[Phono-L] This makes my mouth water

2009-05-10 Thread c5...@aol.com
I have only had about 3 e-mail contacts with Phono-L in the last 6 days.
There is usually a lot more contacts. Is it up and running or is it me?
Thanks

Hi
My Vic III sold on ebay. To a guy in China. That sort of scared me, and he only
has 11 feedback ratings, but I read every one and they are all for phonograph
related items, and they are all very good ratings, a couple by people I know.
So I assume he is ok. I just keep thinking of all those crapophones on ebay
that come from China..and all those purported antiques..scary. But he seems
ok.

I no longer buy from ebay. I am Phonofreak56 and I have over 1600 pos.
feed-backs. I got booted off ebay(no great loss) because I refused to pay by
pay pal. Here's what happened: There were 2 newbie sellers that didn't mention
pay pal only or required. I win the items and immediately ask the sellers for
their address so I can send payment. No response came to me. A few days later,
I get an email asking why I haven't paid. I respond that I need an address so I
can mail payment, and pay pal only or required was not stated. A few days pass
and I get two strikes for non payment. I sent an email saying that pay pal was
not mentioned in the auctions. I get a canned answer from someone who doesn't
know English. My question was skirted and avoided. The straw that broke the
camel's back went like this. I won a really nice VV50 with a 3 digit serial
number. I paid for the item and had it in my possession. Then I get a third
strike and booted off. Like before, I
emailed ebay and the typical response like before. The buyers have no rights
and it sucks being at the mercy of an unscrupulous seller. They will take the
word of a newbie with 20 pos. feed-backs over some one with over 1600. Go
figure. Now I buy from fellow collectors and from shows. F**K ebay. I have no
use for it. I notice that ITG classified are getting bigger before the ebay
craze. Thanks guys for allowing me to sound off. Harvey Kravitz, Phonofreak56

Hi,
The tag on the front appears to be a celluloid tag from the Chicago
dealer of LYON HEALEY. They would replace the factory tag with their tag
(No doubt for advertising) and place the original tag inside since their tag
had no model # or serial #.

I met Shawn Borri at the MME show in New Jersey a few years back. I traded
him and his partner a shaving machine in exchange for eight cylinders. I
received two cylinders at the show and he was going to make the rest when he
got home. I gave him the shaver at the show. This was several years ago.
I never did receive the cylinders. I have e-mailed him several times since
and he has e-mailed me back stating he would send the cylinders as recently
as a year ago. I have never received them and have since given up.
Obviously I would not do business with him again.

Greetings Rob:

That is the third time that put together machine has been auctioned on eBay.
Something is wrong somewhere. The cabinet is correct for a late Edison coin
op but the bedplate has holes for a spring motor which were not drilled for
the electric coin machines. The Triumph Model B topworks with the latchgate is
correct for 1906 cabinet but since you are not shown the topworks in detail
you cannot see if the mandrel shaft drive pulley was the larger diameter or the
normal size as would be found on the spring driven Triumph. The AC/DC motor
is from much later and would never have been found on this date machine. The
trip arm is home made at best and not original. That is the tip of the iceberg.

Lastly this machine was on eBay earlier this year. If my memory serves it
once sold as a Buy It Now of $7,500.

A one day auction on eBay for a rarity is usually to pull in the neophytes
who then don't have the time to research authenticity and value.

Regards to all on the list,

Al

Ok, resident Edison nuts, I saw something a bit puzzling last night. We
had a speaker at our historical society talk about the 4 amusement parks in
East Providence RI. He used post card views mostly and on one of them of
Crescent Park, from the early 1900s, there was a building marked Edisonia.
I thought it might be for movies but cylinder phono exhibition is another
possibility. Anyone ever read/seen a description of an exhibit marked
Edisonia and what was in it?

Thanks,

then, I have an affection for times when the truly stupid (i.e., too lazy
 to
think, not incapable of thinking) get poked fun at right to their faces

still they don't realize it (i.e., the second question posted to the
 seller).

Was this one of you guys?

 still lol,

Wonderful to think of this as your daily driver.

Automotive CD player technology has improved over the years. The
older ones did have a tendency to skip more than what came later.
You might want to try again if it's been a long time since the first
attempt. If the road is rough enough, the new ones can skip as
 well.

[Phono-L] Phonograph toy

2007-03-23 Thread c5...@aol.com
I know Charlie Wetherbee made some of these, so I don't know if it was
original. He is the one that does the reproductions. He rarely displays them
because of what they are. But if you ask him, he usually has a few.

From the underside shots, it's obvious that the piece is a reproduction - no
doubt one of Charlie Weatherbie's Naughty Toys as he calls them. Charlie
includes a little attached bedspread which flies around during the action. Well
fellas, there's the price of ignorance... Charlie sells them for about 30 bucks!

  Hi group,
I have been watching a phonograph toy that I have never seen before. This
very riske' toy just sold. And what an interesting sale. Only one bidder.
But he really wanted it. This couple seems of indeterminate age and could be
a recent reproduction. But it is in no reference books that I have seen--
perhaps because authors have been too embarrassed to include it in their
picture books.
Has anyone ever seen this before? Could it be very old? I just can't be
sure.

Check out eBay #320093801486 Then check out the bid history

Thanks, Art Heller

Thanks George,
That makes sense. I thought it might be a Weatherbee repro. I'm glad I
didn't bid on it. He does nice repros but not for $445!! All eBay needs is
one
buyer who is nuts for an item. He bid it up to the reserve and wasn't going
to go home without it!

At Lincoln Land Community college in Springfield, IL we have established a
program on WW1 this May. One of the talks will be on the music on WW1. I
thought I had some postcards of soldiers listening to phonographs but cannot
find any of them. I am asking if anyone can send me scans of any photos or
postcards of WW1 soldiers listening to phonographs. Any images will be
appreciated... (This is going to be a great educational offering for our
students to appreciate what it was like in WW1. Plans are also in place to
build a trench)

Please send scans to suellen.f...@llcc.edu

Thank you in advance for your help!

Something might be goofy with the Johnson A that is on right now. The
listing is the same as one listed about a year ago, pictures and all. I
have emailed the seller for more information and pictures and I received an
email back saying he can't email more pictures. The Ebay ID is from Alabama
I believe, the seller emailed me that the phonograph is in Miami. When
asked if it could be picked up and paid for in cash if I was that highest
bidder there was no reply. Sounds fishy to me. Also, I was informed from
another person familiar when it was listed before that it had a pretty high
reserve on it. There is no reserve now.
