other site?

That's a nice looking pelican, but I don't see the "History" connection.

I'm having a bit of trouble. I found some more lost film (Tri-X) that
contained two excellent historical (hysterical???) images, only to
realize my first SLR was an old Praktica. I wouldn't get my first Pentax
for another 15 years.

Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I could wish for more of the reflection of the boat, somehow, but there
is not much to be said against the representation of mood you've got
going on there.

The unsecured gas cylinder, now, I hope you were taking that at closer
to the 200mm end than the 50mm end.

PESO -- Fishing with egret.

2008-07-03 Thread P. J. Alling
I was going through some old files and found this one. It's part of a
series I did to more or less test my shoulder stock modification for
electronic shutter release cameras, but I got a few decent shots of this
egret standing on a stump fishing, (I posted a few others back then as
well). This one didn't seem quite as interesting or dramatic, but the
more I've looked at it the more I like it. I can't remember which
lens I used, either the A*300 f4.0 with AF 1.7x combo or the Vivitar
600mm f8.0, Solid cat. Probably the former as I don't detect any donut
shaped bokah, but you don't always get that even with catadioptric
lenses. Well any it was an excuse for another awful pun on egret...

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

PESO -- Fishing with egret. [Reloaded]

2008-07-03 Thread P. J. Alling
Jack's criticism got under my skin, I don't know if I can do better, but
I can do different.

Slightly different color balance, (more green, more natural wood tones
in the stumps).
More apparent detail in the Egret. Slightly less noise reduction, (not
that there was much to begin with).

http://www.mindspring.com/~distilfink/PESO%20--%20egretfishingiia.html

Note: I used Raw Therapee for this attempt, rather than Raw Shooter
Essentials which is my usual raw converter. Mainly because it's better
at extracting borderline details from the brightest portion of an
image. RSE however has a much better work flow not that anyone cares
about a discontinued product.
I then created two intermediate tiff files one exposed for the bird one
for the background and blended them together, sort of a HDR image from
one exposure.

The crops are slightly different and I corrected the tilt as the water
was going to run out of the pond, but anyone interested in comparing the
two images can do so, the link below is the old one. Yes in many ways
this one is much better, but I really liked the color of the original,
cartoonish though it may have been.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Re: PESO -- Fishing with egret. [Reloaded]

2008-07-03 Thread Jack Davis
Sorry for the sub epidermal result of my comments, Peter.
After all your very adept re-do effort, I believe I prefer the original
version. 'ya mad? ;(
The additional and rather subtle, contour shadows in the egret's body seem to
have come at the expense of some sharpness round the neck, head and beak. While
the tree trunk may not be that close to the original shading, the color pattern
adds to the image.
Warning: I can be taken too seriously very easily. BG

Dave,
You are trying to give Ralf some competition. ;-)
I enjoy this picture, colors of the open water, composition, details, but...
The main building/structure in the back is visually confusing to me.
I suppose that's the architect's fault, but I have trouble wrapping my
head around it.
Is that a big arched facade hiding behind a big gray sail or a ship
headed our way.

I agree with Bob here. I'm not really sure what the building is. Also, it
took me way too long to notice the fishermen on the bank to the right. If
that's your title, you might try to actually include them in the photo :)
OTOH, I do really like the look of the photo. The colors and light are very
nice to look at. You seem to be good at getting a colorscape that looks
very nice. I've been meaning to ask you how you do that.

 Dave,
You are trying to give Ralf some competition. ;-)
I enjoy this picture, colors of the open water, composition, details,
 but...
The main building/structure in the back is visually confusing to me.
I suppose that's the architect's fault, but I have trouble wrapping my
 head around it.
Is that a big arched facade hiding behind a big gray sail or a ship
 headed our way.

I find shooting just after sunset ( up to an hour after that) with
thin to no clouds (easy in summer) gives me some of my more pleasing

Funny, I never noticed the fishermen at all: I assumed the title
referred to the way the cranes resemble giant fishing rods sticking out
 over the water.

 First thing i saw.:-)

I saw the guy on the bank, after a while, but my mind had already
connected the title to the look of the cranes, so it didn't even occur
to me that the guy might be a fisherman rather than a wanderer.

Oh, and if I haven't said it already, I definitely like the shot. You
don't even have to apply the suggestions on the PDML Mouse Pad. :-)

Nice shot, good composition, and it shows how crazily dedicated fishermen
(and fisherwomen) can be.

Hi!

This was taken just outside the Golden Gate Bridge outside of the bay
in San Francisco. I'm curious as to what fish are hanging around
 this rugged bit of coast.

 Pentax *istD, A 70-210/4, handheld

For some reason I immediately thought of how illogical is to fish in
this kind of weather...

Well...

Anyway, this is very emotional photo, at least for me.
