The accretion over time thing is at work. Many of these cameras I've acquired
and used over decades of time. A few more than most, but such are the vagaries
of whimsy.

Many/most film cameras are available for dirt cheap prices now. But that
doesn't mean that any person who has gotten interested in using a film camera
shouldn't have the option to buy a fine new film camera from a Leica, a Pentax,
and/or some other quality brand name. As long as the manufacturer can make a
profit commensurate with their investment to go into production, there's no
downside to it. I'd like a new Leica M6 or M-A: I certainly don't need one, but
it's nice to have the option available.

I have to say I'm good with the K1000 I inherited from my dad but if Pentax
thinks there's a market developing then I wish them luck. Places to get the
existing film cameras maintained have to be getting fewer, not to mention parts
so if the interest in shooting film continues eventually new cameras may be
needed.

This project got pretty far along the development curve:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/reflexcamera/reflex-bringing-back-the-analogue-slr-camera

It might be nice to see Pentax (or someone) pick up that ball and run with it,
if they're going to do a new film SLR, although it doesn't address Pentax-
specific needs like focus drive. It depends heavily on who the potential
market is for such a camera. Some would *love* to be able to swap out the lens
mount and use tons of legacy glass from every manufacturer under the sun. Of
course that wouldn't drive sales of any new glass. At least someone should
steal that interchangeable film back design. :-)

In any case, if they go for it I hope they do their market research and make
money at it. It's interesting now that we're here and film is becoming a
niche thing that it's following the exact curve we talked about in my photo
class in college. Much of fine-art printmaking developed out of available
commercial printing processes when they were supplanted by newer processes

(from engraving and stone-based lithography to metal-plate litho, silkscreen,
etc. - we had old second-hand litho stones in our printmaking studio with
designs of bank certificates on them in Spanish, had cheap from closing print
shops in South America). Digital photography was in its infancy then but we
saw that it was gaining capability and would eventually be good enough for
commercial work and leave film behind. For a while it appeared film might die
entirely, but instead folks are keeping it alive, to some degree, for other
purposes.

Hi Bob!

I always do my own processing with B film. For years I've used a very simple,
standard process with most B films … I use Kodak HC-110 concentrate diluted
1:49 for working, and process in an Agfa Rondix 35 tank (daylight loading,
continuous agitation) for 8 minutes at "room temperature" … in my place, that's
usually between 72°F and 75°F. This works well for the vast majority of
standard 35 films (Plus-X, Pan-X, Tri-X, TMax 100/400, Ilford HP4, HP5, Delta
100, etc) with minor changes to EI based on experience with prior rolls.

Ferrania FP30 processed this way proved unusably contrasty, but in flat scenes
where the contrast was naturally tamed by the subject and ambient lighting it
returned beautiful tonalities and gradations, better than most other films I've
played with. So… I decided to tailor my process given what I was seeing with a
set of test exposures and grayscale chart.

I experimented with exposing P30 using ISO 50 base (and down to ISO 30) ,
development with HC-110 at 1:99 dilution, same tank, same temperatures, and
double the development time (16 min). I got lucky: That did it perfectly! With
that bit of jiggery-pokery, P30 produces a superb tonal scale, very very fine
grain, and lovely mid-tone expression.

I posted a few things on this at https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjAePJM … Can't wait to
get out shooting again with the M4-2!

:)

Happy New Year!

I’ll be interested to hear about your experience with the film.

I bought 5 rolls of P30 back in August but didn’t shoot them until a few weeks
ago. I’ve just received the scans back from the lab this morning, the same
place I bought the film, who have been promoting it over here. The results I’ve
had are excessively contrasty, so you have to be very careful to choose a
subject that matches the film. I’ll post some later so you can see what I mean.

From what I’ve read online you also have to experiment to find the best
combination of chemicals, times and agitation to get the results you want. I’m
not about to start processing my own film, so I’d have to find a lab that can
do it to my taste. I don’t know what this lab did in terms of chemistry, times
etc. But given that, I think it’s unlikely that I’d shoot P30 again.

Since I started shooting film again I’ve been using Ilford, trying different
films at different labs to see what I like best. My conclusions are that I like
the Delta t-grain films, and the best processing and scanning is from Harman
Labs (who own Ilford). They are also the best in terms of turnaround and
reliability of delivery etc. That’s the UK lab; they also have a lab in the US
but I haven’t used it. Both use Refrema dip & dunk processors with, of course,
Ilford chemistry which is well matched to the film.

Depending on cost I would be interested. As indicated in the 3 part poll I
often use both film and digital at the same time. Film largely for black and
white. The compatibility with some of the newer lenses with my old film
bodies has prevented me in investing in some of the newer lenses. A film
body that could use the sdm lenses would open up the use of those lenses. It
also would give me a replacement option if something went wrong with my
current film bodies that I use. MZ5-n MZ-s z1-p.

Remember this:

There are things, still, that you can do with film that you can’t do with
digital. B darkroom stuff like split printing & still greater color depth on
chromes (w/ pro scanning).

There are things you can do with digital that you can’t do with film. Varying
regions of contrast stands out to me.

There are things that both can do equally well. Shoot with a Petzval lens. A
very unique image form that cannot be precisely duplicated in digital
processing.

My 2 cents.

Re: Pentax is considering releasing a new film camera

2022-12-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Or, like Leica's reissue of the classic M6 film camera, it is addressing the
new audience of young and old photographers who have expressed that they want
to shoot film and want to buy a quality film camera new, not just a used (and
now in most cases ancient) one.

I applaud Leica for doing this, and I applaud Pentax for the same reason should
they do it. Why not? If they have an audience willing to buy … and you, the
Pentax faithful who have scads of good Pentax film equipment already, are not
in that audience … and can make a profit doing it, why not?

I, for one, have never stopped shooting with a film camera although most of my
photography is done with digital capture since the early '00s. Film images look
different from digital images, and it's up to a photographer to decide what
look to work with and what process from capture to finished photograph suits
their needs best.

My 1978 Leica M4-2 is loaded and ready to go with a fresh roll of Ferrania P30
in it. :)

Re: Pentax is considering releasing a new film camera

2022-12-20 Thread Rick Womer
I still have a Super Program in my cabinet. I thought I had a PZ-1p
too, but I must have given it away, or lent it to someone and
forgotten about it.

I have no desire to go back to film, though.

Don't know whether there will be much interest for this, but I still have
some 10 Pentax reflex bodies in my cupboard.
