While it would be more technically perfect if the flash was not blown out, in an image as unusual as this, exposure becomes somewhat less important than the actual event. If it was not blown out it would be invisible. Wouldn't it? Why? Exposure settings at capture would have the same effect on this image as it does with any other image it should be possible to record the strike such that it would be less over exposed. Of course this would be done @ the expense of the exposure of foreground elements.
