Antlions prefer sandy soils. Larvae create pits by tossing sand grains over
their back, turning slightly, and tossing grains again. By repeating this while
moving in a circle, they create a funnel-shaped pit in the sand. It's fun to
watch when ants get caught in the pit. They try to crawl out, but little
landslides keep pulling them back in. If they might be able to get out, the
antlion larva at the bottom of the pit throws sand higher up the pit...this
causes a landslide in front of the ant that pulls it back down.

All you can see in the pit is the jaws of the larva protruding from the base of
the pit. When an ant finally slips to the bottom of the pit, the jaws grab it
and pull it under.

One anecdotal comment: Based on one unrepeated experiment, antlion larvae
apparently do not like ticks. I dropped one in a pit, the antlion pulled it
under, and a second or two later tossed the tick out of the pit. Living in a
hot spot for Lyme disease at the time, I was disappointed in the result. But I
had to try, right?

Don't know if you want to post this to the list or not. I found an adult
antlion which I understand is fairly rareI know that this is the only one
that I have ever seen. I found it on the exterior of one of our modern
buildings yesterday. I would love to see what Lou and the others know about
them. JTV

I'd agree with Louis. Moth looks like the webbing clothes moth. Small ant is
likely a pavement ant; would be good to get a clearer shot of the head.

2 ants. Large one looks like a de-alate queen carpenter ant. Maybe the small
one is a pavement ant (2-node), but not sure, could be something else. Need a
better view of it. The moth is a clothes moth (tineid).

Hello everyone,

I found a couple disconcerting pests today. I have my suspicions about what
they might be, but I'd like confirmation before I decide what actions to take.

Hi all,

One of our volunteers brought this into the museum last week while I was out,
and said she found it in her couch. Unfortunately, I've only seen the photos,
as she took it back home since I wasn't here. It does kind of look like a bed
bug, but seems to lack the point at the end of the abdomen and she said she
didn't see the distinctive horizontal sectioning you see with bed bugs. Any
thoughts? I'm curious in case it is a bed bug, but also if it's a pest that
just looks a lot like one. Apologies that the pictures aren't better.

Thank you!
Robyn

Tony’s analysis does seem more likely than mine. Either way, it seems to be a

I interpreted the two small dots at the back of the head as markings, rather
than ocelli, so dismissed Lygaeidae. The wing configuration seems much more
like Miridae, perhaps somewhere near Hoplomachus, but I don't really know the
North American fauna.

Jessica,

I could be wrong, but it looks like a member of the Lygaeidae (seed bugs) to me.

Hello,
I had sent this around previously but the message might not have gone through.
We found this inset crawling across the work bench in our lab. It is
approximately 4mm long. Any help with ID would be greatly appreciated.
All best,
Jessica

Lynsey,

Millipedes sometimes have irregular "migrations" where they can enter buildings
in large numbers. I'm not sure if we understand why. Try correcting any damp
situations outside (e.g., mulch or leaf litter next to the building), seal
cracks, and, if possible, keep an 18- to 36-inch vegetation-free zone around
the building.

Hi there,

One of the properties we manage is experiencing a problem with what appear to
be millipedes - please see first image attached. I'm not sure that they are
considered a museum pest, but believe that they are an indication of damp
(which we're already aware of). Can anyone provide any other advice on why we
may be seeing a sudden influx of these?

Additionally, another insect has been spotted that we can't identify (second
image). Does anyone recognise this?

Many thanks,

Lynsey
