Re: LED on camera light

2013-10-28 Thread Bruce Walker
Ken, there's no comparison between the smaller LED light units and a
hotshoe flash; the flash is many stops brighter.

I compared my 160-LED unit with an AF540 flash using a lightmeter and got this:

LED
full brightness at 2 feet: F4.0 (125th sec, ISO 200)

AF540FGZ (zoomed all the way)
1/1 at 2 feet: F90
1/64 at 2 feet: F11

F90 is not a typo. Focused flash is very bright.

 HI Ken -

I bought a Bolt VM-110 LED Ringllight for macro work earlier this year. I
have to say that I found it to be of marginal use for outdoor macros. It
says it is GN 15' @ ISO 100. I figured that would be bright enough but it
falls short even for fill light in bright sun. By contrast, the relatively
low powered AF360FGZ is GN 98.5 @ ISO 100. Not sure of the GN on those
 models you are considering.

I bought the Bolt to use with the Q. One of its limitations is that when
using a lens without a leaf shutter, the body can only synch the electronic
shutter with a flash at 1/3rd of a second. I got the Bolt light in hopes of
circumventing this limitation when using the K mount adapter, but it is of
 limited use.

MPO - I use an LED light source off camera mounted next to a Pentax 540. Seems
the birds at my feeders prefer a constant light (faster AF too!) with an
occasional flash than a flash out of the dimness. Best sky colors are at dawn

I finally decided on Neewer CN-160, from Amazon:
 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004VC8M3K/

It can take a rechargeable Li-ion battery (IIRC, even more than one
type), or 6 AA, which can be a backup option (never had to use it yet.)

 I bought an eForcity NP-F550-compatible (NP-FM500H) battery
 (2500 mAh or 18.5 Wh):
 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000E7XM68/ or
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MW91J6 (I used this listing of the
 product)

The charger is also by eForcity:
 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0045TKC7S/
It is small and can be plugged into a wall outlet or a car 12-V socket.

The battery lasts for rather long time, and the panel has a 4- of 5- red
LED indicators that show the level of the battery charge.

This light panel (made in China) is considerably cheaper than some other
 panels sold at BH.
As Paul said, the foot that goes into the hot-shoe is not perfect, but
 it is OK.
I like the fact that it is dimable: sometimes I dim it when it produces
too much light: especially when either the object is too reflective
or when it is not a posed shot, and straight into the face).

One feature is that it is a rather focused light, i.e. the cone is not
very wide. It is comparable to the angle of view of somewhere between
35mm and 50mm lens mounted on K-5. I don't know about other LED light
 panels.

I used it for both video and still photography, both for my baby/toddler
and for some event shooting (physics festival, social dance
performance). Unfortunately, I don't have any of those online to show.

 I hope this helps.

Mine is quite narrow field of coverage, but I wanted more intensity in a

Paul, do you see a need for dimming. I'm thinking about the Genaray
 5300 because it is dimmable.

 Hi Ken,

I have a Genaray LED light. Mine is similar to the 7100T but has
variable beam width rather than variable color. I use it mainly for
video. I shot the in-car video of that Shadow hot rod for the Times
with it. Works well for that. I have also used it for fill light when
shooting at dusk. I like everything except the hot shoe mount which
is kind of flimsy I both the Sony L-Series battery for it. Gives it
plenty of power for a long time.

 Best,
 Paul

I'm thinking about using it in outdoor macro situations.
