Those helicopter pilots have big brass balls, flying directly over all that heat smoke in such windy conditions with a massive weight of water slung below. My hat goes off to them. Mine too. It wasn't a helicopter but one of the fixed wing water bombers crashed while fighting fires on the south coast of New South Wales. It was in rugged country with swirling winds and lots of smoke. Sadly the pilot died. On a happier note, the fire danger has subsided in most areas with cooler temperatures. The fires are still burning and could break out again as there is no substantial rain on the forecast for the next week or so. ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ My mother in law's partner has family in the Blue Mountains but the last I heard they are safe and well. Quoting Alan C c...@lantic.net: Apart from the hot, dry weather, I suppose the multitude of Eucalyptus species is a big factor too? From the footage I've seen on TV, the whole area has thick vegetation. While we do have big bush fires here, they are mostly in rural areas with little threat to people property. Take care, mate. Thanks, Alan. Yes, the Blue Mountains is dominated by Eucs and the volatile oil in the foliage burns easily and ferociously. We're on the plains on the eastern side of the mountains and are less at risk but we still have stands of eucs and grassland so we'll be on alert. Quoting Ann Sanfedele ann...@nyc.rr.com: HOpe everyone is safe.. how awful it must be Thanks, Ann. I don't think anyone on PDML is directly affected at the moment. Apparently Wednesday is going to be the critical day. If the current fires in the Blue Mountains join up, many of the townships in the mountains will be at risk. Today the smoke haze is the worst problem in Western Sydney - viability is down to a few hundred metres. -- Cheers Brian ++ Brian Walters Western Sydney Australia http://lyons-ryan.org/southernlight/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

My mother is in Winmalee; the Springwood fire got into her street (Muru Ave) but 400m downhill from her, and moved away. We went through the same thing in 1994, but you never get used to it. We're coming up to Sydney on Thursday night (we now live in Melbourne, 900km south); I'm concerned about what I'll see. The fires in NSW are terrible, fortunately I'm over a thousand kilometres away from Sydney, but we will probably have our turn later this year.
