A friend commented favorably on facebook about this shot, so I thought I'd
share it:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/5884997801/

Last night I was experimenting with having a friend hold my FGZ540 while I
triggered it wirelessly. I played with different light modifiers on it, I
think this shot was gridded, it was at least snooted.

Shot with an A* 200/2.8 on my K-5.

 Larry,

Thank you.

Using the A200/2.8 for portraits with flash is unusual.

If everybody did it, then there would be no need for me to. :-)

One of the things that I've been playing with is tight cropping. It seems that
if I just crop off a little bit of someone's toe or a bit of their shoulder it
looks like I've made a mistake. But if I come in extremely tight so that I just
have the bare minimum of what absolutely has to be there, then I also get rid
of almost every distracting bit of cruft that doesn't have to be there, and the
pictures turn out a lot better. Lighting the subject from the side also helps,
because they're lit, and all the extraneous crap on the bar, or restaurant
walls, is just lost in the dark.

It looks like you have the details mastered!

Thanks, though I wouldn't go that far. I think I've got a start on some
interesting concepts to play with, and hope that I have many opportunities for
improvement over this.

I especially like how the guy is so sharp.

It is a wonderful lens. Especially when the flash lets me stop it down a bit.

Also, thanks to Christine.

   Larry

Thanks. I was hoping that the popup flash would provide a bit of fill, but I
guess that it didn't have the oomph. I wish that I had a ring flash to use to
play with fill on shots like these. Just enough to illuminate the subject but
not enough to illuminate the background. Though that would require being fairly
close to get several stops difference using inverse square.
