Going well SO FAR! 

I hope all the rest of y'all have a good turkey day.

little too warm all I gotta' do is open the back door & let a little
cooler air in.

Got family coming, so I gotta' get back to work.

A belated Happy Thanksgiving to you too Paul! Nice article from the NYT.
My wife has a bit of family here but Thanksgiving is the holiday for
visiting family that is further out. We used to host our parents who
were nearby but they are gone. Since we have no kids its a quiet holiday
now, with just us and a friend or two. Christmas is much more
celebratory but thanksgiving has become a peaceful happy day.

Re: Thanksgiving Flower Small geso

2014-11-20 Thread Don Guthrie
Thanks Igor, I agree the 1st one is a little more dramatic. There is
also a variety commonly called Easter Cactus, they can be distinguished
by the leaf pattern. I think they can all be induced to bloom anytime of
year by keeping them dry and in the dark for a period of time. I have
not heard the term decembrist... interesting.

Hi Don,

Nice flowers!
I agree with others that the first photo seems to be the best of the
three. For my taste, the second one would have benefited from a bit more
space around it, especially at the bottom. But that's my taste.

My mom has had such flowers for many years (and still has) at her home.
The interesting thing is the name. In Russia they are called
decembrist, primarily because they bloom in December.
I also remember somebody in Texas using the same name.
I googled, and found some references to that name being used in Brazil.
But it looks like most people in the US call it thanksgiving
or christmas cactus.

Those are gorgeous, Don ! I'd pick a favorite but I like them all a lot.
I'm hoping my draecena will give me that hat trick this year...
should know in another week or 10 days. crossed fingers appreciated.

suggestion for watermark for less intrusiveness but still helpful for ?
protection - a file saved as .png with transparent background , reduce
white font to less 50% opacity then outine the font.

Remember what happened with my watermarks:-) I don't use *print*marks
anymore, of course.

Re: Thanksgiving Flower Small geso

2014-11-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

PESO: Thanksgiving Turkeys

2013-12-05 Thread Charles Robinson
I used the DA35 exclusively at our Thanksgiving dinner this year. It sure
makes the K5 quite unobtrusive compared to the massive 16-50!

I took this shot of my eldest grandson:

http://charles.robinsontwins.org/photos/2013/thanksgiving/content/K5__7270_large.html

It doesn't seem like much until I notice that it's so dim in the room (and the
K5 is so sensitive) that you can see his face illuminated from the screen of
the phone.

Bonus shot: His 6-month-old kid brother being flown across the living room:

They can be quite nasty. We used to have a flock of 8-9 in the woods
west of our home, and they would make a mess of our deck planters and
then poop all over the deck. UGH. They would also peck on the glass
walls of our sun room. I'm not sure whether they were fighting with
their own reflections or trying to get at the plants inside the room.

30C ain't all that bad. Especially if the humidity is low.

It regularly gets up to 40C around here in high summer, often with 100%
relative humidity.

At the moment it's close to 0C around here. I'd rather have the 30C. 30C
is a really nice late spring day.

2013-11-30 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Paul, Ken, Dan, Jack, Jostein and others...

This tom is one of three young (18-24 month) bachelors who hang around our
yard, steal from our bird feeders, roost in one of our trees. Two older larger
toms come around occasionally and do their display thing. There was a small
flock of hens, one of the younger ones had a brood of about 12 this spring; she
and the young 'uns travel more widely through the neighborhood but often roost
in the tree here as well. We occasionally see the other older hens. They all do
make a mess with their droppings and scratching for food, and they do
persistently bang on the floor-to-ceiling windows. I've tried yelling, chasing
and yelling, and spraying with a high-pressure water hose. They know I am not
really going to hurt them and they keep coming back...

Same to you, Paul! And a Happy T-day to all. Sorry I’m a little late—bit of a
rush yesterday with cooking and all.

In the interest of balance, I thought about doing some nudes of our
Thanksgiving Tom, but I couldn’t find aesthetically pleasing lines and forms,
and since it’s been so cold, our Thanksgiving Tom was all goose-bumpy,
requiring way too much photoshopping. Moreover, the kitchen fluorescents
rendered him overly sexualized resulting in overt objectification, which
clearly would have offended the sensitive. Maybe next year when I have a
proper studio! :-)

Cheers, Christine

Thanks Bob.
The count today was one swan and 10-15 turkeys passing through. The laws of
probability say that if you stick one white swan and 15 brown turkeys in a bag,
and then reach in and pull one out, your hand is going to be seriously mangled.
But also the likelihood that you grab a turkey is far greater than the
likelihood of grabbing a swan. And thus is history written.

They are all over the place here, and sorry, can't look at pictures of
them with any enjoyment.

There used to be an Eastern and a Western Wild Turkey. Now the ones we
have in California are Eastern Wild Turkeys. Because long in the past, ours
died out (or were all killed/eaten). Then someone had the bright idea of
introducing (re-introducing) the Eastern Wild Turkey to fill that niche. But
they no longer have that many (or any) natural predators and they have taken
off and taken over.

I've often wondered, looking at them, if they make good eating or not.

 Stupid. Annoying.

Little do they know about how long of their lives they have left :-).

I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God
might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are
beasts.

For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing
befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one
breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
