mount (even for Canon etc.), he
has a way higher number of returns/warranty repairs with Sigma stuff.
He says the importer/Sigma does certify their stuff is compatible with
cameras on the market when the Sigma product is out.

If it doesn't work with a future product and your Sigma product is out
of warranty, then basicaly you're screwed and Sigma will not take care
of it.

My friendly camera repair guy told me that they glue their glass into

10-17 is excellent, though you will need a defishing program.
I've heard enough good things about the 12-24 that I bought one.
At some point, I may even get it.
The 14/2.8 is excellent, as is the FA20-35.

Potentially, since their lens protocol is a fairly blatant copy of the
EOS protocol. IIRC they originally tried to licence EF mount. got turned
down and decided to use a K-mount derived Bayonet on a mount that's
otherwise EOS. Sigma-mount lenses can be modified to work fully on EOS
bodies with a mount replacement.

That is interesting.
I thought I saw somewhere they use a K bayonet mount but is obvious that is set
up different linkage and electricly wise.

Blame Sigma and their habit of backwards-engineering cameras to make their
lenses and flashes compatible, instead of whatever the other 3rd party
companies do to get it right the first time. This kind of shit happens all
the time, which is why I long ago decided to never buy from Sigma again.

As it is, you may want to contact Sigma and see if they'll fix your lens for
free. They do that sometimes, you'll just be without your lens for a month.
