Re: Question for FA* 300mm f4.5 owners ( Canon 70-200 f4 users)
One of the guys at the red bull race had a 70-200 f2.8 with him (nice lens BTW) I had a look at the collar. It is indeed too large. Oh well. Thanks for looking guy's. You see the locking screw is parallel to the tripod mount. You unscrew it a tiny amount and it allows the lens to rotate 360 deg, with detents every 90 deg. That's the same on that's on the EF 300 F4L IS. I just happen to have an extra one (Canon Tripod Mount Ring B(W)), but it seems to be too big for David's application. On 03/11/07, David Savage, discombobulated, unleashed: So my question: Has anyone here ever tried to use these two pieces of kit together? Can any of our Canon owners confirm that it actually works as described. I have the EF70-200 2.8 L IS and it has a tripod collar but it's different from the one you mention: http://www.entique.com.au/canon_70-200_2.8L_usm_lens_big.jpg I took it off and measured the internal dia. and that's 77mm. This one: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-Tripod-Mount-Ring-A-II- Review.aspx looks different on the inside to mine. this one is smooth, like it fits in a channel? Mine has a channel on the inside of the collar and there are raised positioning guides on the lens. The f/4 mount looks like it would fit on the Pentax, but whether or not you could use it in a quick rotation scenario from (say) horizontal to vertical remains to be seen. Go find someone with a f/4 lens and be polite :-) -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche ||=|http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Question for FA* 300mm f4.5 owners ( Canon 70-200 f4 users)
G'day All, As we all know one of the minor bad points of this lens, compared to the F* version, is it's lack of tripod mounting collar . I'm a bit of a tinkerer, and I've roughly sketched up a collar design with a thought to making one when I have some time. However, I was recently doing some wandering around eBay when I noticed several cheap tripod mount collars for use with various Canon lenses: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Tripod-Mount-Ring-for-Canon-70-200mm-300-400mm-Lens-L7G_W0QQitemZ130167704305QQihZ003QQcategoryZ29982QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://preview.tinyurl.com/2bueks These units seem to lack the ability to rotate the lens from portrait to landscape within the ring. Not really what I wanted. This got me Googling though, I found some info on the genuine Canon Tripod Mount Ring A II, for use with the EF 70-200 IS f4L , which has this function: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-Tripod-Mount-Ring-A-II-Review.aspx http://preview.tinyurl.com/2gbbyx Now from what I've managed to find, the inside diameter of this ring is ~66mm. As luck would have it, the outside diameter of the FA* 300mm f4.5 barrel is 66mm (Although the lens name plate does project out a couple of millimetres) So my question: Has anyone here ever tried to use these two pieces of kit together? Can any of our Canon owners confirm that it actually works as described. Cheers TIA, Dave -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Dave. Somewere in this mess, i have a Nikon ring that was for the 80-200 F2.8. I'll try and find it and see what the dimensions are. I don't use it anyway and maybe it may be of some use to you. No answers for you from me, just the same question. However, if you find a solution, 1. Please let us know! 2. Consider usability not only with the lens, but also with the lens + one or two tele-extenders. stan On Nov 3, 2007, at 5:39 AM, David Savage wrote: G'day All, As we all know one of the minor bad points of this lens, compared to the F* version, is it's lack of tripod mounting collar . Cheers TIA, Dave I have the Canon 400/5.6 prime with similar foot and it is a very tight fit around the FA*300/4.5 and can only go on slipped over the end of the lens which they are not designed to do. They have a latching clasp clamp ring that is supposed to fit around the lens, clasp shut and then secured with a locking knob. Maybe the tripod rings for the 70-200/4's are a bit bigger than this one on my 400/5.6, if so they probably work. I might venture down to my local Canon dealer to see for myself. That is if they'll let me remove one to see if it fits the Pentax.
