I've been there & I'm planning to visit again AFTER the eclipse.

THEN - Hwy 60W to see the Very Large Array.

The biggest thing I have to do is NOT to pack in too many activities so
that none of them get the attention they deserve.

This shot has no particular artistic merit.
It is with great relief after a couple of weeks toil & sweat that the
car is safely back on the road.

Not an expensive repair job but very time consuming.
The culprit was a seized cam belt tension pulley bearing which led to a
melted cam belt.

Ann, the minimalist shot probably is not a B conversion. I played with it in

way to improve the shot and kept “reverting to original.” And I think that is where

GESO: back on the road again

2018-06-23 Thread Stan Halpin
We are on a short cruise to Bermuda & New England Coast. These are six images
from Bermuda, pretty much out-of-the-camera unprocessed jpegs, some cropping
though.

I was muttering recently about no Pentax 1.4x extender for the K-1, Paul told
me (in not quite these words) to suck it up and use the available 1.4x D-FA. So
I have, paired with the 70-200/2.8. Note the corner vignetting on a couple of
the shots. Not bad, could be cropped away, maybe fixed in LR back home...

Re: OT - Back on the Road Again

2012-11-18 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Absolutely, Boris!

Went for a light spin today (first time on bike since collision - two months).
Felt good in the legs and on the shoulder.

My big concern is that should I have another collision or fall that shoulder
will be fragile. Taking it easy and being careful is a must.

Thanks to everyone else for the thoughts and wishes!

cheers,
frank

That's good news, Frank. However, I must urge you to exercise double,
no, triple caution when you're riding... At least until you got the
results of the second x-ray test in January that hopefully would
indicate full recovery.

My ROM is pretty much the same as the right shoulder. Pain is all but
gone and what pain I feel is almost certainly soft tissue and not the
 break.

Mild concern that the x-rays are not showing much bone between the
clavicle and the chip that broke off, but the doc said that
sometimes x-rays just don't show that new bone well. And since the
two ligaments in the area appear to be strong and supporting things
well, and since my pain is all but gone, riding should be okay.

Light rides this weekend and if no pain, cleared for work on Monday.

Return for one last set of x-rays in January as a precaution.

That is a lot of talk for: we're back on the bike again! Woo-hoo!

OT: On the Road Again

2004-07-13 Thread jtainter
In lovely old Montreal encore. This time without camera, in a combination internet
cafe and employment bureau, trying to type on a keyboard that is actually in French
but has English characters.

Glad to see Fairygirl back on the list. She still owes me Cottys autograph (cannot
locate the apostophe mark for the previous word on this keyboard).

I am seeing more film cameras on this trip, including SLRs. Saw a Japanese tourist
taking a tripod shot at night of a lovely building with what looked like a blad.

But I have traveled 3 of the past 4 weeks, and want to stay home for a while.

And, oh yeh, for those who recall my post of a couple of weeks ago, American Airlines
started this trip by delaying me by two and one half hours.

Back to photography in future posts, I promise.

Anyway, any ideas, suggestions, places to see, places to photograph, eat,

Totally unfamiliar with Fort Worth, so all my comments apply to San Antonio.
Camera shops: Not the best city in the world for those. We have a friendly
one, not exceptionally well-stocked -- Boyd's, at the corner of Blanco Road
and Lockhill-Selma. We have a well-stocked one with a reputation for
unfriendliness -- Camera Exchange on San Pedro Ave. By the way, in case you
do want to visit those shops, be aware neither one is open on Sundays.
Places to see: World-class zoo (with miniature railroad that is or was the
world's longest); four 18th-century missions (in addition to the Alamo --
the Shrine of Texas Liberty. The other four are less touristy and in fact all
the chapels are still in regular use as chapels); some nice and some truly
horrific architecture. I may have even more ideas when I'm a bit more awake
:-) I just happen to have spent a lot of time shooting the zoo and the
missions.
Of course there's also the Riverwalk.
Places to eat: Recommendations would depend on what you like to eat.
Ken Archer will probably have additional suggestions.

RE: On the road again.

2002-08-14 Thread Cesar Matamoros II

ERNR,

Thanks for the information. I will mention some of the items to her. I
know she has gone out and shot some at the missions. Maybe we will revisit
them.

As for food, she is supposed to be a food afficionado, so I will see what
she is up to - whether we dine in or out.

I would mention a get together, but with the limited time and the schedule
I believe she has put together...

The unfriendly camera shop sounds interesting. Maybe I can pop in there
and have some fun

Hoping it won't be my only time in SA,

Cesar
Panama City, Florida

Also, any good camera shops around?

Totally unfamiliar with Fort Worth, so all my comments apply to San Antonio.
Camera shops: Not the best city in the world for those. We have a friendly
one, not exceptionally well-stocked -- Boyd's, at the corner of Blanco Road
and Lockhill-Selma. We have a well-stocked one with a reputation for
unfriendliness -- Camera Exchange on San Pedro Ave. By the way, in case you
do want to visit those shops, be aware neither one is open on Sundays.

On the Road Again

2001-08-23 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Everyone,
(Well, everyone in the USA or Eastern CANADA - others feel
free to read but it won't be so appropriate :) )

To celebrate my approaching 65th (yikes!) birthday I'm
giving myself a great present. I'm renting a car as of
October 4th and driving
across the country to GCXX (The 20th anniversary of the
Grand Canyon Scrabble Tournament) and back -
taking about 2 months to do it - well, a bit less than that,
actually. I plan to be back here (being NYC) on
November 29th. This has given my friends Dave and Lisa
Noland an opportunity to get a taste of
city life staying in my apartment while I'm gone.

I'm hoping to do this without every straying in a motel or
hotel (except at the Canyon) and have a number
of friends and a relative or two that I am going to stay
with in a number of places. I'm hoping that some of
you would take me in for a night in between those spots. I
plan to do some camping, weather permitting.
I'm traveling with a pop-up tent and my own bedding and
linens, host and hostess gifts for all and I'll be
happy to cook you a meal in exchange for a place to sleep.
Scrabble? wel maybe :)
(PDML'ers - this letter is pretty much the same one I sent
to my Scrabble mailing list - between
all of you and the CGP folk I'm hoping for a FEW replies to
my housing request :) )

I will be basically heading from NY upstate to the New Paltz
area where I have
friends, then on to Toronto. I am not into marathon driving
- like to do at
most 300 miles a day. HOping for someone that is about half
way between New Paltz and Toronto to visit on October 5th.
I have a place to stay
in Cleveland, and plan to be in Chicago on Oct 12th where I
also have
digs. Anyone between Cleveland and Chicago like to put me
up on Oct 10th or 11th?
I'll be straying with and seeing my oldest friend and an
aunt of mine in the northern burbs -
should be able to arrange a get-together with PDML'ers
somehow.
If anyone lives within say, a 30 or 40 mile radius of
Clinton, Iowa, I would be most
grateful for a place to stay. I'm doing some research on
family history and my mom was
born there.

My next official stop is St Louis on October 17th... I'll be
there for 2 or 3 days.
Then west through MO, Kansas, Colorado to Moab Utah. Down
through Monument Valley, Page,
and to the Canyon.

As long as I get to see ARches and Canyonlands again I'll be
happy.

After the Tourney I'll head down to Tucson then east to
Houston, where i have
family, and on to Ft Walton Beach, FL and up through Atlanta
and points north until I am home.

I'd like to start gathering a list of willing hosts,
addresses, phones and
instructions (I will have a cell phone though.)

My precise route after I leave St. Louis is not critical,
though I prefer not to travel on the main highways, I may
have to do it to
make tracks on occasion.

Don't think of me as a guest, treat me like family, I don't
want to impose.
Only thing is, I'm dreadfully allergic to smoke so if you do
smoke I'll take
a recommendation for a camp ground nearby :)

Looking forward to seeing some of you along the way and many
more at the
Canyon. If you are willing to put up with me for a night,
I'll be happy
to call you on my dime to chat about the logistics either
now or when it
gets closer to travel time. I feel like I'll be playing
follow the dots!

Write me OFF LIST, of course.

PDML'ers I've met in person so far - just Rob Studdert and
Amita, both of whom
have been to my home.

I shall, of course, expect to hear from any of youse who
claimed they wanted to hang out with me when we were on
that thread g

Before I get unmercifully razzed for my freudian typos
which, of course,
spellchecker does not pick up, let me say here and now that
while I may have strayed
in the past, please read the words staying, stayed, stay for
anyplace my previous
post on this topic sez strayed, straying, stray.

I mean - sometimes I talk like that on purpose, but not this
time! geesh.
