Maybe they've just been beat down like the Uwharrie Mountains of NC; maximum elevation 1,188 ft. Supposedly 500 million years ago the Uwharries peaked at over 20,000 ft. Even though they're worn & stooped over now, they're still "mountains" the way aging boxing legends are still "The Champ" long after the title has passed on to younger contenders. The color change starts in the western part of the Upper Peninsula and gradually heads east and then south to the Lower Peninsula. There can be fall color somewhere on Michigan for 6 weeks or so, generally starting late September most years.
