The Paris forage was shot in the mid 1930s. Continental kits were common on
passenger cars. Of course they didn't refer to them as such. Edsel started that.

There is another major drawback to this. A punctured tyre can usually be
vulcanised in a workshop and will be as good as new.

But not after the chemical repair kit has been used. Then it will only
be good for the way to the next garage at no more than 80 km/h. There,
you'll have to buy a new one. Now, have this happen with a tyre that's
worn by more than, say, a third and you'll have to buy not one but two
new tyres where you'd have had a simple 20 euro repair before.

With all my driving around in ports and former industrial sites I end up
with a punctured tyre about once a year. Buying one or two new tyres
each time would soon add up to a lot of money.

Ralf

When I was driving my MGB, I carried a spare tube & a kit for patching
punctured tubes, along with a couple of irons & a bottle of soap.
Eventually, I got pretty proficient at getting the the tube out & back in.

My Cayman GTS comes with a compressor and a can of sealant. You add the
sealant to the tire, roll the tire a revolution or two and pressurize the

Wish there'd be something like this for today's vehicles. I'd like to have
our car converted to LPG, if I only knew where to put the spare wheel.

1. The tire is obviously the Continental kit.
2. wrt the bumper, it's the ski boat version :-)

Apparently to protect the spare.

actually the mounting of tires externally on the body goes way back in
automotive
history, but the trend was over by the sixties. It was still very popular
in the

mid to late 50's however.

I think this might shed some light on it. At first I thought that was
an aftermarket edition, but ford did offer that bumper as a package.
It looks like that was very much in vogue at the time to have a spare
mounted on the rear like that. Ford just went crazy with it. I looked
and there are other examples of edsels like that so it wasn't
uncommon.
