 Hello Again,

Nick and I also won 54 early 7 inch Berliner, Victor, Zonophone, and
Improved etched records at the auction. We know that some of these can be
valuable and know a little about them but would love an expert opinion on the
collection. Most of the records are Berliner Gramophone records with the
etched titles. About half of them are signed by the artist who sang the song
or conducted the band. There are some really nice titles like Yankee
Doodle and Blue Bells of Scotland. We also have several etched Zonophone
records, about 10 Improved records a few Victor without the dog and one
Victor
with the dog. Here are a few pics. We are interested in anything you can
tell us.

 Thanks again!

Re: [Phono-L] Dating Victor Exhibition Reproducers

2013-08-30 Thread Steven Medved
I have an early gold reproducer with the nuts that had a needle bar that looks
like they took a round hole and made a triangle out of it.

I tried this a few years ago and did not get any replies.

A few months ago. I purchased a late model Victor E, S/N 55114. There are
only 2 holes in the back of the case, so it was set up as a rear mount. I'm
guessing this machine is from 1904-5.The reproducer that came with the
machine is S/N 350479. This reproducer is original to the machine. The nickel
plating and aging are consistent with the rest of the machine. The needle bar
has the triangular hole for fiber needles. My guess that the reproducer was
upgraded after 1909 after the triangular fiber needles were introduced.
Originally, this reproducer would have had a round hole in the needle bar,
and round knurled nuts. This leads to several questions about the Victor
Exhibition reproducer. Is there a data chart with breakdowns of S/N's with
dates? When did Victor switch to the hex nuts, but still retained the round
hole? When did Victor use the spring loaded clamp, similar to the Columbia
analyzing reproducer? When did Victor start using suffixes, like A
after the S/N on their reproducers? Thanks in advance for any information on
 this.

Re: [Phono-L] Looking for Cut Cornered Decca Storage Album

Have you tried Howard Hope in the UK? Just Google his name and something should

 Hello Phello Phono Pholk,

I'm on the hunt for a rare Decca 78 storage album that is actually part of a
Decca portable phonograph (perhaps I should say gramophone as this is a UK
machine though it was bought in Virginia).

These albums, like those made for the Columbia UK portables, were designed
to store under the upper lids of their gramophones (see the attached photo
of a Columbia Viva-tonal 202). The albums had their spines at the bottom
of the book (rather than on the left) and had their top corners cut not to
save on expense - but to allow fingers plenty of access to insert and pull
the albums out from storage. They had a very interesting accordion-like
design that reduced stress on the sleeves at the spine, allowing you to flip
pages with less chance of snapping your shellac. (Save that for your
 Chiropractor.)

Over the years many were separated from their machines, especially as these
albums continued to find use in the electric age vs the rest of the machine..
That said, these are rare, so in addition to my investigations overseas, I
thought I'd ask if anyone here might have a suggestion on where to find one
in this country it at all? I suspect record buyers might come upon these
more than machine buyers, but that's just a theory.

If you happen to have one housing a stack of shellac or know someone who
might have one, kindly drop me a line.

 Best to all,

 Arvin in MA

Re: [Phono-L] Looking for Cut Cornered Decca Storage Album

2013-08-30 Thread Arvin Casas
Thanks for your suggestion! Howard expressed to me in the past that he's
not interested in supporting the mid-range machines so I try not to bother
him anymore. I've reached out to a few other sellers I know in the UK and
will probably try the Netherlands and Germany too, just to widen the
search.

A good idea though. Sadly a storage record album isn't quite an EMG or
HMV Lumiere, haha.

Many thanks,

Arvin
