2020-04-29 Thread Rick Womer
Your “target branch” is very nice—the lighting and detail work well.

I agree that the bokeh in the background needs to be blurrier so as not to be
distracting. Maybe not f/2.8; maybe f/4.

I’m also not fond of that big black branch (BBB) cutting across the top of the
frame. If you can use a fill flash without reducing the dramatic backlighting
of the main leaves, that would be good. You might have enough depth in the RAW
file to bring up the BBB with Lightroom or Photoshop. It would be a very nice
shot if you could.

Nice composition, Ann. Is that Carl Fisher as in music? We used to have
one on Wabash, I think--and now it might be near Depaul off State st. Can't
remember exactly--I'll have to do the google :-). Cheers, Christine

the old is the Carl Fisher building at Astor Place in New York... The
new is a luxury apartment building that
took away a parking lot across from Cooper Union - I'm not wild about most
modern architecture and would never
want to live in one of those hermetically sealed environments with
quitethis much glass, but there are cool reflections
in this one at many angles and I'm warming up to it. - I just wish it were
not where it is.

Re: Peso - Old and new

2009-09-06 Thread Igor Roshchin

I like the composition, including the tree branches.
However, I am not seeing that much of the old-new contrast in it.
The brick building does not look that old in this photo.

Manhattan has a few places where this contrast is more striking.
It's even stronger in Boston, near Newbury Street, Boston Commons,
Public Garden, Copley Place and around.

So, as far as I can tell the photo was taken from that small area
just south of Copper Union - between 7th St and Copper Square,
just East of the side of the 4th Ave.
Right?

It's an interesting area with a mixture of different buildings and
stores. There is(?) (was) an interesting Tibetan Restaurant on St Marks Pl,
or E. 9th. There is also a nice wine store across the
street from this new building that you photographed - Astor Wines
with a very interesting selection of wines from around the world and
very reasonable prices.

Some brick building do not look very old, some - do..
To me, - even in reality, Carl Fischer looks like it may have been
built anywhere between 30s and 50s.

The new glass building was built after I left NY, so 4-5 years is
about right.

I just found that Astor Wines has moved to a new place, a few blocks
south:
399 Lafayette (at East 4th St.)
New York, NY 10003

We used to live on Washinton Pl., just a block away from Washington Sq.
(I used to say that my address was NY, NY, NY)
Too bad I didn't know you then - as I may have seen you on the street.
We liked a small neighborhood-type sushi restaurant right where you live:
Ginger on 1st ave, - just south of 7th street.
We haven't been there since 2003, but I just read on Yelp that it
still exists and seems to be doing well. The owner is very nice and
friendly. We were among his first clients and he might still remember us.

It reminds me that we haven't been to NYC for long time.

Cheers,

Igor

Um, you don't really need to confirm it to me - I saw the damn thing
going up almost every day :-)
It is one of the first things I photo'ed with my first digital PS.
which I got in the summer of 2004.. I liked the
reflections of the older buildings in it.

I just found that Astor Wines has moved to a new place, a few blocks

I dont' drink at all, but Trader Joe's has taken over for those who do
who want a bargain... Astor stopped being
a bargain years and years ago... back in the 60's we could get good
cheap wine there.

We used to live on Washinton Pl., just a block away from Washington Sq.
(I used to say that my address was NY, NY, NY)

OMG - Igor - in 1967- August 68 , Sanfedele and I lived for a few
months at 78 Washington Place... a rooming house.
One room with a shared bath and you might well have seen me playing
Scrabble in the park.

Too bad I didn't know you then - as I may have seen you on the street.
We liked a small neighborhood-type sushi restaurant right where you live:

I never went to Ginger -- too rich for my blood and I'm not wild about
sushi... Ginger took the place
of a fine old Ukranian meat market - a nice mom and pop establishment
that had to close when the
landlord upped the rent by $5,000. Even if I ate sushi, I wouldn't ever
go there... broke my heart to
see the family go. I'm happy the Polish deli has survived, and that my
news-stand guys are ones that

have been there for at least 10 years.

We haven't been there since 2003, but I just read on Yelp that it
