I learned from a taxfree shop in an airport (I think it was Heathrow) that
Lagavulin distillery had had a fire, and lost some of it´s production. It
caused some frustration and higher prices.

Putting "other" before grain would have made all the difference. 8 -)

BTW, "malt whisky" is a tautology, as all grains need to be malted (i.e.
germinated) before fermenting, or there is no free sugar to ferment. This
applies whether the final output is a beer or spirit. I suppose it
differentiates between the usual and some form of artificially produced spirit
but I don't know of any examples of the latter.

Yes, but.

Blended Scotch can be mixed with any grain whiskey

Single malt scotch can only be distilled from malted barley from a single
distillery; Blended scotch can use any whiskey from any grain, malted or
not. Blended malt whisky, like Green Label, is blended from whiskies from
several distilleries, but only whisky form malted barley, not from generic"
grain.

I was trying to shortcut that explanation, and obviously failed. :(

show up here sometime for whiskymas, or talk me into giving a tour of

When I discovered Lagavulin it was only $42/bottle, these days I've seen
it for a pretty decent price at Costco. A bit of poking around seems to
show that it's going for about $55/bottle.

If there is a trader joe's near you, check out their Finlaggin, it is an
Islay malt, they don't say which distillery it comes from, but many
people think that it is Lagavulin. It's definitely yummy.

When both Laphroig and Lagavulin are priced too high, I go for Green Label
(a blend but with single malts only, no grain spirits) or Bush Black or
Irish Honey.

On the subject of pedantry, green label is a pure malt, also known as a
vatted whisky. Single malts are made from a single malting of barley,
vatted, or pure malts are made by mixing multiple single malts. A
blended whisky can be made of a mixture of any fermented and distilled
grains.

I learned a tremendous amount from Michael Jackson's world guide to whiskey
https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/whiskey-the-definitive-world-guide_michael-james-jackson/310228/?mkwid=s79WclwC7%7cdc=70112914152Cj0KCQjwibDXBRCyARIsAFHp4fp4nqIUCfBL75KAGFVVfIee5qns9ZtDvdGIpSHSFe0zAX58_DDd_QsaAutmEALw_wcB#isbn=1561382078=12231623

His complete guide to single malt scotch is also on of of the definitive
reference books on the subject. The mantle has been picked up and new
editions have been released since he passed on.

I picked up the boot Still Life with Bottle by Ralph Steadman for the
pictures, but it turned out to be quite a good book on scotch.

https://www.amazon.com/Still-Life-Bottle-According-Steadman/dp/0151003106

This discussion reminds me that I need to pick up another bottle of
Tullamore Dew. Actually, I should pick up a couple of bottles because
I've found that chopping up vanilla beans and letting them soak in Tully
makes a wonderful drink, or a pretty nice vanilla extract if you happen
to need one.

One must be flexible.

If I'm at the bar and its the other guy's turn to buy, I choose Lagavulin.

No, Costco liquor prices are the same as the fancy wine and liquor store in my
town. But Costco does import scotch that’s bottled as their house brand,
Kirkland. It’s good and somewhat of a bargain. But it’s a blend. Some of the
bottles sold online by Flaviar and others can be purchased here. But I’ve often
clicked on a bottle only to get a “not available in Michigan” message. Chicago
scotch prices are usually about 20 percent less than the Michigan ticket.

Welcome Dale,

I don’t know if you’ve spent time on other online photo discussion fora, the
good news is that PDML seems to be one of the most technically clueful groups
of photographers in an on line forum. The bad news is, that the other ones are
even worse.

If you ask for either technical or artistic advice, you will get some
excellent, well informed answers. You’ll also get a lot of pure, impure and
tainted bollocks for advice. And puns, you’ll get those also.

You’ve undoubtedly seen comments about the annual, do pick up a copy. The first
one came out shortly after I joined the list and my copy was an excellent
lesson in the art of humility.

Mark, there are generally two cases. One is to increase the contrast between
the stone and the (usually green) background - orange or red to give a light
colored stone a darker background, cyan or green to give a dark colored stone a
lighter background. The other is to minimize the appearance of mold, algae or
lichen on the stone. I've already picked the small graveyard where I will first
practice. Most of the stones there have patches of an orange lichen on them, so
I will try shooting in B through #16 and #21 filters.

What I have in hand is either old Kodacolor prints or snaps with my old 3.3
megapixel Cybershot - nothing to write home about. My gravestone photography
has been in New England where I grew up (I have lived in Virginia for the last
30+ years). I don't get back to New England but once every five years or so,
but there are stones in the oldest local cemeteries here in southwest VA that
will present significant challenges. Since I joined the Association for
Gravestone Studies I have learned a lot about quality gravestone photography. I
expect to make the first practice expedition later this month, and will share
some results on my web site with links here.

Paul, I feel the same, I had a darkroom for about 10 years in high school and

I do still use Kodak Photo-Flo 200, but not in a darkroom. Cleaning of

2) using nothing stronger than a non-ionic cleaner such as Photo-Flo.

Welcome to the group, Dale.

My father was a history nut. His passion was visiting old and threatened
cemeteries and documenting the material on the gravestones. The records
were to the County Historical society, for genealogical and other

Welcome to the group.

My wife is deep into genealogy and we've been going on genealogical
vacations over the past few years - traipsing through small towns and
cemeteries in New England and the midwest. They are fun trips. I shoot
film and digital and usually use B film in cemeteries - Tri-X pushed
to 1600 is a favorite. I don't document info but focus on the graphics
in the stones themselves. Digital infrared and color (especially in the
fall) also come into play.

I'd be very interested in hearing how you use colored filters on the K70
for digital B

making progress. I am using a variety of colored B filters for gravestones,

have done a fair amount of image post-production over the years I would rather get
the correct image in-camera than fix it in post.

Hi Dale,
Welcome to the PDML. I’m a 70-year-old codger who worked with filters and a
darkroom for more than 30 years. They’d have to hog tie me and beat me to go
back to that now. Rendering BW during RAW conversion allows control of every
color. Lot’s of fun too. Speaking of fun, we have a heck of a good time here.
Once in a while we even talk about photography!

Welcome, ditto what Alan said :-)  Your'e just a kidif you are in your
50's :-)

I always shot with colored filters when I was still attached at the hip
to my LX and KX bodies when shooting BW.  Now I've gotten used to
shooting raw+jpg and switching to BW in Photoshop elements ...
converting to BW in post is pretty satisfying...

WHen I first switched to digital I -did- shoot bw in camera (I have a
K-5 now but started with ist D.) butfound it much easier to not switch
in camera
between color and BW after finding I had taken shots in BW that I meant
to shoot in color - so shooting in color and not switching settings in the

field was safer..

Look forward to seeing some of your work

Perhaps now is the time to point to the PDML FAQ. Yes, there is one -
and MARK! is explained, together with lots of other possibly useless
information some of which is now outdated :-)

The "Cotty's Hat" entry seems to need an update. I'm not sure what
happened at the critical moment, there - apparently I wasn't paying
attention at the time.
