Excellent shots all round but only a few fit my depraved idea of how
an alleyway should look.

To me, an alley way is a run down, dangerous place with drunks,
addicts, rubbish & emaciated alley cats in evidence. Nothing like that
here but I've seen them in some of the cities.

Very nice.

With no large-aperture wide-angle for that system, the ISO must be
stretched pretty far to make the dust lanes in the galaxy appear.

To get the same AoV of my 24 on the K-1 you'd need 36 on the 645Z. Do
remember that the ones I posted were stitched panoramas. Interesting,
I tried poking around on ebay  and the wide angle options seem to be
35 f3.5 or 45mm f/2.8

https://www.ebay.com/sch/3323/i.html?_fsrp=1&_nkw=pentax+645+wide+angle&_sacat=3323&_from=R40=nc=Pentax

KEH doesn't really show anything else
https://www.keh.com/shop/lenses/pentax-645-a--pentax-645-fa--pentax-67-.html?multi=true

I'm rather surprised by this.

From looking at Larrys shots, I believed the quality of the
foreground would be the decisive factor for whether a result would be
print worthy.

It is my experience that photos of just the sky get very boring very
quickly, even if it's an amazing image of the sunset, milky way etc.
And as far as the night sky goes, there is nothing I can do that you
can't download better versions of from the Hubble archives.  I always
try to put something interesting in front of a pretty sky.

With that in mind, I took an extra long exposure at a lower ISO and
smaller aperture to see if they could be combined effectively in post.
That turned out to be more finicky than I had hoped, even with no
fluttering vegetation to move between or during exposures. Or maybe
I'm just too tired to be efficient now (it's 3 am).

I haven't yet experimented much with lighting my subject on the ground
when putting the sky in the background.

Here's one I did in Rhyolite outside of Death Valley
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/11770425926/in/album-72157639425946344/

Anyway, I think the technique may have some merit for the right kind
of foreground.

I'd like to try it with nudes, as has been observed a nude in the
foreground can improve a photo with almost any background. There are
some major depth of field challenges there. But I suppose that someone
with focus stacking software could do two fifteen second exposures,
with the foreground subject lit with a flash and one image focused on
the foreground and the other focused on the background, and let the
focus stacking software sort out which frame to grab which heavenly
bodies from.

Sky exposed for 15 seconds at f/4.5 and ISO 12800.
Foreground exposed for 8 minutes at f/8 and ISO 800.
Tonal PP done in LR. Pasted the two together in photoshop.

Sounds familiar. Our main telco (Telstra) had a serious outage yesterday and
claim they don't know why.

Fortunately I wan't affected by that but I've just spent another day without
internet courtesy of the f***ed up system that is our National Broadband

does your birding friend have a wish list for specific flora? When we

specific locations and species.  They had to be razor sharp and well

Hi Larry,

Definitely a Red-tailed Hawk (adult). At first I thought it was the pale
prairie subspecies often referred to as a "Krider's" Red-tailed Hawk,
but the extensive belly band and the tail with orange going all the way
to the base (rather than with an extensive whitish wash at the base and
orange only on the outer half), leaves me to think this is what is often
called a pale-morph Red-tailed Hawk. Red-tails are extremely variable
and can range from very pale like this one to almost entirely
chocolate-brown.

Fantastic photos - thanks for sharing them!

We don’t get many big brawny birds here in the heartland. But today a
hawk landed in a nearby spruce while I was shooting dinky sparrows and
chickadees. Not easy to identify him sitting in a tree, and at first I
thought it was Cooper’s Hawk.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/4o9lnaof9xso1x0/8136.jpg?dl=0

But I got one throwaway shot of him in flight, and due to the wing
markings and the broad red tail, I think he’s a red-tailed hawk.

What say you?

Re: **JUNK** Re: GESO -- The Game.

2017-12-23 Thread Paul Stenquist
That’s what happens when I type on my phone at 0-dark-30, Michigan and Harvard
played 8 times beginning in 1891. They were 4-4. Michigan lists national
championships for 1902, 03 and 04, among many others, but I think it was known
as “Championship of the West” back then and didn’t include the Ivy League.

By the way, Michigan considers its game against Ohio State to be “the game,”
although in truth the Michigan State game is a bigger deal in much of the home
state, especially since MSU has been beating up on old blue in recent years.

Not all that cheap - 1TB drives start at around $50 - $60 nowadays; 2TB around
$20 more,
and 4TB $30 above that.

That's for external drives in a USB3.0 enclosure; internal drives are slightly
cheaper
(except that, strangely, the cheapes 4TB internal drive I found cost $120).

Re: Question re Xfif data from K3

I'm pretty sure that the name of the Camera is in a standard location,
or has a standard tag, (not sure how the standard part of EXIF is
implemented, and not curious enough to find out), in plain text.  A lot
of other information is just number, maybe numbers and letter, strings
associated with a tag, that require a lookup table.

The fields are there but that version doesn't know how to interpret

It's been a while since I've looked at the details of EXIF, but IRC, the
information about the shutter modes is written in the "Makernote" field

(if it is written).
The format of that field is brand-dependent, and probably
camera-dependent. What I mean by the latter, is that it probably gets
changed in the more recent cameras.
In some (many?) cases its format is not even published by the
manufacturer, but rather reverse-engineered by software developers.

CS2 is ancient (nothing wrong if it works for you), so, most likely it's
just unaware of the K-3's Makernote format and cannot decipher it
properly.

Changing mandated mandated behavior of a system. on a whim to "fix"

high water that he's right while users scream at him is worse than a sin.

No truly successful organization that I've ever worked for would have let

Thanks Toralf, that suggestion makes the change almost palatable.
You're right. The actual behavior is still wrong, but until the current
lead on the bug fix either is fired, quits, retires or or dies, I expect
that the change in reply to behavior will stay. Because some people
are incapable of admitting they are ever wrong.

;-)

On a serious note, speaking of that "reply"-button problem, - have
you (and everybody else on the list who suffers from it) submitted a
bug report on it?

If not, - you should.
As I sort of said elsewhere, I did. Unfortunately, the report got
marked as a duplicate of another issue (which I didn't notice when
searching), and that issue is marked as WONTFIX. But I'm still shouting.

1. They might not be aware of it.
2. They might not think that change was a problem...
Part of the issue seems to be that one of the developers behind the
change has decided that it's not a problem, no matter how many people
say that it is in fact a problem.

3. The priority of the problem fixing is decided by the overall
loudness (hence the number) of complaints.

... but even some loudness might still help, perhaps...

Meanwhile, I found that the situation gets a little better if you

1. Right-click on the header in the message view and select
"Customise..."

2. Drag the button marked "Reply" from the main window to the
"Customise Toolbar" window (so as to remove it from the view.)
3. Press Done in the window I just mentioned.

The message view will then only have a "Smart reply" button which
alternates between "Reply", "Reply All" and "Reply List" depending on
the context. (Note that the behaviour changes compared to when you
also have the "normal" "Reply" button, because then the "Smart Reply"
then hides itself in some cases.)

Actually, the situation might be acceptable if you could also add
"Smart reply" to the main tool-bar and have a keyboard short-cut for
it. There are bug reports related to this, too, but they're not
exactly new, so there is a question of whether the issues will ever be
addressed.

I still think the "Reply" implementation is wrong in principle, though...

As I sort of said elsewhere, I did. Unfortunately, the report got marked

and that issue is marked as WONTFIX.

1. Right-click on the header in the message view and select "Customise..."
2. Drag the button marked "Reply" from the main window to the
"Customise Toolbar" window (so as to remove it from the view.)
3. Press Done in the window I just mentioned.

The message view will then only have a "Smart reply" button which

Re: Fwd: Re: Stuck Battery In Pentax Q

2017-06-07 Thread John Francis

The chemistry of old single-use batteries and modern rechargeable batteries
is very different. You could, if you wanted to, cut an old battery in half
without much happening. That's not true of something like a lithium ion
cell (as can easily be seen on youtube), so those tend to be enclosed in
a reasonably strong airtight and watertight casing. Old cells were not,
so if the battery began to degrade you could end up with some fairly nasty
chemicals forcing their way out of the battery and ending up all over the
inside of whatever you were using the battery in.

The Q-S1 was the latest model but even that's been canned as far as I
know.

I use my Q (original model) as a take anywhere system - I never leave
home without it. The body and two zooms take up almost no space.

Pocketability? With the original 01 prime lens it wont fit in the pocket
of tight jeans (not that I wear them!) but it can fit into a larger
pocket.

Re: OT: Re: PESO. Electrical activity

2016-12-04 Thread Bruce Walker
Depends on your use. Photobucket appears to be just a kind of one-off
image hosting service. Useful as a place to stash a single image and
share a link to it. Personally I have limited use for that.

I prefer to be able to create galleries of related images as well as
sharing links to individual images. Flickr is still good for that,
though a few folks here have issues with it.

Tumblr seems to be quite good as a place for both small galleries and
single images. If you choose a clean profile template your Tumblr will
be nice looking too.

Both Flickr and Tumblr have been around for a long time and appear to
have years ahead of them, unlike many of the random image hosting
sites. Both are free to use too.

Some folks really like 500px. I don't, but you might, so have a look.

Not many realize it but Twitter allows posting images and sharing a
link to it. It's not the best looking place, but it's free and works.
And it renders images fast.

Ok. Assume I have never owned any Pentax auto focus lens from the 1990s :-)

Which I haven't.

Basically, what I would like to know is this: if the lens was place onto
an adaptor and used on a completely different camera body - eg
effectively no electrical connection between lens and said body - would
the lens act as a manual focus / manual aperture lens?

Yes.

Yes, just like an old fashioned manual focus lens. It's nicely damped

Oh good!

What about the aperture ring - if the camera lens is not attached to a
camera body and the aperture ring is turned, I presume the iris remains
open (to allow for open aperture metering?)

It works just like any other K/KA mount lens. It defaults to stop down
metering if there's no stop down lever to hold the aperture open.

Nope. No focus by wire. It's old school, at least as old school as an
auto focus lens can be. To override auto focus you must disengage the
lens from the screw drive by switching off AF on the body. The one I
have is older and a bit beat up, the gears no longer mesh quite
perfectly so there's a slight whirring sound during manual focusing. It
doesn't bother me since I don't shoot video, but it is noticeable, and
probably happens to all copies as they age.

So if the lens is not attached to a camera body, if you turn the focus
ring, does the lens focus?

Indeed. I love it.

My original post was a the temporary home page of Amazon, immediately

Ann, I didn't realize you hadn't received my reply to your off-list
email. I'm using PE10.

I gathered that :-)

Applied your system (with variations) of

conversion in __random sequences.

Umm well, the sequence I did it in seems to matter..

Desaturate first, then save in gray-scale, then adjust
brightness and contrast and crop to taste.

I used elements 5.0 where there is a pull-down with 3 sliding things
for Hue, saturation, and lightening...

ON the one I sent I see no halos.. why don't you post that
and see what happens when others view on their monitors - might help
figure things out. I don't think showing what I did to it on my web site
would help as it adds another variation in technology.

Hope we can get it figured out for you

ann

When I was content with the detail

and contrast in the primary elements, I left it at that.
Thanks, Ann, Bruce and Bulent.
