I agree. I rarely get comments from strangers on Facebook, since my posts are
“friends only.” I try to participate here, but it’s rare that I get meaningful

When my girlfriend and I were caravan touring in North Wales
(with an itinerary set from information in the Good Beer Guide)
we ended up at one pub which was basically just the front room
of a house; beer was obtained via a hatchway to the kitchen
where there were a couple of casks sitting on a shelf.
The pub was a couple of miles up a hill (along a very narrow
road; there wouldn't have been anywhere to turn round).
When we walked in we got some very suspicious looks - not
only were we strangers, but one was a woman! (the only other
woman there was the person serving the drinks). When we asked
for two pints you could sense the tension in the room subside.

If you're too hot, how do you cool down? I had the fan on, water spraying,

So the answer is to simply feel ill for a week and do nothing?

Spraying water probably didn't help. Raises the humidity instead of lowering it.

At high humidity levels sweat just pools and doesn't provide any cooling effect
from evaporation.

Get a portable DE-humidifier.

2020-08-20 Thread John

Hah!

30C -35C (86F - 95F) ain't a heatwave. That's just what we call SUMMER
(July/August) around here.

It depends on the humidity as well as what you're used to.

I've got window units that keep the house at 80F (26.6C) with the humidity
between 40% - 50% in here.

Any less humidity is bad for the wood in my guitars.

A couple of floor fans to move the air around helps. Moving air takes sweat away
more efficiently, so you don't notice the heat as much.

And down where Igor lives (Ft Hood is about 90 miles as the crow flies) it
regularly tops out over 100F (37.7C) and the humidity hit 100% every day in
July/August when I was there.

Holy moly. Anything over 25 is murder for us!

I've got 2 portable AC units and during the recent heatwave here (temps 30-35
daily for over a week) they were both being used, one in my home office all
day and the other to cool the bedroom down in the evening (temps drop back to
about 20 at night). The Mrs and I felt awful during the excess heat and
prevents us from functioning properly. The AC was essential for us. Global
warming or not.

wrapped in a blanket because she now is chilly. So I turn the temp up a
bit.

RE: Quiet List

2020-08-19 Thread jcoyle
Bob has a point about house design. Here in Queensland, where we put on
sweaters below 20C, the traditional house was built with wide and shaded
verandas and with plenty of windows you could open to allow air circulation.
In addition, often there would be a central corridor with doors at both ends to
promote even more airflow, and often built on stilts ("highset" is the term).
Nowadays, of course, all that has been thrown out of the window, and most
modern housing is either apartment blocks or brick veneer "lowset" houses with
no veranda at all, and set on a concrete pad with no underfloor circulation!
Brick veneer buildings have an outer skin one brick wide and are timber framed
inside, so almost no insulation unless they are filled with plastic foam.
In our winter right now, yesterday the temperature range was 9-28, today the
forecast is 14-24, so I'll be wearing a light jumper!

I have two large central air conditioning units, one for the upper floor and
another for the main floor and lower level. They are both set to maintain 71
degrees F, which they can do when outdoor temps hit 90 while running only a
couple of hours a day. The house is well insulated and shaded by trees for much
of the day. July saw at least ten days of 90 degree weather. My electric bill
was about $200. Our stove and ovens are electric as well. My wife has severe
allergies and is totally miserable in summer without AC. Each unit is fitted
with an electrostatic air cleaner and accordion filter, so they reduce
allergens significantly.

Sorry but I don't understand that way of thinking.

By those terms, in the middle of winter, I should only use the central heating
up to a certain point and just 'make do' while shivering in the cold.

I use a portable air conditioner, which uses a fan and a compressor requiring
electricity. We live in a modest 2.5 bedroom house built in the 1980s which is
fairly energy efficient. The upstairs gets very hot (even with curtains closed
and signs on the window saying 'fuck off hot weather') and prevents proper
sleeping patterns, leading to inability to cope. I put it on up there for a
couple of hours to cool the room down to match the outside temps so we can at

We live smack in the very centre of a city of one million, with outside
walls about half a meter thick. Once this building has heated up, it
stays hot day and night even after the heatwave has ended. Outside
temperatures rarely fell below 25 deg c at night, during the last two
weeks. Daytime highs were up to 37 c.

The most important thing is to keep an eye on temperatures, inside and
out. Open all windows as soon as it's cooler outside and close them as
soon as the sun hits the facade. Use venetian blinds and bedsheets at
the windows to keep the sun out.

Take lukewarm, not cold, showers. Don't drink liters of ice-cold stuff
straight from the fridge. A light T-shirt soaks up and evaporates sweat
and keeps you cooler than none at all.

Get up earlier than usual and use the cooler morning hours to do
demanding work or stuff that requires lots of concentration.

I'll be 66 in a few weeks, about a meter too short for my weight and not
exactly fit, but still, we've just survived another heatwave doing our
normal work without the help of air condtioning, the only exception
being the A/C in the car during the weekly shopping run.

having lived here for 46 years we are well acclimatized & dress
accordingly and, secondly, electricity is rather expensive. They way
they built houses here in the early days with normal high pitched roofs
& their accompanying air space was silly - flat roofed houses with a
small air space would have been much more appropriate. I doubt if any
houses here are double glazed but reflective solar film on the glass is
often used.

AC consumes over the course of the year isn't going to influence the weather by
enough to matter.

I don't use it the way many people do … running their AC continuously all
season long. It's the first time this year I've run either of the AC units in
the condominium, to counteract the way the concrete walls of the building have
soaked up heat and were re-radiating it indoors. Since Sunday, I've only
powered them up for a couple of hours to maintain a comfortable 84° interior
temperature, and they'll likely go off for the rest of the season after this
heat wave passes.

Oh yes, and I turn them off during peak energy hours since I really don't need
them that much and my place doesn't re-warm all that quickly due to the
double-pane, thermally insulating windows and such I've installed. Get the
place down to 81-85°F with the windows closed and on a 100°F day the heat rise
takes seven hours to reach parity with the outdoor ambient temperature. The key
to economical, conservationally proper use of power (and keeping the price
down) is to keep down the heat soak into furnishings in the interior which we
couldn't manage the other day without power to provide the AC. Most of the
energy we expended the other night was to get the chairs, sofa, bed, etc cooled
off as evening ground and wall temperatures drop those pretty quickly to
comfortable levels after the sun goes down.

Yes, I do think about all these things. :D

I've been playing around with two cheap microphones
over the weekend and this is what I've recorded outside my street-side
windows:

1. Saturday afternoon, people sitting in front of the café and the Greek
restaurant across our little square, some cars, and a rally of covidiots
around the corner...

2. Same location Sunday around noon, more people, less cars and the

Quiet list and soothing weather

2019-08-27 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
The list seems very quiet of late; where is everyone?
I took a long weekend trip to Virginia, to attend the memorial service for
one of my college roommates, who was killed recently when a car ran over
his bicycle from behind. I was also able to visit my nephew and his family
and spend time with an old Marine buddy.

The weather over the past 3-4 days has been a welcome relief, cool and
sunny, after weeks of hot steamy and violent weather.

It looks like Britain is experiencing tropical weather than the usual
cloudy, damp and wet conditions:
