The same here, options are linked to engine capacity, the higher the
engine capacity the greater the range of options, it's a PITA. In
there infinite wisdom the idiots who put together the Oz packages for
my vehicle excluded the CD stacker cable in the vehicle with the
smallest engine which means that I can have a cable put in for a
thousand bucks or so (and no, third party install is not a viable
option in this vehicle) or alternately not be able to play audio CDs
whilst using my nav. Also the nav unit is CD only and does not read
mp3 files however it does have a wide screen display (but you need a
third party buggery box to access and enable the AV in). Priceless.

It's even more of a hoot if you need something very simple doing, like adding a
towbar. My Mondeo: £140, done at my house in two hours, all inclusive. My
friends Espace, with CAN wiring: You need to give us a month's notice for
wiring additions, Sir. The specialist will be here on x. That's the only
date available for the rest of this year. It will take us most of the day.
That will be £600, plus the cost of the towbar. Sir.

2007-01-09 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The Prius with the JBL stereo option (included in the 2006 models
starting with option package #3, I think; I have option package #6)
has the hands-free option built in. It connected with the Treo 650
instantly.

The in-car address book, speed dial and voice phone control is
managed manually, independent of the phone. A bit of work to set up,
but it allows me to put the 10-15 numbers I want to have access to
quickly into the car explicitly and nothing else. If I need to call a
number not in the system, I activate it on the Treo directly and it
automatically connects with the hands-free system for the rest of the
usage.

The only two package options on the Prius above #6 were first the
navigation system and then the leather seats. I decided to save the
money ... GPS would be nice but I'm not willing to part with $1500
for it: it's not that important to me. A hand-held would be more
useful, when I need one.

I don't know about other vehicles but with Ford, most options are combined
in various packages, with a few being stand alone options. It helps in
design, supply on the assembly line with complexity

With my Boxster, most functional options were stand alone.

That is most definitely the case with Ford these days. In 2000 we
purchased a Mazda (Ford) Protege. Christie insisted on anti-lock
brakes and side curtain air bags. Apparently, these safety features
don't work properly without a sun roof, bigger engine, larger wheels
and an upgraded stereo. Oh, well.

Ordering cars with specific options instead of packages used to be
common. With today's promotions (special financing, rebates, etc.),
there is always a disclaimer. Must take delivery from dealer stock
or some such. When we lived in Heidelberg during the mid-80s my Dad
ordered an 85 Ford LTD from the States. He specified exactly what he
wanted on the car. Six months later, in 86, we received a car that
wasn't quite what he ordered. (Mom wanted to buy a Volvo locally, but
Dad wouldn't have any of that.) Two weeks later, doing about 60mph on
the Autobahn (because the POS wouldn't go much faster than that) the
crankshaft came apart. It sat at a local Ford dealer for about two
months while they waited on a replacement engine.

LOL ... Text messages are not part of the Prius' hands free system. :-)

However, there are packages for the Treo that allow voice control
that allow you to automate sending text messages if you really really
must.

More importantly, how many how big are the cup holders, does it have
a curry hook as standard and a hot/cold drink warmer/cooler?

These are the more important features IMHO.

I can't use my (Bluetooth) Treo 700w with my (Bluetooth) BMW Z4, even
though the BMW supposedly offers full integration - sound through the
car audio speakers, and a microphone on the steering column. That's
because the car wants to know the contents of the phone book (so it
can identify an incoming call on the in-car display, etc.). But it
expects phone numbers to consist of just the digits 0-9. Unfortunately
the Treo is a Windows Mobile 5 device, and uses Outlook Mobile as the
contact manager. This displays phone numbers formatted for human eyes
complete with parentheses and hyphens. This upsets the car, and so it
drops the Bluetooth connection :-(

Because of the level of integration (they have you over a barrel with
the new cars, mine contains three discrete wired networks adding
peripheries is quite difficult) and the fact that I do not modify
vehicles, the cost to insure here soar with mods and I want to be able

Priceless.

I don't know about other vehicles but with Ford, most options are combined
in various packages, with a few being stand alone options. It helps in
design, supply on the assembly line with complexity

With my Boxster, most functional options were stand alone.

Now that is one thing you can definitely blame on Windows.
Windows Mobile only allows for some specific screen resolutions.
That includes 320x240 and 240x240 (and even 640x380), but not
320x320.

That said, though, the 240x240 on a 700w looks pretty darn sharp.

Its Ford way of catching up. My understanding it will have the capabilities

I get press releases from the North American International Auto Show.
Today, I received a summary of a joint release from Ford and
Microsoft saying that all Ford vehicles will be equipped with
wireless routers and internet receivers. I'm not sure how this will
work or what the details might be. It could be much ado about
nothing. But I'm going down to the show tomorrow to do a few pics for
clients, so i'll try to get the full text of the release.
