Several people have noted that lizards get stuck in glue traps. If found alive
they can be released (outdoors) by putting a small amount of vegetable oil on
their stuck parts.

This was found on the floor of a Himalayan monastery storage room for sacred
art treasures.
What is it? It is approx 3 inches in diameter.

Thank you,

Hi Derya,
We have been advised to do this, and find it a bit daunting, as well. The
compelling particulars included finding adult powder-post type critters, who
fly away as they emerge . Given a large collection of architectural fragments
inspection is nearly impossible to find new-looking holes. We are skeptical
that the adults would come across a stumble trap. I don't think Ryan has found
a lot of time to do this and our filter-changing schedule covers dozens of
sites - and is managed by a team that doesn't have a simple or direct way of
telling us that dirty filters are ready to look at and then get hauled to the
dumpster - clearly we don't have a place to leave them sitting around.
I would love to get an entomologist's thoughts on this.

Hi Everybody, I was wondering if any of you check your HVAC filters for pests.
The idea has come up - when our pest control vendor mentioned that insects can
travel through HVAC systems and get from one part of the museum to another.
Does checking the filters give us a random sample of what might be around the
museum? Or is it overkill to look at these? Have any of you actually done this?
Our facilities staff gave me a used filter to look at today and it is pretty
large, I couldn't really think of a practical way to check them for insects
without having it take up a lot of my time.
best,

The founding members of the American Institute for Conservation Collections
Care Network (CCN) are excited to announce the network has been approved by the
AIC Board of Directors. Now we are beginning the work to create a voice for
collections care, preventive conservation, and all of its practitioners. On
January 31, founding committee members will meet to begin planning how we will
best encourage and implement the ideas voiced in the Charge prepared for the
CCN by the AIC Board of Directors and included in full below. We want to add
your ideas and concerns to that discussion. Please contact Rebecca Fifield at
rebecca.fifi...@metmuseum.orgmailto:rebecca.fifi...@metmuseum.org , no later
than January 30 with any comments, ideas or issues you would like the committee
members to consider at the Jan 31 meeting or in the coming months.

AIC Collection Care Network Charge

Purpose
The AIC Collection Care Network (CCN) was created in recognition of the
critical importance of preventive conservation as the most effective means of
promoting the long-term preservation of cultural property (Guidelines for
Practice of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic Artistic
Works, #20) and to support the growing number of conservators and collections
care professionals with strong preventive responsibilities and interests. Its
purpose is to:

  * Create awareness of preventive care
  * Identify and develop standards and best practices, training, and other
projects to advance preventive care in institutions of all types and sizes,
locally, nationally, and globally
  * Provide resources to support collection care and conservation
professionals
  * Work with related groups to reach and support key collections care
constituents

The Collection Care Network is a Division of the American Institute for
Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) and is therefore bound by the
Bylaws of the AIC and policies set by the AIC Board of Directors. Any
revisions to the CCN Charge require written approval by the AIC Board of
Directors.

Composition
The initial officers of the CCN are chosen by the organizing committee, in
staggered terms, and presented to the AIC Board of Directors for approval.
Thereafter, candidates for open positions are prepared by the CCN officers for
approval by the AIC Board of Directors. All officers must be current members of
AIC. Officers include a chair, vice chair, secretary, treasurer,
communications and outreach officer, editor, and chair emeritus. Terms of
office are three years with an option to serve a second term if other officers
approve. The Board liaison to the CCN is the Board Director for Committees
Task Forces; the staff liaison is the Membership Director.

Standing Charge

  * Create a network of collections and conservation professionals committed
to the preventive care of collections. The network will support current AIC
members and work to encourage non-member collections care professionals to
become AIC members.
  * Advance the understanding that preventive care preserves our cultural
heritage in a way that post-damage, interventive treatment cannot restore.
  * Advocate for professional recognition of all collections care
professionals and support the development of the role they play in
institutional preservation planning.
  * Encourage collections and conservation professionals to exchange
preservation information, ideas, and research.
  * Provide preventive care programs and resources that will be of interest
to the broad spectrum of constituents the CCN intends to serve.
  * Network with related collections and conservation organizations to better
support shared goals.

[pestlist] Creation of an Collection Care Network - lend your support

Greetings! Whether preventive care tasks are a core or peripheral
responsibility in your particular job, they have a profound effect on
collections and overall preservation. Members of the American Institute for
Conservation are proposing the creation of Collection Care Network. This new
AIC Network would recognize the critical importance of preventive conservation
as the most effective means of promoting the long-term preservation of cultural
property. It would do so by:

 * providing resources to support collections care and conservation staff
 * creating awareness of preventive care
 * identifying and developing standards and best practices, training, and
other projects to advance preventive care in institutions of all types and
sizes, locally, nationally and globally
 * and working with related groups to reach and support key collections care
constituents
Preventive care activities often transcend materials and institutional type and
offer an excellent way to bring together people who work in varied ways with
collections (i.e. collection managers, registrars, conservators, mountmakers,
designers, technicians, etc.). If you are interested in supporting the creation
of a Collections Care Network or have thoughts on what you would like such a
group to do, we hope that you will take a look at the full proposal outlining
the Goals, Rationale, Anticipated groups to be served, and Ideas for Future
Projects. The proposal can be viewed on the AIC Blog at
http://www.conservators-converse.org/2011/09/ccn-proposal/
If you would like to support the proposal you may do so by submitting your name
and any affiliation in the comments box underneath the Blog post. Alternatively
you may email the AIC e-Editor at rachael at amartconservation dot com. Please
put CCN proposal in your subject line.

RE: [pestlist] Digest Mode

Daily would be best for me, I agree that many posts are time-sensitive, and we
frequently go weeks between flurries of interaction - so it would reduce what
we get to a more concise bundle, but not make someone with an emergency wait.
I do ask that we get the posts in the body of the digest email - rather than as
attachments.

Hello all -

I'm am setting up digest capabilities for this list. Digest mode (and it is
optional by user) will save the emails that have come in over a certain period
and then mail them to you all at once. If the period is set to one day, all
emails coming in that day would be sent to you at one time at the end of the
day.

I can set the digest period and the send time. Digest period options are:
daily, weekly, bi-weekly or monthly.

If you think you'd like to use the digest mode, please let me know which period
you would prefer - I can only set it to one.

Rose,
Our pest guy removes little lizards (live) from the traps using vegetable

Dear Pestlist:

A mishap in de-installation opened and attached the adhesive of a Victor roach
trap to a silk book cover. I know from personal experience that this adhesive
is quite sticky and difficult to remove from anything. Does anyone has
experience removing a sticky trap from a textile? If it was silk that is great
but other textiles would be enlightening as well. I will be performing mock-ups
and I can share the information with everyone on the website if you are
interested.

Thanks,
Rose

We are finding these in traps in one Historic House. Tick marks on the side are
.1 mm. Very tiny. Any suggestions as to who they might be?
Thank you,
