The bottom line is that more films *are* going the way of the dodo and
we can expect that to continue. My friends at the George Eastman House
get their information straight from Kodak and when I was there for the
platinum print workshop last fall they were lamenting about the film
discontinuations to come. What's happening is that Kodak now loses
money on still photography film: The only thing keeping them in the
film business is the motion picture industry. (This is exactly the
reverse of the situation years ago, when the consumer film side of
their business supported the motion picture film side.)

When the movie industry goes to electronic distribution - and they're
working hard on it - is when the axe will really come down hard on
film.

A couple of years ago we went to a movie @ the local Rave theater.
They used DLP projectors.
The display was so jerky that it gave the wife a headache and I found
it downright unappealing.
But 2 weeks ago we went there to see The Adjustment Bureau and
their new digital projectors are not so objectionable. Smooth frame
transitions and thus no headaches or other ill effects. Pleasant.
The new gen of projectors is quite nice and that leave film
only for shooting editing, after which all else is digital.
I expect that within 5 years all theaters will have some new
digital projector.

You could well be buying the real thing. Kodak, which in the past was
loath to sell their films in off brands, is now apparently packaging
some of their films for other brands. I think ARISTA Premium 400 was
re-branded TRI-X a couple of years ago. The exposure and development
times seemed to be identical. That might be true today, and at 1/2 the
cost of Tri-X, (Freestyle Photo), a bargain.

E-6 Slide film can be processed at home, but if slide film is
discontinued, I doubt very much that chemicals to process it will be
available commercially either. I might take a shot at making my own BW

happy trying to make the chemicals before I processed it.

Sadly I kind of thought slide film would last longer. You really can't
duplicate some of the uses for slides for high projected images at any
kind of reasonable price in digital. Sure you can get a digital
projector and display pretty good quality images, but a well exposed and
processed 35mm slide in a fairly cheap projector will still blow away
any but the most expensive digital projection system for image quality.
If you only need to project slides occasionally it's a no brainer. I
guess that option will soon be no more.

funny you should mention that. I've been having a bit of a clear out and
found my carousel at the weekend. I'd forgotten I even had it, it's so long
since I used it.

I also have hundreds of envelopes of print film with negatives in that I've

try to scan some of the decent stuff while I'm at it.

If you only need to project slides occasionally it's a no brainer. I
guess that option will soon be no more.

When I was shooting more commercial stuff, it was all slide/
transparency, but this was because it was what they wanted for production.
The slide show kinda morphed over to powerpoint at the same time bosses
figured out that they could hand the office bitch a cheap PS camera.
It's too bad, because not much can beat a projected slide for sheer
grandeur.

The race to the bottom takes it's toll in many ways.

Some places do so-called 'shoebox scanning' for people. That must be a

One time a guy brought several thousand slides (literally boxes of

And some idiot accepted the order.
I was the only person who could get the slide scanner to behave, and so
any time I had a free moment, I scanned slides.

It went on for weeks.
It was probably one of the times I wasn't much fun to interact with.

Like that time the universe was expanding.
