I like his more recent stuff the best out of those shown.. 2014-2016...
the two lead off photos in that article

illustrate what I don't like - overly worked on for painterly effect.
My two faves are the Bethlehem one and the Barstow Texas.  The
Bethelemen reminds me of David Plowdens

work and the Barstow is one I wish I'd taken :-)

thanks for pointing him out

2017-08-19 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Eric said: "I take it the subject is the beauty of the land, Dan."

The subtitle of the book is "America’s beauty in photographs." It's clear
he sees that beauty best when devoid of humans, or nearly so.
I am neither agreeing with that premise nor criticizing it; jut noting
that it tis his apparent point of the view.

I don't know what it means to "Have respect for the landscape." I enjoy
landscapes of all kinds, but whether I respect them in the morning is a
separate issue.

As to Spenser's images, they are interesting and unusual. He seems to love
fog and mist -- and vignetting, and yellow tints.

He won't make people forget Ansel Adams, but has a unique viewpoint.

I take it the subject is the beauty of the land, Dan. What's your reaction to
the mages?

In a week or so I'll be taking off for a camping trip the full length of the
Blue Ridge Parkway. I'll be taking my camera(s). I imagine there'll be lots of
photographs. I imagine the subject will be the landscape, allowing for elements
of human intervention. I don't know if there will be any people.

My own NSH take is that America would be not just a more beautiful place but a
better place if we paid more attention to/had more respect for the landscape.

I have always admired Frank Lloyd Wright. On visit to Fallingwater this
summer I
learned about his principle of "organic design": Fit the design to the
landscape, not the landscape to the design. We have nearly wrecked the American
landscape with design that has no respect for it.

Forgive me for going OT.
