Re: HD Pentax DA 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED DC WR
The general impression of the 18-135 I got while researching the matter for a friend, was that the Pentax version wasn't the best available in that focal length range, that honor fell to the Nikon. The conventional wisdom is that a shorter zoom range makes it easier to design and build an overall better lens, so by that reasoning and the fact that the Pentax 18-135 isn't the best... Well really I can't make a determination based on current knowledge. Sure it will probably be better, on average, but we won't know if it really will be and how much until a few get out there for review and testing, after all there are a lot of variables to be considered. Personally I'd not worry about it, if you're happy with the results you get from the 18-135, there's no need to speculate. On 10/30/2014 8:52 AM, Daniel J. Yea, it means Ricoh marketing is bankrupt of ideas, since H(igh) D(efinition), doesn't really mean anything since being taken over by market speak. Oh, and they have no connection to the past. Supposedly HD was used because the new coating process has no connection to the SMC process at all, but somehow I think that's just hype too. On 10/30/2014 4:40 PM, Daniel J. Re: HD Pentax DA 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 ED DC WR
My only comment is that Ricoh Pentax is now producing 7 zooms in the normal / long normal zoom range: 16 -85 f3.5-5.6 16-45 f4 16-50 f2.8 17-70 f4 18 - 55 f3.5-5.6 18 - 55 II f3.5-5.6 18-135 f3.5-5.6 Obviously there are differences in focal length, features, etc. The 16-50 f2.8 really is in its own category and there is clearly a significant difference in zoom range from the shortest (16-45) to the longest (18-135). But - the line up also seems to be somewhat redundant and I for one would like to see new products that help diversify offerings. Mark On 10/30/2014 9:33 AM, Daniel J. I am in travel mode and neglected to carry my crystal ball. So I am not absolutely certain, but I predict that the 16-85mm will be wider, shorter, and with better or worse IQ. But maybe about the same. stan Sent from my iPad On Oct 30, 2014, at 1:30 PM, Mark Roberts postmas...@robertstech.com wrote: Daniel J. Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that only the limited series has been completely revamped with new markings and coatings. The HD 55-300 WR is the only other DA lens to receive the new treatment as far as I knew. I have one and asides from being decentered (its going back) the flare resistance is truly superb as is the rendering.
