Late yesterday afternoon, a fatigued driver fell asleep on the National

tree. The driver survived with minor head injuries.

A bit of history:

A few years ago, Rio Tinto sold Palabora Mining Company (a copper mine)
to Chinese HBIS who bought it primarily for several million tons of
Magnetite (Fe3O4) accumulated as a waste by-product with the intention
of exporting to China for the steel industry. The railways had no spare
capacity so a sub-contracted fleet of about 400 of these trucks were
engaged to truck the Magnetite to Maputo. Each load is about 40 tons
wuth up to 8000 tons being moved daily.

Cotty -

Most household circuits in the us are 110/120V.  Electric cook stoves,
electric clothes dryers and a few other items with a high power
requirement use 220V.

Reading the footnotes there are some obvious limits to the lenses the

Yesterday we went on a day Lockdown excursion to Mopani Camp situated
about 100km N of the Phalaborwa Gate in the Kruger Park. We were self
sufficient (just in case) but were treated like royalty when we, the
sole visitors, arrived. Lunch on the Fish Eagle Terrace was a memorable
occasion. A few shots: The impressive entrance with Baobab tree; An
immigrant - English House Sparrow; A worker busy painting the wooden
terrace structure with creosote (there was recently a bad accident when
part of the terrace collapsed because of termite damage) & a 4-frame
Pano of Pioneer Dam. Regrettably the two bird hides at the other side of
the dam are still off-limits. Please scroll along.

Late this afternoon while I was gardening, a large flock of Green Wood

difficult birds to photograph because they are very skittish & will
explode out of the tree if disturbed. I slowly crept into the house to
get my camera & slowly crept as close as I could get (about 20m). Most
of the birds were in the middle of the tree but I managed to find a
couple exposed in the weak sunshine. I then slowly backed off & put my
camera back in the house before returning to pack away the garden
tools. Then it happened - with much commotion the whole flock shot out
of the tree in all directions. The Afrikanns name for this bird is
Papagaaiduif (Parrot Dove) for obvious reasons. This is the pick of a

crunching power while rendering thumbnails on import.

Cold possibly be a Red Shoulder Hawk. White clouds were very bright and

Hi Dan,

I need to work for a few hours tomorrow in Scotts Valley (just down the
road from Bay Photo). If anyone wants to meet up for breakfast, I'll be
grabbing a bite at Auntie Mame's in Scotts Valley about 9am. That time
of morning it's probably about a 40 minute drive from downtown San Jose,
possibly less.

It's very easy to find on the corner of Mount Hermon Road and Scotts
Valley Drive. I hope to be done by 2PM or so.

At that time of the day the drive is counter commute so it should be
pretty clear. The weather is also supposed to be clear tomorrow:

https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/ca/felton?cm_ven=localwx_10day

There are a lot of photo opportunities in this area. I heard something
on the radio about surf warnings, so that could make for some good
photos. Even if the weather as settled down, the surf is probably still
stirred up a bit.

Here are my Santa Cruz County photo albums
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157627106882506/

Some of my favorite places are:

Even if there won't be a lot of butterflies, Natural bridges can still
be nice:

https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=natural%20bridges

Seacliff beach in Aptos, with the SS Palo Alto, aka the cement ship
https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=seacliff

Moss Landing, halfway between Santa Cruz and Monterey:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=moss%20landing

Fall Creek is the state park walking distance from my house:
https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=fall%20creek

The Felton Covered Bridge in Metropolitan downtown Felton is often worth
a 15 minute stop

https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=covered%20bridge

It's a few blocks from Roaring Camp, which is right next to Henry Cowell
state park

https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=roaring%20camp

If you enjoy pipe organs, there is one in Boomeria in Bonny Doon (a few
miles from where Robert Heinlein used to live)

https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=boomeria

North of town there are a bunch of nice beaches around Davenport
https://www.flickr.com/search/?user_id=99496143%40N00_all=1=davenport

including Shark's fin cove
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/35965085151/

If you enjoy eclectic music, do check out KPIG radio (107 oink 5)
https://www.kpig.com/
It's the radio station that pretty much started the genre Americana
music, or at least coined the term for the mix that they play. Rumor has
it that there are now even folks in England who do internet music shows
in that style.

If you want to swing by my house in Felton, I could even bore you with
my metal prints, consider that as an offer or a threat as appropriate.

For food in this area we've got a pretty wide selection. In Felton we've
got the Cremer house which has yuppified comfort food and a large craft
beer and cider assortment. Across the street is Flynn's, a new place
slightly upmarket. John Craige will be doing a sold out show tomorrow,
but the restaurant should still be open.

In Santa Cruz, India Joze is a very interesting hole in the wall with
Asian inspired food.

Mission Street BBQ, not far from Natural Bridges is quite good and has
live blues music every night from 6-8, they have a sister restaurant,
Aptos Street, which is near Seacliff Beach.

Hindquarter in Santa Cruz is another one of my standbys, ribs steaks etc.

Given more guidance, I could make other suggestions. There are, of
course a lot of other things to do on that side of the hill. There's a
much wider selection of food over there. Great Ethiopian in San Jose,
Malaysian in Milpitas, Indian and Pakistani all over the place.

Daniel J. Matyola wrote on 2/17/19 10:00 AM:

Jersey.  We will be in the area until Tuesday evening.

If anyone in the San Jose area on within an hour or two is interested in
meeting up, let me know.  I will be out and about much of the day, but
will check email again this evening, or I can be reached by phone or
text (908)685-1090.

can approach to about 5m. Apparently they have become garden pests in

Very nice.

With no large-aperture wide-angle for that system, the ISO must be
stretched pretty far to make the dust lanes in the galaxy appear.

To get the same AoV of my 24 on the K-1 you'd need 36 on the 645Z. Do
remember that the ones I posted were stitched panoramas. Interesting,
I tried poking around on ebay  and the wide angle options seem to be
35 f3.5 or 45mm f/2.8

https://www.ebay.com/sch/3323/i.html?_fsrp=1&_nkw=pentax+645+wide+angle&_sacat=3323&_from=R40=nc=Pentax

KEH doesn't really show anything else
https://www.keh.com/shop/lenses/pentax-645-a--pentax-645-fa--pentax-67-.html?multi=true

I'm rather surprised by this.

From looking at Larrys shots, I believed the quality of the
foreground would be the decisive factor for whether a result would be
print worthy.

It is my experience that photos of just the sky get very boring very
quickly, even if it's an amazing image of the sunset, milky way etc.
And as far as the night sky goes, there is nothing I can do that you
can't download better versions of from the Hubble archives.  I always
try to put something interesting in front of a pretty sky.

With that in mind, I took an extra long exposure at a lower ISO and
smaller aperture to see if they could be combined effectively in post.
That turned out to be more finicky than I had hoped, even with no
fluttering vegetation to move between or during exposures. Or maybe
I'm just too tired to be efficient now (it's 3 am).

I haven't yet experimented much with lighting my subject on the ground
when putting the sky in the background.

Here's one I did in Rhyolite outside of Death Valley
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/11770425926/in/album-72157639425946344/

Anyway, I think the technique may have some merit for the right kind
of foreground.

I'd like to try it with nudes, as has been observed a nude in the
foreground can improve a photo with almost any background. There are
some major depth of field challenges there. But I suppose that someone
with focus stacking software could do two fifteen second exposures,
with the foreground subject lit with a flash and one image focused on
the foreground and the other focused on the background, and let the
focus stacking software sort out which frame to grab which heavenly
bodies from.

Sky exposed for 15 seconds at f/4.5 and ISO 12800.
Foreground exposed for 8 minutes at f/8 and ISO 800.
Tonal PP done in LR. Pasted the two together in photoshop.

You might be able to overcome the DOF issue if you have a _slim_ nude that
is also closer to stars. (Is that what is called a Starlet? ;) )

:D)

PS.
And did you say "flash" and "exposure", while talking about the foreground
subject? ;)
Not to mention that you shouldn't be grabbing a certain frame(s) even
with software. :-P)

Cheers,

Igor

With no large-aperture wide-angle for that system, the ISO must be

To get the same AoV of my 24 on the K-1 you'd need 36 on the 645Z. Do

careful notes as I was still submitting stuff to animals Animals/Earth

I may have  something I could contribute

Hi Larry,

Definitely a Red-tailed Hawk (adult). At first I thought it was the pale
prairie subspecies often referred to as a "Krider's" Red-tailed Hawk,
but the extensive belly band and the tail with orange going all the way
to the base (rather than with an extensive whitish wash at the base and
orange only on the outer half), leaves me to think this is what is often
called a pale-morph Red-tailed Hawk. Red-tails are extremely variable
and can range from very pale like this one to almost entirely
chocolate-brown.

Fantastic photos - thanks for sharing them!

We don’t get many big brawny birds here in the heartland. But today a
hawk landed in a nearby spruce while I was shooting dinky sparrows and
chickadees. Not easy to identify him sitting in a tree, and at first I
thought it was Cooper’s Hawk.

But I got one throwaway shot of him in flight, and due to the wing
markings and the broad red tail, I think he’s a red-tailed hawk.

Ann, the image was retained on my "sent" mail. I include it again below.
In the event it once again does not appear, it is an image of a Canon
camera with a cake emergeing from one side.

I don't know why I cant get rid of the blank spaces before what I wrote...
I was deleting the long list of people I sent it too and I couldn't get
Thudnerbird to take out the blank spaces...

anyway - some of my friends may be fiends but you know my typos!

Of course it would be great if all my friends bought a book or calendar,
and some of you already have and have
been thanked - but I'd love it if you looked at the "store" I have now
on createphotocalendars.  Cafepress is
phasing out wall calendars so I've transferred several classics to the
new location.  The good thing is, I have
more control over the appearance of the calendars here, though it is a
bit more work and at the new locale
I can do BOOKS!  and I DID!
The First Time I Saw Paris is now a hardcover photo book (in came out in
2010 as a small appointment calendar on
lulu.com)  in two sizes.  and I just finished making a little book of
puzzles, which is a lot less expensive than the
photo book.

So there you have it -- do have a look even if you are not planning on
buying anything.  The reports have
been good from those who have already bought calendars and books from me
on this new site - that is,
the print quality is good and the size selections for both calendars and
books are good too.  Now I'm
glad cafepress is phasing out the calendars but they still have lots of
my designs on lots of product.

Meanwhile - Have a great turkey day!

Hugs all around,

I don't know Nikon that well, but looking on KEH ...

the chrome body looks like maybe a Nikon FM - $99 to $150
Nikon N90 - $50 if he's lucky
Nikon Nikkor 80-200mm F/2.8 D - $668.00 (Bgn) to $822.00 (Ex)
Nikkor 50mm F/1.4 Non AI Manual Focus Lens - $60 to $80
Can't tell what the flash is - could be $25 to $250 depending on the model.

Cool! Those cameras have interchangeable sensors.

:-)

It doesn't show the model number of the manual focus camera, or what the
prime is. I'm assuming 50mm but value would depend on whether it's 1.8
or 1.4.

I've got a drawer full of Nikon film gear I need to convert into what

in a photogenic position, with the dome open, weather permitting. (Note:
viewings or taking pictures /through/ the telescope /will not/ be

Weather and systems permitting, the Shane Telescope is scheduled to use
the Laser Guide Star system after 10pm on September 30th, so you may get
images of the yellow laser, propagating from the Shane Telescope dome.
Note that the laser is not very bright from the vantage point of the
Visitors Center, and the Moon will also be near first quarter, reducing
visibility of the beam, but long enough exposures (at least a few
seconds) should show the beam.

This macro foray is rapidly turning into an entomology project.
The ant is a regular wood ant worker (formica sp.) who strayed into
the house and died on the living room floor.
As insects often do, it had curled all its legs up underneath. So I
had to soften it for a while in vinegar before attempting to arrange
legs and antennae in a more lively pose. Then dry it out, remove
debris and dust, and then place it on a piece of bark.

Stacked in Zerene Stacker from 300 shots by 645Z with FA-150/2.8 and
FA-75/2.8 as diopter (ca. 2X magnification). End result is cropped by
about 50%.

Glad to hear, Ann!

Continuing my foray into entomology. A dead insect this time too.
Meticulously prepped and arranged. Getting the legs and antennae right
definitely counts as fiddly bits.

Shot with 645D, FA 200/4 and reversed A 55/2.8 (almost 4X). Stacked
from a pile of shots. ~180, iirc.

Well, still seems somewhat tenuous
and I know how fleeting memories
can be. I feel it's likely I'll be working
it fairly regularly for some time
however and hoping to keep it fresh.
Thanks for pleasing contact.

2017-06-24 Thread Eric Featherstone
Jack,

It seems to me that you've only uploaded the one photo to photo.net. You
may think you've uploaded more, but there's only the one you posted earlier
visible in your gallery here.

Maybe the others are set to private or something? I'm just guessing.

Eric.

Note that the part of the message I quote above only indicates one
level of
quoting - Toralf's original post simply quoted P.J.'s post inline,

I've seen the same thing on one of Ann's posts, too.

Is this yet another example of a mail client ignoring mandated
behaviour?
I think it isn't in this case, but that things get mixed up by mistake
if you hit delete at the wrong spot, or something. I didn't really
notice it happening in that message...

M$ Outlook is more notion's when it comes to quoting behaviour, or the
lack thereof, isn't it?
OMG. That should read, "more *notorious*". Spell-checker didn't agree,
