Other large-scale pests in our yard are deers. A block down the road, people
are actively feeding them, so there is a flock that is almost fearless. And
they come to chew the roses.

I've finally found a spray ("deers and rabits") that deters the dears.
I am not sure if something like that can also be effective against foxes..

Cattle used to graze in Epping Forest ( a few minutes' walk from me) and at
one point we used to have to shift three quarters of a ton of mobile pot
roast out of our garden fairly regularly. I'd love them back now to take
photos of them. We have deer as well, but our lot are very timid and it's
unusual to get anything close up. We used to have loads of rabbits, but the
fox population has dealt with that!

Send your deer over, we have an excess of roses.

Malcolm,

My first thought when I saw the message subject was it was not literal.

As far as I heard, in Chinese folklore, a fox is a magic creature that
visits to test a person. If the person does well, the fox rewards one.
Otherwise the tested person can be punished even with a death.

Thanks. I'd not heard that folklore story before.

Thanks Ann, I suspect a local cat. They watch each other but rarely fight.
Pigeons often sit in one of the two large apple trees I have, and I've come
down in the morning once or twice this year and found remains. Oh, and
gardening gloves. I've found six over this year, chewed to bits. Foxes often
get inside garden sheds, gloves seem to be their chew toys, and for some
reason they leave them in my garden!

Very kind. The fox population around here are fine until they know they are
being looked at. One knocked me off my mountain bike this year running out
of bushes into me side on! A small project this year was getting pictures of
Foxes and Magpies, and of course, this year (so far) there have been a great
deal fewer around.

Also like the greenery.

Thank you Jack. The weed is around the trunk of an apple tree, which I kept,
as it gave the fox somewhere to hide behind.
