That depends upon your organization and workflow, and what you mean. 

For my organization and workflow with Lightroom (now Lightroom Classic), the 
answer is yes: I could manage all my older photographs with Photos and RAW 
Power easily and not lose any of my finished image processing/rendering work. 
Note the specification of "finished" in that statement… 

This is because, from the very beginning when I started using Lightroom, I 
realized that a parametric editing system was an interpretive, live process … 
the *instructions* on what to do to an original image file is what the LR 
Catalog contains, the original image file is unchanged, so  when LR displays an 
image, it is reading the original image and interpreting it in a display 
preview according to the rendering parameters that you've set. If you open the 
original file with any other application or viewer, those instructions are not 
there and only the original file will be displayed. 

So my workflow rule is that when I reach a point where I consider a rendered 
photograph finished, I export it to a *new* file in a *separate* directory tree 
structure. This "bakes" editing parameters into the pixel values and writes any 
IPTC annotation in the individual files' metadata. Those exported files can be 
opened with any image viewer allowing you to see the results of your work. 

I maintain, then, two LR catalogs: 

- In Progress :: this catalog is what I import original image files with, do my 
rendering work, IPTC annotation, et cetera. 

- Completed Work :: this catalog contains ONLY finished work, no original image 
files, from a separate directory tree of finished work rather than original 
imports. 

To switch to using Photos and RAW Power as my tools, I would create two Photos 
libraries, paralleling the two LR catalogs. One library, the default one, would 
be used the same way "In Progress" is used currently in LR Classic, along with 
RAW Power to do rendering work. 

The other library would contain ONLY the directory tree of finished, rendered 
image files just as the "Completed Work" LR catalog does, and I would use only 
the image management and organizational tools in Photo since this library is 
not intended for image rendering at all; it's a tool for organizing, finding, 
and using the finished photographs outside of the editing/rendering domain. 

In doing such a changeover of tools, I would lose only un-finished editing work 
in the In Progress LR catalog, which I'm perfectly happy to do since if 
something is unfinished it means I haven't done any significant work on it 
anyway. Of course, I would take steps to ensure that all of the IPTC annotation 
data for any unfinished work was saved to disk either in xmp sidecar files or

I’m gonna go with the Lightroom Classic option, at least for the time being. 
But curious, could you manage your older images Photos with Raw power? Would 
you loose your processing?

That said, this almost convinces me to go with Photos, which I have been using 
exclusively in processing my iPhone photos. And I will continue to do so going 
forward, at least for my iPhone photos, and possibly even with photos created 
with a camera. (I still have two, both Fuji, And I’m tempted by the X-E4, for 
which I have one excellent lens.) 

But I still have tons of photos—well, not tons compared to you guys 浪—that have 
been processed and organized with Lightroom. I would want local storage, which 
means the Classic bundle, though it’s very unlikely that I’d use anything but 
Lightroom. But I believe it is $20  month.

Oh yes: 

On my mobile devices (iPhone and iPad), I use Snapseed, Affinity Photo, and 
Photos supplemented by RAW Power for image management and rendering. 

- Snapseed is great because it's very easy to learn and use.

- Affinity Photo is a Photoshop replacement. It has versions to run on macOS, 
iOS, and iPadOS, and it handles things that Snapseed cannot. I use it primarily 
to handle edge cases that Snapseed cannot (like Leica M10 Monochrom and 
Hasselblad raw files). 

- Photos is pervasive throughout Apple's OS ecology, provides excellent image 
management capabilities, and RAW Power is a companion app that gives much 
greater access to user control of Apple's image management underlying 
frameworks. It's also available on all Apple OS platforms. 

I'm most impressed with RAW Power used in conjunction with Photos … I could 
actually make that my only image management system for macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, 
and dispense with the Adobe, Affinity, and Snapseed software entirely. There's 
no real issue with doing that, just a bit of work to re-organize my 
photographic storage and learn fully the use of Photos and RAW Power, but the 
cost of the Adobe and other software is low enough that I've been too lazy to 
be bothered doing that thus far. :) …  It is, however, a good alternative app

the current offering is Lightroom Classic for the same workflow and image 
storage (local storage centric) features. Lightroom and Lightroom Mobile use a 
cloud-based storage mechanism as primary. I don't use Adobe's cloud at all, so 
I've never used them. 

Before Lightroom, I used Photoshop for all my rendering work. Since LR came 
out, I've used it less and less to the point where I have not even installed it 
on my system for at least eight or nine years. 

Photoshop Elements is a simplified, reduced feature version of Photoshop. I've 
never used it; I tried it once and found the 'simplified' user interface very 
off-putting. It is a standalone app and, for me, irrelevant.

The photographer's bundle of Lightoom and Photoshop for $10 per month (with NO 
cloud storage addendum) includes access to both LR and LR Classic, Photoshop, 
Bridge, Premiere Rush, Character Animator, UXP Developer Tools, and a beta Aero 
apps. I pay for this subscription but only install Lightroom Classic. Given how 
much I use it, $10/month is a reasonable deal for that. I guess I could install 
Photoshop if I felt I really needed it, but that hasn't happened. 

I've been on this subscription since the beginning of 2019 and it has worked 
well and consistently, overall, and it keeps up to date with new features and 
developments at no additional charge.

I use Lightroom almost exclusively on my iPhone and iPad. I also have it, and 
a copy of LR Classic, on my Mac mini, but rarely use it on that. However, I 
don’t do much post-processing. 

You could subscribe and try them all for no extra cost, then cancel the 
subscription if you don’t like it.

very powerful software and opens up some very nice features, but you 
will be on a rent to never own scenario to get it.

I do bare minimum PS Elements work. Being just a bit old-fashioned, I depend on 
the optical design first.

Perhaps I should invest in decent PS/LR.

For the FA 43/1.8 ( I wish it were 1.0) do the lightroom lens profile 
corrections work well enough for you?
I find I’ll grab mine rather than my FA50/1.4 unless I need that extra bit of 
speed.

Yeah, I've produced some beautiful results with an Argus C-3 and expired film.  
The camera doesn't affect the artistic quality of the photos that you can take, 
but the camera does affect what photos you can take.   Some of my best work is 
taken upwards of ISO 10,000, or hand holding down to 1/10 second.

ask yourselves or your friend "What Pentax gear is on your shopping (or
wish) list"?

I'd like to have a backup K-1 body. More than that I'd like more ability 
to actually get out and use my cameras. I've been kind of stuck inside 
(housebound) here for a while.

plus a modern sensor.  The K-3 was released almost 7 years ago, I mostly use 
mine these days when I either want a wide angle of view, with a fast lens, or 
when I need the best sensor performance available to me in challenging light.  
I would not be surprised if when you compared the final images, the K-3 III 
sensor outperformed the K-1.

Since a K-1 III isn't available, or even announced, there are a lot of things 
the K-3 III does better than my K-1, but I have barely had a chance to take any 
photos at all the past year, and I haven't really had any chance to photograph 
in conditions where I'm up against the performance limits of either of my 
Pentax camera bodies.  I have very little reason not to hold off on buying a 
K-3 III until either the price drops, or they sell a major upgrade to the K-1.

barely qualifies as an idle fantasy.

I'm still being tempted by the new DFA21mm Ltd. What's holding me back is
that I hardly ever use lenses that wide so my A20/2.8 fits my needs.

I would like to see DFA* versions of something in the 35mm range and 120 mm
range. A *35/1.4 and a *120/2 would both have me hitting the buy it now
button at my pusher's store. I find 135 to be longer than I like and
anything shorter, such as a 105 would be too close to the 85/1.4 to be
viable in Pentaxes somewhat small lineup. All that would happen is one lens
would pirate sales from the other.

I'm expecting to see an upgraded K1 announced later this year. I'm
expecting it will be somewhat of an upsized K3III with either a 45mp or
60mp sensor, and that is definitely on my wish list.

For now I'm buying a bigger camera bag.

I shoot 100 percent of my studio work, and about 99 percent of location 
work, with Pentax. It's mostly the K1, with occasional K3 sightings, the 
bulk of the shots with either the FA50 1/4 or the old 77 Ltd. Other 
lenses like the FA35/2 and the FA20-35/4 ride along for use when 
circumstances demand, and I'm satisfied with the results.


That said, and given the question, I wouldn't mind finding the new issue 
43 1/9, as I sold off my old one when times were tight and I miss it.


I also miss the FA80-200/2.8, but I don't know if I'd go out of my way 
to get one. It might be best to leave that one in the fond memories drawer.

Similarly, it's been quite a few years since I worked with Pentax cameras. I do 
still have one Pentax lens … the L39 mount version of the superb 43mm Limited 
(SMC-Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 Special) which was and is my all-time favorite Pentax 
lens. I use it on my Leica cameras where it never fails to produce superb 
results.

And, in general, I have all the equipment I can possibly use … and more … so 
buying more camera equipment is something I only do very very occasionally 
these days, with a lot of thought beforehand.

My preferred lens is the 55-300 PLM, that is very useful for butterflies
and dragonflies.
For this I had to buy the K-70.
The reasons are:
- my K-1 is losing too much resolution with this lens.
- I will never buy a K3-III while I use live view in many situations.
- KP not being available.
APSC is a suitable format for me.
In case there is no follow up with a new K3-III (having tilted screen!) in
time and there was a failure of my gear, I would switch to Fuji such as the
XT5.

The 24-70/2.8 is my most used “normal” lens. It’s a reliable workhorse and 
quite sharp even wide open. I too would like the K3-3, but at my age I can’t 
spend like I once did, so my K-3 and K-1 will suffice.

There is not really anything I want: I'm not very active photographically 
anyway, and my kit encompasses the range 16-500mm, fit
both my film and digital cameras (at least those with a bayonet mount) and for 
older cameras I have enough lens for my occasional
use, ranging from 18-135mm.  Were this not the case, I'd probably have to 
refamiliarise myself with what is current, but I am not
sure that the photography I actually do would significantly benefit from newer 
gear - I use a K5ii and an MZ-S mainly, with
occasional forays into film with an SV, a Spotmatic, or a  Rolleicord.
Which is why I have seldom got  into gear discussions...

Subject: What Pentax gear is on your shopping (or wish) list?

It was recently observed that there is almost no discussion of Pentax gear, or 
even gear for your Pentax, on this list lately.

Let's get this kick started:  What gear is on your shopping list, or at least 
your wish list? Why do you want it?  Why haven't you
bought it yet?

The two major pieces of kit on my "want" list, are the DFA 24-70/2.8, and the 
K-3 III.

Over the past couple of weeks, I've kind of wanted a weather sealed, "fast", 
daily driver lens.  I already have a Tamron 28-70/2.8
and the DFA 28-105/3.5-5.6 which is WR.  So I do have weather sealed in that 
range, and I do have a f/2.8 lens in that range.  I
also have the 16-50/2.8 which works just fine on my K-3.  So, I already have 
the lenses that pretty much surround that specific bit
of functionality.

As to the K-3 III, what I really want would be a K-1 III, a K-1 with all of the 
nifty features they've added to the K-3 III (though
I don't really need the fancy pentaprism for the larger field of view, because 
it's already bigger), plus a modern sensor.  The K-3
was released almost 7 years ago, I mostly use mine these days when I either 
want a wide angle of view, with a fast lens, or when I
need the best sensor performance available to me in challenging light.  I would 
not be surprised if when you compared the final
images, the K-3 III sensor outperformed the K-1.  

Since a K-1 III isn't available, or even announced, there are a lot of things 
the K-3 III does better than my K-1, but I have barely
had a chance to take any photos at all the past year, and I haven't really had 
any chance to photograph in conditions where I'm up
against the performance limits of either of my Pentax camera bodies.  I have 
very little reason not to hold off on buying a K-3 III
until either the price drops, or they sell a major upgrade to the K-1.  

The 85/1.4 is also kind of on my wish list, but the pricing is such that it 
barely qualifies as an idle fantasy.

Mark, thanks for testing. I got it also working in Chrome so I'll use 
this method now.
It is the method by uploading from onedrive on the phone that has 
stopped working.

Reminded me I was testing Instagram. It does work from a browser. I
installed Vivaldi only for Instagram.
It really blows my mind how Instagram works and why it's so popular.

Flume is a MAC program whereas I'm on Windows 10. I will search for 
other PC programs.

For now the browser method works again.

I don't recall the previous conversation, sorry. 

When I want to upload something from my desktop system (Mac mini) to Instagram, 
I output a square or 4:3 format landscape JPEG for that purpose and shunt it to 
my iPhone via AirDrop. Then I open the Instagram app and add all the image 
files I want to upload as a batch. 

It's quick and easier than dealing with the IG stuff on the desktop for me. :)

Instagram is centered around using your phone, so if you want to post 
pics to it, getting the pics to your phone is your best bet.


I sync selected photos from my desktop to my phone with Lightroom, add 
to my phone photo folder, and there they are.

I don’t think it was ever meant for serious photographers, but most of the 
worlds best photographers seem to use it. Not all of them are serious though. 
I’m looking at you, Elliott Erwitt. :0)

I don’t have a PC at the moment, maybe never again, so I can’t test what you’re 
asking for. I use just my iPhone and my iPad. I might dig out my Linux laptop 
sometime in the next year or two, but not right now.

I used to upload from a onedrive map but that no longer works, whereas 
looking in the browser on the PC the + widget is missing.
Along with the new buttons for adds and tiktok type videos, instagram

I am very happy with my K-5, but am still looking forward to the K-new (as 
usual, I will wait a year before buying so that other people can identify the 
bugs).

I would very much like an articulating rear screen, though. I have missed some 
close-to-ground-level macro shots because there wasn’t room, or too much mud, 
to stretch out to see the screen. I have shot several events where it would 
have been very useful for over-the-heads shots, too.

My wife has a K-70, and I like the size and weight, but I find the user 
interface difficult unless one just wants straight “auto”.

It depends on your vision of state of the art, as I've said, while I 
don't have anything against an adjustable rear screen, either the one on 
the back of the K-1 or the fully articulating screen on, K-70 and K-P, 
but, it is more fragile and therefor something else you can break, and I 
seem to be able to break nearly anything.


It would be more convenient, but given the the cost of a K70 these days, 
(or it's upcoming successor), I think I'd get a one of them for whenever 
I really needed to use the flip out screen and use the solid body camera 
most of the time to lessen my chances of breaking the screen completely 
off, (I'm surprised I've never broken the pop up flash off a camera, but 
heck, I have several with that device and the day is still young).

movable screen in 2020 and there is no reason not to have it for new models.

I bet therefore that the final version of the new flagship will have it too.
The two videos demonstrate that Ricoh/Pentax put so much focus on the 
new non-mirrorless APS-C flagship for their fate in the coming years.
To compete with other top APS-C cameras such as of Fujifilm all features 
should therefore be state of the art.

I really like the way the flip-out screen on the K-1 works.

I rarely use Live View, but the few times I have used it the articulating screen 
on the K-1 has been a treat. I'm also impressed by how sturdy it is.


I thought I had all the lenses I was ever going to want after scoring the 
FA600/4, but somehow the D FA 85/1.4 has managed to insinuate itself into my 
Christmas wish list.


Too bad I'm too poor to have Christmas in July.

I frequently use the K-1’s articulated screen. All magazine art directors want 
the long lens ground level front 3/4 shot of race cars, exotics and muscle 
cars. With the flip up screen I no longer have to get down on the ground, a 
maneuver that grows more difficult with every passing year.

I also own a Ref Con A , but it is of no value for shooting small 
flowers or mushrooms with the camera near the ground unless you lay down.
Last time I used this angle viewer,  the plastic holder of the glass of 
the viewfinder of my MZ-S was damaged so since then  I never take off 
the rubber protection piece.
Many times for mushrooms I either use a bean bag or a wooden plate with 
an Arca-Swiss clamp screwed on top, so the viewfinder is too low.

I wouldn't mind mirrorless with its inherent light weight, but with all 
my Pentax lenses I'm hesitant to change brands.
And it is so useful now to be able to switch lenses of FF and APS-C in 
the Pentax system without any converters.
The K-1 is a perfect camera but not for carrying on long walks if 
combined with a tele.
As a walk-around camera I much like my K-5 with a small lens as the DA 
21/3.2,  but the fixed back screen is sometimes a handicap.
A compact APS-C with improved sensor and flip-out screen would therefore 
be on my wish list for Santa Claus.
In fact both K-70 and KP are good choices and we haven't seen yet what 
the new flagship has more to offer than a better prisma and two card slots.

What's the general consensus on the longevity of flip-out screens on
cameras? I suppose that the flexible conductors used to connect them
will break sooner or later, much like they do in other articulated parts

A flip out screen is extremely useful in taking pictures of flowers and 
mushrooms or critters close to the ground. Also for landscapes when on a 
tripod.

For me this is one of the most valued features of my K-1.

or text.

Perhaps it is attached to a spring for the panel to open.

I'm late to the party but I'll chime in, much like Doug my income is
highly variable these days (photography being what it is) but still I
value the work-flow inherent in LR enough to submit to their
ransom-ware tactics (which I loathe). I stay within LR for most of my
edits if possible and venture out to PS only when absolutely
necessary, all my images are accessible via a single catalogue (as I
am regularly required to delve into past shoots) and it's currently
sitting at just shy of 600k images without a hitch.

In the last year I've also been running an Xtouch Mini MIDI mixer via
MIDI2LR to facilitate direct control of my major adjustments and image
selection and this has significantly increased the pace of my
work-flow when managing larger shoots.
