Like actual center to center distance, radius on the ends, wire diameter, etc. Any info would be helpful as I would like to machine a few small fixtures to make them instead of trial and error. I lost out on $500 'cause I didn't cash a phony $2800 M.O. He was going to let me keep that (in addition to the $300 for the item) after I mailed the extra $2000 to his son. It was well done - the M.O. was drawn on a national bank. But having STEPPED off the turnip truck I Googled the bank - they had branch only two blocks away from the one the M.O. was from - Why so close? I asked myself. So I called their 1-800 #. I gave them the account number - I didn't even finish before they told me it was a phony. The interesting part was they didn't want a copy or have anything to do with it - great attitude! Google's great - I also Googled the phone number of the bank on the phony M.O. - it came up associated with three other numbers. I called all four. They were businesses who had no knowledge of the individual but had similar inquiries - they assumed the phone company had listed the number wrong. And all you have to do is let the buyer know you'll hold the stuff for a week or two for the MO to clear. They'll either agree or go away. best, Darrell == Rich wrote: If you request a USPS money order you can go to the post office and actually check that the MO is valid and not a phony. There is a huge amount of scamming on Craigslist involving people who claim to be interested in your item and who want to pay by cashier's check or money order. These money orders and cashier's checks are stolen from banks and are altered. Craigslist has a warning about this and about accepting those types of payment. When yuo get them and you send the item off, you find out that the money order or cashier's check is no good and you are stuck. So the seller was probably afraid that this was one of those scams. They are so widespread on Craigslist that I get several offers when I am selling something there. They always begin with a note from the would-be buyer asking if the item is still available. Over the past 10-12 years I've mailed over 7000 packages - two have gotten lost. And until the past 2-3 years almost all were paid for by check. Only two bounced and both made them good immediately. Re: [Phono-L] Fraud Artists and Crooks descend on Craigslist
But it's so much fun dialoguing with these guys. Their grammar... grammer... gramma... and syntax is so poor it's almost stand-up. Glean what you can from my experience I corresponded with a buyer and received a $3000 CASHIER'S CHECK via Overnight UPS for a $300 set of tools I listed on Craig's List. I was s'posed to cash, keep $500 for the tools and my trouble and wire the $2500 to the guy's son in a third city. I already had some red flags up high so I Googled the bank. There was a branch of that bank in that town on that street but three blocks away - strange... So I Googled the bank's phone number on the check. It was a good number and was associated with three other numbers. I called all four numbers - one was an insurance agency, one a drug store and two private residences. All had rec'd a couple calls like mine and all four blamed the phone company for publishing the wrong number for the bank. It was interesting stringing him along for 4-5 days. He finally said if I didn't send the $ immediately, call the police he would. I told him to do so and never heard from him again. I still have the check should the bank ever get an account with that number... The interesting part is I called the 1-800 for the bank and read them the account number. Before I even finished with the numbers they announced it was a bad account number. After I explained what was going on they weren't interested is seeing the check or pursuing the matter. I guess they encounter too much to get involved. If the deal is too good to be true. But personally I follow-up every contact regardless of what they write or don't write; I never send a phone number and I often ask availability - some stuff sells fast so why waste time with questions about s/n, condition, etc? = Rich wrote: There are a million solutions to that problem. What I'd like to hear is if anyone's got an idea of how to get the mandrel/shaft out WITHOUT taking the mandrel off the shaft... ? I use a bolt with a bunch of several appropriate sized washers to pull the old bearing out - saves the casting. === john robles wrote: Hi Mike Have you removed the mandrel and shaft yet? That is pretty much mandatory.. The way I did it (and there may be better ways, this is the way I learned to do it) is to grasp the mandrel with rubber gloved hands and twist it back and forth until it comes off the shaft. This can take some time. Once that is done, the shaft must be removed. Remove all the screws etc that attach the shaft to the feedscrew and pulley. Wrap the feedscrew well in a soft cloth, such as a washcloth. Get a piece of rubber with some decent thickness, such as gasket rubber (sold in small sheets at auto parts stores) or any piece of rubber that is at least 1/8 or so and maybe 1 square. Wrap the rubber around the mandrel shaft in the middle of the area where the mandrel would sit.In the middle of the mandrel shaft. Clamp a pair of locking pliers onto the rubber so as not to mar the shaft. Work the pliers back and forth, carefully turning the mandrel shaft and working it out to the right. It helps to have someone hold the machine as you do this. With care, work the mandrel shaft until it comes out of the bearing. Be very careful not to bend it. Once it is almost out, have your helper grasp the feedscrew so it doesn't just fall off when the shaft comes out. With the shaft out,get a coping saw, stick the blade through the hole in the bearing and connect it to the saw frame. Cut the bearing through to the casting in two places. Once that is done, use a small screwdriver or a hinge pin and gently tap the bearing until it comes out. Making the two saw cuts will ease the pressure and allow the bearing to come out. Be careful when tapping it out - I once broke a casting that way! but I have since been successful in removing frozen bearings in this way. When replacing the mandrel, you may or may not need to epoxy it back onto the shaft - I have had some mandrels with enough friction to keep them on without gluing, and one where it needed to be glued. --- On Tue, 7/5/11, mdsor...@aol.commdsor...@aol.com wrote: From: mdsor...@aol.commdsor...@aol.com Subject: [Phono-L] frozen Edison Home pot metal bearing To: phono-l@oldcrank.org Date: Tuesday, July 5, 2011, 11:15 PM Here is another issue I am dealing with again. [Phono-L] Ada Jones Collection For Sale
Professor Milford Fargo (of the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York) was so fascinated when he first heard Ada Jones on records, that he spent the last 45 years of his life collecting her records and researching her life. (The latter wasn't easy. She was born in England. Her parents brought her here when she was a child. She died waaay too young at the age of 48 in 1922.) Despite this level of obscurity, Milford was as tenacious as anybody could be. Through hard work, he obtained a copy of her birth certificate and a photo of the pub where she was born in an upstairs apartment! He was told that her widower had died in the '40s. But he tracked the man down and interviewed him extensively in 1960! There are approx. 2,212 discs, about half of which were first copies. The rest were duplicates (there are about ten copies of When Francis Dances With Me!). The collection does include the Diamond Discs, Pathes and other vertical cut discs. Bonus for Ada fans who are also label collectors: This collection includes some awesomely rare labels, including McKinley, Excelsior, Central, Clico, Eagle and Faultless. (In some cases, the labels are so rare that only one specimen is actually in the collecton, although his photocopied discography lists all known numbers that were issued, with his notations reflecting whether he had the discs himself or not.) Additional icing on the cake: The sale price includes all of Milford's correspondence re: Ada Jones, early photocopies, i.e., the early photocopy system, of 1890s sheet music with Ada either pictured or credited on the cover, and two 7-inch reels of tape containing his interviews with Ada's widower, Hughie Flaherty! Asking $5,000.00 for this one-of-a-kind collection and, given its size, the buyer would have to make arrangements to pick it up in New York.
