I looked up the woodpecker on your page and apparently he is shy and you
were fortunite to get a nice shot before he departed...
Love the orangetip butterfly - and white wagtail.. finding the english
words by searching the dutch words on google - they do a better job thn FB !
The Orange tip is prettiest at the angle you photo'ed him... with the
interesting pattern on the underside of the wings - the photos of them taken

from above, only showing the  ornge and white make them seem ordinary.

Looked at the whole album, of course

I went back out there today, but I've just about concluded that I'm
going to need a 500mm f/4 to really get good shots of the waterfowl.
They're all there -- but they seem to know the limits of a 300mm zoom

A very enjoyable set. The ladybug is my favourite. Just shows that
the subject doesn't need to be big in the frame to have impact. The
old orange barn is great also.

Thank you, Brian.

The most valuable thing I've learned from using a 50mm prime almost
exclusively for about a year is that you don't have to zoom in on every
single subject to get a decent picture. It's all part of the scene. :-)

Thank you, Bob.

I happened to notice the sunlight streaming through a break in a stand
of trees behind me and onto the grass in front of me while I was hoping
to get a shot of a couple of ducks (blue-winged teals, I think) and
several snowy egrets that were on the little lake I was sitting by. I
got some truly awful shots of those, FWIW. ;)

Thanks, Jack!

The best way to distinguish the shots from the Promaster is the bokeh,
which looks mottled to my eye. I try to shoot it a couple of stops down
from wide-open and avoid zooming all the way out if I can. But it still
looks really ugly to me compared to the 50/1.7.

The shot of the robin in flight is a good example of the ugly bokeh it

The spot I stumbled on is one I've known about forever -- since I was a

never really thought of it as a good location. We always just thought of
it as a place to catch fish from the spillway off the watershed as kids.
But, I just decided to wander down there since I was already in the
vicinity. It's probably a 5-mile walk, round-trip.

I'll be going back, for sure. :-)

The surroundings haven't changed much since then. The only thing that's
really changed is that I actually notice it now, where I took it all for

Subject: GESO: Photowalk - 4/17/12

Hi all,

It's been over a week since I went out on a photowalk, so I finally got
off my dead ass and took the cameras out today. I suppose I got some
decent shots, but I missed more than I caught. I did stumble upon a
great spot for morning golden hour opportunities, though. Ten photos in all.

The shot of the robin carrying away the worm is a project I intend to
return to until I get the rendering right.

Anyway -- same as usual: K20D and K-x, A-50/1.7 and Promaster 70-300/4-5.6

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/sets/72157629842772567/

Comments, critiques and suggestions welcome as always.

Thanks!

Great shot of the ladybug.

You're getting pretty good at the birds in flight too.

I was kind of iffy on including any flower photos out of fear that

A very enjoyable set. The ladybug is my favourite. Just shows that

Nice set - I love the shots of the squirrel and the pink bicycle. I
guess that at ISO 6400 you did not have to worry much about camera shake!

fitted with the A 50/1.7 in order to have some reach, and it wasn't until
the end of my photowalk that I discovered that I'd had my ISO on the K-x set
to, get this, 6400! In broad daylight, under a mid-afternoon sun with a
cloudless sky! I don't know how it got that way unless I accidentally hit
the magical combination on the 4-way while squatting down to take a shot
with the K20D.

In any event, the shots turned out relatively well, all things considered.
Though, I was disappointed to see the blown-out highlights in the butterfly
shots. Still, all in all, I can't complain as I got at least a few decent
shots at the expense of a little shoe leather.

Anyway . . . here.

I have to say, I like that Promaster 70-300 more and more as I come to use
it more often.

The squirrel shot is tremendously fun.

The shot of the pink bike and the front porch is brilliant for evoking a
sense of place and social class, apart from being in color it's
downright theraultian. You also did a brilliant job on the color,
something about it being slightly washed out in some places reminds me
of a decades old print.

Re: GESO: Photowalk from 4/02

2012-04-03 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thanks, Larry!

I had a near-miss shot of that squirrel that would've been great if I'd
been 1/10 second quicker on the shutter button -- jumping from the fence
to a security light pole. Unfortunately, there was a satellite dish
attached to the pole, and he jumped behind it, leaving only his tail in
view.

And thanks for the kind words on the bike shot, too. It was a tiny
little home, full of life. The bike's design suggested a kind of
washed-out photo -- like an old Polaroid dug out of a shoebox in the
attic. So, that's what I went for.

Thanks again!

GESO: Photowalk and a Friend

2012-03-28 Thread Walt Gilbert

Hi all,

Well, I took the cameras out for a stroll yesterday and ended up hanging
out and having a few beers with a friend for the night. She's a fetching
young lady names Sarah and she was kind enough to allow me to photograph
her after a little loosening up.

I applied one or two of the new Picasa filters that I thought were
interesting -- Cinemascope and Infrared Film. Of course, your mileage
may vary. I thought they added something to a few photos that otherwise
would have been rather meh.

Thank you, David.

The flowers are just about perfectly situated for photographing, sitting
on top of a steep roadside embankment, about seven feet above the road.
Just a hop over a shallow ditch and about two steps up the side of the
embankment, and you're right there. The biggest challenge is not sliding
down the embankment.

Thank you, Bruce! I believe that's a Bradford pear tree, if I'm not
mistaken. They're beautiful when they blossom in spring, and grow really
fast. But, from my experience, you have to be hyper vigilant about
keeping them pruned. Otherwise, they shed limbs like crazy and split at
the slightest provocation.

Those are old Burley tobacco barns that don't get much use these days as
very few farmers grow it anymore. The old saying goes, you have to be
strong in the back and weak in the mind to grow tobacco -- and I guess
all the old guys' backs have finally given out.

The dog was too good-looking a beast not to get a few shots of him --
extremely friendly and kind of a goofball. I'd have probably spent the
rest of my daylight playing with him if he hadn't lost interest an gone
on about his business. I got a few other shots of him that I liked, but
am still working to see what I want to do with them.

2012-03-14 Thread Walt Gilbert

Thank you, Frank!

The Purina wall is one I've photographed dozens of times, but manages to
keep frustrating me. The roof line of the building is extremely close to
the top-left corner of that sign and it always ruins the image in my eye.

And the flag on the front porch was the very thing that caught my eye.
That particular home has lots of interesting photo fodder on the
property -- weeping willows, a duck pond, old horse wagons, old gas
station signs, etc -- and one of these days I'm going to see if I can
get permission just to wander around on it taking photos.
