Thank god for the cardinals!  This year we have seen no bluebirds and very
few goldfinches, mostly early on, so cardinals and blue jays are just about
our only avian color.

We loved the Stellar's Jays when we lived in Washington, their color is much
more vibrant than the the eastern blue jays'.  My wife fed them (and the local
flock of ravens) peanuts from the railing of our little balcony out back.

Now that we find ourselves back in the East (Pennsylvania) we do have at least
one pair of cardinals about and some red-winged blackbirds to ensure there's
some color in our day.

I agree. Cardinals aren’t particularly common, at least not here in Michigan. 
If you don’t try to attract them, they will be few and far between. Our 
bluejays are much more common.

Being a contrarian, I have a slight  preference for the second.. but 
both shots are lovely.


shooting birds (with a camera) from a chair is better than shooting fish 
in a barrel.  Glad they are coming to you while your

horizon's are limited.
