Pushing the limits, hey? Not bad at all. I am very satisfied with my 55-300 
too. It definitely outperforms the FA 100-300.

along the lower back just above the very dark lower
tail area. When pulled up, it's clearly a bit of mating plumage. Is that the 
area your identifying?

This is definitely one of the best egret shots I've seen in a while.  
Amazing detail in the perfect exposure as evident in the birds legs  
and feet.
The bokeh is very pleasing also. Makes me want to use my Tokina even  
more now. Were you using a tripod for this shot?

Thanks, Jay.  This was shot handheld.  Yeah, that Tokina is a fine
lens.  A few years ago, I had a Pentax A 400/5.6 lens.  I have found
the Tokina to be a pretty similar performer (closer focusing, by far)
in a much more compact and usable package.  It is a keeper for sure.

hand held , this image shows no camera movement what so ever and has

Lovely, Bruce, lovely -- from composition to OOF. There does seem to be a 
tiny speck right above his hump you might want to take out. Not sure what it 
is, 
but it may have been dirt or something.
