Yeah I meant vertical, not horizontal.  I don't think any major water freezes 
over near Newport, but the ship could be from elsewhere

Could it be for ice breaking? There's a chunk of metal running
vertically in the bow.

Thanks.  There are quite a few bridges along that section of the coast,
and I'm finding it a challenge to come up with ways to photograph them
that aren't the obvious cliche that everyone probably does.  The
challenge is exacerbated because the nature of bridges tend to limit
your choices of where to photograph them from.

I have no idea. That harbor is at the mouth of a river, so it might be for 
going upstream rather than to sea.  There are also some serious winds in that
