There’s an RFC for TCP via Avian carrier

Why not TCPIP via Ouija board?

When I was trying to restore old photos a while back there were several
where it looked like one color faded much more severely than the others
which would throw off the whole color balance. The only solution as to
manually boost the color that was out of wack. But I was working with
prints, not negatives.

Have fun!

It's hard to judge the colors - skin tones, the wooden chair back, the

Up at the top of the stairs you can see door frames, and they appear to be
painted white. They might serve as a "neutral color" to allow you to correct the
rest of the colors.

Re: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-10-03 Thread John
In the background there's something "black" sitting on the counter. It's
probably a toaster & was actually chrome. I think y'all could get to color
rendition closer if you chose something in the black area (not the reflected
flash) and set that as the neutral tone.

The negative is Kodak SAFETY FILM with the number 12518 printed along the edge.
I've been searching to see if I can identify the film from that. No luck so far.

SWAG: IF it was 1968, the film might be Kodacolor X in 127 or 126 format. That
was Kodak's color negative film from 1963-1975

But I still think the major color correction (for fading & shift) should be
available during the scan.

Hmm. I get excellent scans out of both my Epson scanners with Vuescan. The
Epson software has a couple of other things it does well and I use it for

In the end, whatever works best for you is all that matters... :)

2021-10-01 Thread jcoyle
I tend to agree with Paul - I've used VueScan for donkey's years, on a number
of scanners, and still am not entirely comfortable with the interface. I
prefer to deal, for example, with dust spots post the scan, but VueScan has a
tool to do them during the scan: this often leads to a softer image than I
would want. The Epson software is good (Perfection V500 with all updates).

Thanks Gonz!

That suggests to me that my 2nd and 3rd renderings are reasonably close to

Scanned an old negative.  Played around with the usual knobs, but
cant seem to get it to look decent.  There is not
enough dynamic range here it seems.  I've seen articles somewhere
where they make old photos like this pop out almost to

new.  How does this work?

Re: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-10-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
My take on Gonz’s scan. I set the black point and white point in levels.
Tweaked the color balance to get the best skin tones, Increased saturation a
bit to correct for some of the fading. Did a bit of burning and dodging, and
that’s about it. Setting the levels was the most critical step in improving
this pic.

RE: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-10-01 Thread jcoyle
Hi Gonz - from your low-res Flickr image, I used the following process in PS:
Auto Tone
Auto Colour
Auto Contrast
Image Adjustments:
Brightness reduced
Contrast +10%
Shadows/Highlights:
Mid-Tones +15%

And then resized it to 300dpi
The result is at
www.epraxisdata.com/Img002_adjusted.jpg

not brilliant, but perhaps it would work better on a decent scan.

Scanned an old negative. Played around with the usual knobs, but cant seem to
get it to look decent. There is not
enough dynamic range here it seems. I've seen articles somewhere where they
make old photos like this pop out almost to
new. How does this work?

2021-09-30 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
How you scanned it isn't particularly significant, although a holder will
generally make the negative easier to handle and flatter if it's a good holder
for the format.

I played with the image a little further … Color balance and skin tones are
always so fussy! Bumping up the color temperature to +31 and the tint to +22
gives more pleasing skin tones albeit at the expense of some increased magenta
and violet overtones in the shadows. Not unpleasantly much, though: I'd go with
this for the better skin tones, and then use the radial filter tool to
desaturate and neutralize the corners and edges … thus:

Doing this kind of image processing is fun. :)

Re: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-09-30 Thread ann sanfedele
Well I did a "print screen' of Godder's latest and took it a bit
further  based solely on what I remember of popular interior decoration
back in the day
around the time I would guess this photo was taken.. "eggshell" or
"off-white" would likely have been the wall color as opposed to gray...
I just alternated adding red and green in little bits at a time in
Photoshop elements to go for the wall color think it might have been.

Re: How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-09-30 Thread Paul Stenquist
I’d begin by setting the black point and white point with PhotoShop’s Levels
tool. Then I’d dodge and burn as necessary to provide further correction. Once
I was satisfied with the range, I’d tweak the color using the Color Balance
tool.

How do I correct an old image like this?

2021-09-30 Thread Gonz
Scanned an old negative. Played around with the usual knobs, but cant
seem to get it to look decent. There is not enough dynamic range here
it seems. I've seen articles somewhere where they make old photos
like this pop out almost to new. How does this work?
