Well, I have an older version, somewhat closer to The Original, if The
Original is assumed to exist.

Now, I did listen to the guy talking. I mostly concentrated on his

It would befit the subject that the previous paragraph is then spoken in

not just British, but English. As everyone knows, God is an Englishman.

His accent is quite interesting. It is what's called RP, which you probably
know means 'Received Pronunciation'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Received_Pronunciation. In other words, it is
the 'standard' educated English accent which chaps like one tend to converge
on, although one's is not as educated as his. He has what sounds like a
slight undercurrent of the West Country, which is the part of England to the
south and west of Oxford, and I'd guess that's where he is from originally -
his R is mildly retroflex and he pronounces the vowel in 'type' rather like
the vowel in 'boy', but his education and resulting social position seem to
have heightened the upper class aspects of his accent and diction. Of
course, he is speaking for the video audience, so it's probable that he is
using a higher register than he does at home with his family, or when
telling off-colour jokes about his lady friends to his football mates in the
pub.

You should not try to imitate his accent as it could cause you some
embarrassment among native English speakers - naturally this does not
include our American cousins. I would recommend instead that you model your
speech patterns on the following:

Note, too, his pronunciation of words like about, aloud, and pleasure;
I'd agree that sounds like a west country burr lurking under the surface.

I wouldn't characterise this accent as particularly upper-class, though,
especially considering the age of the speaker. Educated, certainly, but not
a noticeable public school twang (let alone Eton, Oxford and the Guards).

While my pronunciation has lapsed considerably in the 30+ years I've been
in the colonies, I can, if I put my mind to it, produce an accent that makes
it apparent just what a jumped-up little oik this video presenter really is.
Even the BBC lets Just about anybody read the news nowadays, and they don't
even have to wear evening dress for the broadcast! Bring back Richard Baker,
Robert Dougall and Jack de Manio (or Douglas Smith, at a pinch ...).

Bob, I don't think you remember how thick my Russian accent was back in
2005. I can hardly imitate any accent in any language, let alone
specific English accent. To tell you the truth, I cannot even fully
imitate Moscovian accent in my native Russian language any more, even
though I lived there for like half of my life. And yes, there is a
certain pronunciational accent specific to town of Moscow.

But I do like to listen and try to spot the subtleties and differences.
I should read in proper detail that Wikipedia article you quoted. I have
already noticed that this article is translated to Hebrew but not to
Russian, which adds a bit of difficulty, but that's ok.

The video however was most entertaining. I couldn't help but notice a
rather choppy flow of speech of presenter(s)?! which would go well with
the way Russian is spoken as I was told more than once that it sounds
choppy to the uneducated listener...

I am not going to use the wording from the video, though...

True of ALL of us, since the original Hebrew and Greek words (Sheol
and Hades) that are often translated hell are also translated
grave or pit (often by the same translations in other verses)
simply meant the common grave of all mankind (state of death).
However, that benign understanding of the word wasn't loaded with as
much potential for profit for the Church as was the concept that Dante
(a comedic playwrite) popularized. That idea really caught fire.

Lo! There is a video on the page where you get to 'meet the author'!

Now I'm not sure whether you get to meet God or just King James. I don't
want to look because I remember what happens quite a lot in the Bible to
people who gaze upon the face of the Lord, and I don't want anything like
that happening to me.

However, if you want to risk a saline end, here's the link. Let us know if
you survive.

Along with 30,000-odd other books, Project Gutenberg:
http://www.gutenberg.org

has a complete King James Bible in plain text, or HTML or
several e-book formats. All free and legal; they only do
books that are out of copyright.

Ah, they may have the words, but they don't have the leather.

Re: OT: Friends in high places

2011-03-26 Thread John Sessoms

From: Joseph McAllister

Looked, listened, thumbed through the pages. Survived. Though my
thumb tastes much saltier now.

This is the bible as I read as a child, though I later decided until
I get a note from God, in his own handwriting, confirming his
existence, I would leave religion to the religious flocks.

I skimmed through the newer readable modern english bible when they
came out, and found them very unsettling. Sorta like having listening
to the Who performing gregorian chants.

I find quoting chapter and verse most effective when playing stump the
fanatic. Sounds like this one should provide good ammunition.

What I found most interesting though is prices for the used copies start
at twice the price for new ones.
