Subject: [Phono-L] Edison Triumph A 2/4 minute conversion kit?

Hello Everyone,

I was wondering if there are any printed or "known" specifications for
the fabrication dimensions of all of the different Edison reproducer
"S" or "C" hooks that connect the diaphragm to the stylus? Like
actual center to center distance, radius on the ends, wire diameter,
etc. Any info would be helpful as I would like to machine a few small
fixtures to make them instead of trial and error.

Thanks,
Jim Reisenweber

Are there any facts available on that? Do they appear in any catalogs?

Amberol and Blue Amberol.

Re: [Phono-L] ebay fraudlent seller

2012-05-01 Thread Darrell Lehman
I lost out on $500 'cause I didn't cash a phony $2800 M.O. He was going
to let me keep that (in addition to the $300 for the item) after I
mailed the extra $2000 to his son.

It was well done - the M.O. was drawn on a national bank. But having
STEPPED off the turnip truck I Googled the bank - they had branch only
two blocks away from the one the M.O. was from - Why so close? I asked
myself.

So I called their 1-800 #. I gave them the account number - I didn't
even finish before they told me it was a phony. The interesting part
was they didn't want a copy or have anything to do with it - great attitude!

Google's great - I also Googled the phone number of the bank on the
phony M.O. - it came up associated with three other numbers. I called
all four. They were businesses who had no knowledge of the individual
but had similar inquiries - they assumed the phone company had listed
the number wrong.

And all you have to do is let the buyer know you'll hold the stuff for a
week or two for the MO to clear. They'll either agree or go away.

Re: [Phono-L] Fraud Artists and Crooks descend on Craigslist

2011-10-22 Thread Darrell Lehman
But it's so much fun dialoguing with these guys. Their grammar...
grammer... gramma... and syntax is so poor it's almost stand-up.

Glean what you can from my experience

I corresponded with a buyer and received a $3000 CASHIER'S CHECK via
Overnight UPS for a $300 set of tools I listed on Craig's List. I was
s'posed to cash, keep $500 for the tools and my trouble and wire the
$2500 to the guy's son in a third city. I already had some red flags
up high so I Googled the bank. There was a branch of that bank in that
town on that street but three blocks away - strange...

So I Googled the bank's phone number on the check. It was a good number
and was associated with three other numbers. I called all four numbers
- one was an insurance agency, one a drug store and two private
residences. All had rec'd a couple calls like mine and all four blamed
the phone company for publishing the wrong number for the bank.

It was interesting stringing him along for 4-5 days. He finally said if
I didn't send the $ immediately, call the police he would. I told him
to do so and never heard from him again. I still have the check should
the bank ever get an account with that number...

The interesting part is I called the 1-800 for the bank and read them
the account number. Before I even finished with the numbers they
announced it was a bad account number. After I explained what was going
on they weren't interested is seeing the check or pursuing the matter.
I guess they encounter too much to get involved.

If the deal is too good to be true.

But personally I follow-up every contact regardless of what they write
or don't write; I never send a phone number and I often ask availability
- some stuff sells fast so why waste time with questions about s/n,
condition, etc?

is to grasp the mandrel with rubber gloved hands and twist it back and forth
until it comes off the shaft. This can take some time. Once that is done, the
shaft must be removed. Remove all the screws etc that attach the shaft to the
feedscrew and pulley. Wrap the feedscrew well in a soft cloth, such as a
washcloth.
Get a piece of rubber with some decent thickness, such as gasket rubber (sold in small
sheets at auto parts stores) or any piece of rubber that is at least 1/8 or so and
maybe 1 square. Wrap the rubber around the mandrel shaft in the middle of the area
where the mandrel would sit.In the middle of the mandrel shaft. Clamp a pair of locking
pliers onto the rubber so as not to mar the shaft. Work the pliers back and forth,
carefully turning the mandrel shaft and working it out to the right. It helps to have
someone hold the machine as you do this. With care, work the mandrel shaft until it comes
out of the bearing. Be very careful not to bend it. Once it is almost out, have your
helper grasp the feedscrew so it doesn't just fall off when the shaft comes out.
With the shaft out,get a coping saw, stick the blade through the hole in the
bearing and connect it to the saw frame. Cut the bearing through to the casting
in two places. Once that is done, use a small screwdriver or a hinge pin and
gently tap the bearing until it comes out. Making the two saw cuts will ease
the pressure and allow the bearing to come out. Be careful when tapping it out
- I once broke a casting that way! but I have since been successful in removing
frozen bearings in this way.
When replacing the mandrel, you may or may not need to epoxy it back onto the
shaft - I have had some mandrels with enough friction to keep them on without
gluing, and one where it needed to be glued.

Here is another issue I am dealing with again. Who has the best idea for
freeing up a frozen bearing on an Edison Home Model D without messing up the
mandrel, the mandrel shaft, gearing, etc.? I have asked this before, and have
received all sorts of answers--from heating with a blow torch to freezing in
the freezer. I have a tough one right now that I don't want to mess up. How
about it friends? Who can come up with the best way to get that bearing out?
Thanks for any suggestions!

[Phono-L] Ada Jones Collection For Sale

2011-06-21 Thread Darrell Lehman
Professor Milford Fargo (of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester,
New York) was so fascinated when he first heard Ada Jones on records,
that he spent the last 45 years of his life collecting her records and
researching her life. (The latter wasn't easy. She was born in
England. Her parents brought her here when she was a child. She died
waaay too young at the age of 48 in 1922.) Despite this level of
obscurity, Milford was as tenacious as anybody could be. Through hard
work, he obtained a copy of her birth certificate and a photo of the pub
where she was born in an upstairs apartment! He was told that her
widower had died in the '40s. But he tracked the man down and
interviewed him extensively in 1960!
There are approx. 2,212 discs, about half of which were first copies.
The rest were duplicates (there are about ten copies of When Francis
Dances With Me!). The collection does include the Diamond Discs,
Pathes and other vertical cut discs.

Bonus for Ada fans who are also label collectors: This collection
includes some awesomely rare labels, including McKinley, Excelsior,
Central, Clico, Eagle and Faultless. (In some cases, the labels are so
rare that only one specimen is actually in the collecton, although his
photocopied discography lists all known numbers that were issued, with
his notations reflecting whether he had the discs himself or not.)

Additional icing on the cake: The sale price includes all of Milford's
correspondence re: Ada Jones, early photocopies, i.e., the early
photocopy system, of 1890s sheet music with Ada either pictured or
credited on the cover, and two 7-inch reels of tape containing his
interviews with Ada's widower, Hughie Flaherty!

Asking $5,000.00 for this one-of-a-kind collection and, given its size,
the buyer would have to make arrangements to pick it up in New York.

I like the AN's ruggedness and design, and I remember Doug Anderson's very well (he was
justifiably proud of it), but it was a somewhat difficult machine in many ways. One day I would like
to find an early Decca trench model reflector machine, one actually from 1914-18, which was
a more truly portable unit that saw considerable use in France. I have a later 20s Decca Jr, which is
much smaller than the earlier trench models but surprisingly efficient tonally, and even
the Jr remained in use by the British forces into the 20s and 30s. The 1926 film _The Flag Lieutenant_
with Henry Edwards shows one being used on a Royal Navy vessel. PC

Ugly and clunkyness of the A N, was part of the beauty of the History of it. It was
never intended to be put on display in your living room (Quite a frightening thought), but
rather designed to be rugged, and dependable and useful for the boys in the battlefield to
lug it around and play records around the campfire. Edison designed it for one purpose in
mind. and that was doing his patriotic best, to design a machine that would be functional
and hold up under unusual conditions and circumstances. If you are not into the colorful
history of Edison, World War I, and the Edison AN, it would be a certain mistake to
buy one . I gave a lecture about a month ago at a Local Historical Society, on Edison's
Phonographs and Diamond Disc Records, and took along my Edison Army Navy Machine, I set up
early and kept it covered until the final selection of the evening, which was Let us not
forget played on the Edison Army Navy Machine. I told the story of the creation of the
Edison A

  N

machine and the Let Us Not Forget Record, and then unveiled the machine. The
crowd of History buffs were absolutely fascinated by it and ran up to take
digitals as it played LUNF . Sharing that machine and record and the history
behind both of them with this highly receptive crowd will always be one of the
highlights from my years of collecting.

Availability Notes

Each full episode of Auction Hunters is posted on Spike.com three days
after its premiere. After one full week of availability they are taken
down, and posted again 30 days after the original premiere for you to
watch indefinitely.

They were at the house for 4 hours to use a eight minute clip. We have been
on TV many times over the years. It doesn't pay and we see little in
increased business. We do it to promote the hobby. Any chance we get to
expose phonographs to a national audience, we take it. We also were filmed
for another new show recently which stars Ty Pennington of Extreme Home
Makeover. It may air this summer. I kind of doubt the show will fly. They
blew off some real antiques and got excited over a kids Dodgers bobble head
collection that dated way back to 2006! My wife and I have done school
assemblies as well. I believe that we all must do what we can to expose
phonographs to a younger generation if we are to keep this hobby alive in
years to come.
If anyone wants to see The old man (me) on the show, you can view it
online. Google AUCTION HUNTERS and I think it is Season 3 episode 2 (or is
it season 2, episode 3?) The show also featured a second storage unit with a
small speed boat if that helps. If you have cable (we don't) it airs often
on the SPIKE channel.

As a side note, I purchased some phonographs from a guy a few years ago who
bought storage units like the show and he said the strangest thing he ever
found were two dead bodies that were in a box that was sealed in layers of
heavy plastic tarps. Some Asian guy killed these people and forgot to pay
for his unit. The killer left the country and might have gotten away with
it, but he sent a check to the storage unit people from the country he was
in. The local police arrested him and he was soon executed.

I think I'll stick to phonographs.

Some of these enhancements were done in the early 50s, and during the

depression to improve mail order saleability of used phonos. To tell what

Re: [Phono-L] Decorated Gem

2011-04-10 Thread Darrell Lehman
The TOLE painting took a toll on everybody who's stuck with it now! Much
like the guilt he felt over the gilt!!!

By the way, what is toll painting?
In the 50's-60's - toll painting took a toll on your health, because paint
contained lead. :)

Re: [Phono-L] ITG Arrives in Oregon

2010-08-27 Thread Darrell Lehman
Oops! This was s'posed to go to my good friend Dan only - sorry to
'sturb y'all

And no I didn't miss the message about ITG not arriving as it should?
Nor I miss the three individual reports of its arrival in Oregon - which
seems redundant since 80% of the population probably doesn't know where
Ore-ee-gone is!

And if you're reporting you didn't get your cell phone bill, I can
forward mine for you to pay.

Re: [Phono-L] union

2010-06-12 Thread Darrell Lehman
These folks have spent 30+ years building Union from a couple circus
tents to what it is today. They've served the sellers magnificently and
have every right to preserve the integrity of the show for the buyers.
To start something extra the day before the main event is selfish,
greedy AND unethical! And ANYONE who does so should be blackballed by
the Donley's as well as by sellers and buyers!! If another show is
needed, do it the week-end before or after and let the public decide -
don't rip-off somebody elses efforts.

bruce78...@comcast.net wrote:

So it appears these folks want to be the only game in town? and are
blackballing anyone who dares to start there own little trading and selling
station, even when it is seperate and apart from their own operation ? That is
highly unethical and down right arrogant. Of course this could merely be one of
those rumors that gets going, based solely on hear say, and snowballs out of
sight. So let's get all of the facts before we all jump on this.

That{But if they are at the Hess Gas Station down the Street, or have
rented some space at some ball field, then what's the problem ??
Certainly nothing wrong with that. Why should someone claim a monopoly
on the whole area just based on tradition.} was the question raised the
last time as I remember.

If you remember back several years there used to be an auction on
Thursday night and this issue did not really surface until the auction
went away.

There has been an issue with trading in the parking lot on the Thursday
before the show in the past. That has expanded to exhibitors trading
just about anywhere on Thursday if its officially organized.

I am reasonably certain that there will be more info flowing forth on
this topic.

[Phono-L] Cylinders For Sale

2010-05-17 Thread Darrell Lehman
If anybody's interested in 640 UNPICKED Blue Amberols ($2500 for the
lot), let me know. For a small fee they can be delivered to Union - but
need to know this week.

Lots of Billy Murray, Uncle Josh, Collins Harlan and other comedy.
Some bands, dance bands, instrumentals and the usual vocals. Eyeballed
maybe 20% - all looked very nice!
