Lightroom is a brilliant program, and I'm very glad I have it.

The UI is a bit weak in some respects, though, and the documentation is awful.

There is also an option to find missing files (ie files that have been
moved). LR will tell you when you try to look at/edit an image that is
in the database, but isn't where LR thinks it is.

Using this feature, instead of synchronising, keeps all collections,
tag etc. intact.

Live learn.

Cheers,

Dave

2008/12/28 Rick Womer rwomer1...@yahoo.com:
My list of folders was getting cumbersomely long, so I decided to create a
folder for each year, and sort my existing folders into them.

To do so, I used the Mac's Finder, and then had LR2 synchronize the folders.

 Bad idea.

I had to delete all of the now-empty ghost folders from the list in LR,
which was a minor pain. I went away and did other things while LR restored
the previews, which could have been a moderate pain but wasn't.

The major pain is that all of my Collections are now empty. Aargh.

What I should have done is to have right-clicked on the top folder in my
hierarchy in Lightroom, chosen Create Folder inside ---, and then moved
 things around within LR.

Of course, if Adobe had put these tasks in a menu, OR had documentation that
was worth more than a maggot-ridden turd, I would have known this before I
 started.

The purchase of one of the Lightroom for Dummies style of books is pretty
much a must buy with the software. I picked up Scott Kelby's book. If you
can get past his rather annoying writing style, his information is solid.

2008-12-28 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
There are tons of Lightroom books and tutorials available. You don't
have to experiment and make cataclysmic experiments afresh for
everything you do. Look up what's required first.

One hint: If you're going to do major catalog reorganization like
this, it's always best to create a new catalog, populate it with a
small number of files and folders, etc first, and experiment on that
before tackling your main working catalog. I test out everything
that's unclear to me this way first so as not to cause myself days of
pain.
