Re: PESO - Bird - cropping advice

2007-04-09 Thread Bruce Dayton
Thanks for the cropping advice Christian. As to softness, I won't
disagree. I'm sure it comes from two major areas - one I can control
and one I can't. Shooting technique is still in it's infancy for me
and I'm sure that I can improve quite a bit. The other is equipment.
I am shooting a lowly Tokina 400/5.6 that I only paid a few hundred
dollars for. For the price, it is quite good - but it is no match for
some really serious glass like the new 500 you just picked up
(jealous!) or a 600/4 or some such. Alas, I can't envision a time in
the near future when any more glass than I already have would come
into my hands. Too many other directions and obligations right now.

Thanks for commenting and for helping to identify the birds.

Won't go into that, pot kettle :-)

Here's the URL:
http://www.daytonphoto.com/PAW/bkd_4666.htm

Well, the blurred branches/tree are quite disturbing I think,
so I would try to get most of that out.

Perhaps the upper-left-corner where the blurry branch
meets the tree, and upper-right a bit to the right of the bird ...

That would leave almost 50% of the total area in the image
while leaving out most of the blurry parts ...

Regards, JvW

Bruce,
I like the overall image especially the colors, but agree it could be
cropped some. Initially I thought just a small amount for the
distracting out of focus elements on the left and right.
And as someone else hinted a vertical orientation, I thought I'd try
my take. Tried to remove some of the distracting branch which could
be done sucsessfully if one were to spend more time. That is unless
you are opposed to some degree of cheating. I think as artists we
should be allowed that liberty to remove distracting element through
digital manipulation. After all isn't it basically the same as cropping?
