Re: Help! More Bird Confusion
I found my copy of “Birds of Michigan” and checked to the Pine Siskin photo. Maybe. But my bird ha a longer beak and bigger eyes with goggles like a Thrush. The wing markings are correct, but my bird has much longer legs. Still not sure about this one. I’m leaning more toward the female Redwing Blackbird as suggested by Mathew Hunt. The long legs, head markings and feather color are in synch with that bird. http://www.aspensongwildbirdfood.com/bird-profiles/red-winged-blackbird Paul > On Apr 25, 2017, at 7:59 PM, Ken Waller <kwal...@peoplepc.com> wrote: > > Paul, the closest bird to yours, in my 'Birds of Michigan Book', is a Pine > Siskin > > Kenneth Waller > http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/kennethwaller > > - Original Message - From: "Paul Stenquist" <pnstenqu...@mac.com> > Subject: Help! Thanks Ken. I have that book but I've been working, soI didn't really look but will now. That's two votes for Pine Siskin. A landslide! Or female Pine Siskin? (Not a finch.) (All I have mentioned are on the Audubon list of recent sightings in the Midland MI area.) Female Rosebreasted Grosbeak. Maybe. Beak doesn't seem quite gross enough... Also maybe Thrasher? But too many stripes on the back... I think it may be a female Red-winged Blackbird. The thrushes you named are not North American. Re: Help! More Bird Confusion
That beak makes me think it might be a finch, and a quick search online reveals something called a Purple Finch, which looks similar. But plenty of other people know far more about these things than I do. This may be Thrush week in Michigan, which makes sense, since it’s time for migration and we’re just off the fly route for birds that crossed the lower great lakes.
