The shot requires a macro as shown. I ?The snowdrop is the size of a
fingernail. My lens is only a couple oof inches away. The way to nail it would
be by focus stacking at f4 or so.But I don’t have time or energy for that.

Re: PESO Snowdrop 2019

A longer lens would have helped. I've recently started using a close focusing
300 for shots like yours, of course you need a longer working distance which
might not have been possible.

Of course, if you're going farther with this image you could help it in
processing.

Thanks Mark. It helps to have a fully open bloom in the right position. But I
like the new lens as well, although it feels cheap compared to my old Series 1
Vivitar. Of course I paid over $500 for the new Pentax lens and about $130 for
the classic Series 1.

but the Vivitar was the original classic from the 1970s.

Re: PESO: Snowdrop

2012-03-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
I don't know how many versions there were. But the first one, which is
generally considered the best, is very heavy and is of thick metal
construction. It can focus on objects at up to 1: 2 imaging -- half size on the
negative or sensor. It comes with an optical adapter that attaches to the rear
of the lens and enables 1:1 full-size macro work. It has the metal front lens
cap with the Vivitar Series 1 logo. It would be very expensive if made today.
It was made in both screw mount and K-mount. I think it dates from around 1979.
About ten years ago they were selling used for around $250. Not sure what
they're going for now.

To the one you have as the first in the group
... like the bokeh better than the ones on  solid black, which seem to me a
bit too clinical and the raindrop is nice too.
But really,  a very handsome group overall.  A couple of them look rather
 like alien spaceships or creatures...
Certainly hope you do more of this sort

I prefer this one (the last in line)

http://efeatherstone.dyndns.org/~ericf/photos/2011-02-13/content/IMGP4415_large.html

To the one you have as the first in the group
... like the bokeh better than the ones on
solid black, which seem to me a bit too clinical and the raindrop is nice too.

But really, a very handsome group overall. A couple of them look rather like alien spaceships or
creatures...

Certainly hope you do more of this sort

Thanks for the suggestion, Rick. I'll take a look at that.

 Paul,

I always look forward to your annual snowdrop pic, and
was wondering when it would appear!

On this one, I would crop out the right 40%. The
composition is heavy on the left, and the large OOF
flower on the right is distracting.

Snowdrops (didn't know that's what they are called) have a beautiful
shape and appear absolutely pristine.
In your place, I'd, also, be pleased about their appearance.
Sorry to say, but it feels heavy and cluttered to the left, Paul.

Paul,
You got even closer this year. Nice!
I think my snowdrop (only 1 survivor) is gone.
It sure was nice out today in Chicago.
