of the Grants for Preservation of Classical Music Historical Recordings. The
program for this grant was founded in 2004 by Al Schlachtmeyer and the ARSC
Board of Directors, to encourage and support the preservation of
historically significant sound recordings of Western Art Music by
individuals and organizations.

-- Interlochen Public Radio --
Interlochen Public Radio received a $9000 grant to hire an archival intern
to assist with a project to digitize open-reel recordings of performances at
the Interlochen Academy of the Arts. The tapes, recorded between 1954 and
1991, include performances by Van Cliburn, Claudette Sorel, William
Doppmann, and Janos Starker. Frederick Fennell and Howard Hanson are among
the conductors of the performances. The recordings include at least two
American premieres of note: Bartok's "The Wooden Prince" and Sibelius' "The
Captive Queen, Opus 48." The digital recordings made from the tapes will be
available for broadcast over Interlochen Public Radio. They will also be
available to the public via streaming, as copyright permits.

-- Professor Jordi Roquer Gonzalez --
Piano rolls are an early and popular form of recording technology. To
support the playback and recording of piano rolls cut by Catalan composers
Federico Mompou and Manuel Blancafort between 1914 and 1929, Professor Jordi
Roquer Gonzalez, of the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain, received a

slightly different focus.

-- Ian Eagleson --
Ian Eagleson, an ethnomusicologist and independent scholar, received a $1000
grant for travel to study the recording industry in Kenya. He will do
historical research on Kenyan popular music and the recording industry
during the middle to late twentieth century. Eagleson will conduct oral
history interviews and discographic research with musicians/producers who
came to the forefront of this activity during the 1960s, including Gabriel
Omolo, David Amunga, and John Nzenze. This project will supplement
preparation of a book manuscript, "Ok Oyot System: Benga and the Kenyan
Recording Industry from 1950-2015," which documents guitar-based benga music
and the history of Kenyan recording practices. In addition, Eagleson will
visit the British Library Sound Archive to examine the work of Alice Werner,
who recorded Kenyan songs and language in 1912, on wax cylinders.

-- Filip Sir --
Filip Sir, librarian and sound specialist at the Moravian Library in Prague,
Czech Republic, received $1000 for travel to U.S. repositories to collect
information on recordings made for Czech immigrants to the U.S. The main
purpose of this research project is to examine and describe the production
of sound recordings for Czech-speaking immigrants in the U.S. during the
first half of the 20th century. He plans to visit the University of Chicago,
University of Wisconsin, and the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library in
Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The results of this research will help to create a
publication that includes: a discography of Czech records for immigrants in
the U.S.; stories of the Czech countrymen in the U.S. who made them; and
pictures of record labels. A short article focusing on this research will be
published in the ARSC Journal.

-- Matt Swiatlowski --
Matt Swiatlowski, a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina,

The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- NOMINATIONS for the 2017 ARSC AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE ---

You are invited to propose candidates for the 2017 ARSC Awards for
Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research. Nominations may be made by
anyone, ARSC member or not. The deadline for nominations is December 31,
2016.

Eligible publications include any original work -- book, monograph, article,
liner notes, conference proceedings, or electronically-published materials
-- first published during 2016. The work may treat any subject related to
recorded sound, but must embody the highest research standards. It should
deal primarily with historical subjects, pertaining to periods at least ten
years prior to the year of publication, with the exception of works related
to modern preservation or playback technology.

The ARSC Awards typically recognize histories, discographies, or biographies
representing the "Best Research" in these recording genres: Blues or Gospel
Music; Classical Music; Country Music; Folk or Ethnic Music; Jazz; Popular

inventory a stored collection, rescuing recordings from danger, copying
recordings from endangered or unstable media, etc.

-- Projects promoting public access to recordings.

-- Projects involving commercial as well as private, instantaneous
recordings.

-- Projects involving collections anywhere in the world. (Non-U.S.
applicants are encouraged to apply.)

a member of the ARSC Technical Committee, and an expert on classical music.

Grant amounts generally range from $2,000 to $10,000. Grant projects should
be completed within 24 months. Written notification of decisions on projects

(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- ARSC PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS 2017 ---

This year, ARSC is offering two pre-conference workshops on Wednesday, May
10, at the Menger Hotel.

ANALOG TAPE PLAYBACK (Sponsor: ARSC Technical Committee)
This workshop is designed to familiarize attendees with best practices
regarding audiotape handling, identification, and playback. After an
historical overview of the medium, experienced engineers will guide you
through the processes of inspecting and playing back reel-to-reel and
cassette audiotape for reformatting or monitoring purposes. You will then
get to handle and play back several tapes, and learn about their
preservation issues. Scheduled presenters are Seth Winner, George Blood,
Dennis Rooney, Brad McCoy, and Marcos Sueiro. The workshop will be held from
9 a.m. to noon, and is limited to 20 attendees. Pre-registration is
required.

DIGITAL AUDIO RESTORATION (Sponsor: ARSC Education & Training Committee)
This workshop will focus on the basics of audio restoration and repair using
Izotope RX. The workshop will be divided into two parts. The first hour will
cover basic theory, concepts, and tools used for audio restoration. The
remaining 90 minutes will focus on practical application of audio
restoration and repair. While this workshop uses Izotope RX, the information
and techniques presented will be applicable to any software-based
restoration and repair tool. The presenter is Konrad Strauss. This workshop
will be held from 2 p.m.to 5 p.m., and is limited to 50 attendees. On-site
registration is allowed, space permitting.

Separate registration fees apply for the workshops. Please register by April
17 to receive the early registration discount.

[Phono-L] ARSC Conference 2019: Call for Presentations

2018-10-11 Thread Bill Klinger via Phono-L
The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- 2019 ARSC CONFERENCE: CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS --- Proposal deadline:
January 4, 2019

The Association for Recorded Sound Collections invites proposals for
presentations, papers, posters, and panels on any aspect of sound recording
at its 53rd annual conference, to be held May 8-11, 2019 at the historic
Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon.

In recognition of our host city, Portland, we especially encourage
presentations that highlight the contributions of composers, broadcasters,
musicians, performers, record labels, studios, songwriters, and
personalities in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States.

In addition, the program committee invites proposals pertaining to:
-- Discographies, record-label or artist histories, and the life and times
of lesser known formats.
-- Documenting watershed historical moments -- in recorded-sound history or
via recorded sound.
-- Innovative research, preservation and access projects, community-based
archiving initiatives, digital humanities, cultural approaches to sound
recordings, soundscapes, etc.
-- The challenges of born-digital materials and emerging sound-recording
formats and genres (collecting, producing, promoting, archiving, and
curating).
-- Advances in audio production and preservation tools, and techniques for
legacy and digital formats.
-- Advancements in audio preservation techniques for physical media, from
cylinder to DAT.

We seek papers and panels that are informative, display a passion for their
subjects, and include compelling audiovisual content. Share your special
interests with our engaged community of collectors, historians, musicians,
preservationists, archivists, and audio engineers.

With regret and acknowledged irony, we note our inability to provide
playback equipment for dead media, including (but not limited to) disc,
tape, cassette, videodisc, or videotape formats, as well as overheads, 35mm
slides, or other transparencies. However, we welcome demonstrations of
historic audio equipment provided and operated by presenters.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES

The deadline for presentation proposals is January 4, 2019. Receipt will be
acknowledged by e-mail. Presenters will be notified of acceptance
approximately one month thereafter.

You may submit your proposal using this form:
https://goo.gl/forms/bpUiNiw7uZpQQB3h2

IMPORTANT: Presenters must register and pay for the conference. Presenters
grant ARSC the right to record and distribute their conference
presentations, including PowerPoints or other slide shows, unless they
specify otherwise in writing.

2019-11-13 Thread Bill Klinger via Phono-L
The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- NOMINATIONS for the 2020 ARSC AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE ---

You are invited to propose candidates for the 2020 ARSC Awards for
Excellence in Historical Recorded Sound Research. Nominations may be made by
anyone, ARSC member or not. The deadline for nominations is December 31,
2019.

Eligible publications include any original work -- book, monograph, article,
liner notes, conference proceedings, or electronically-published materials
-- first published during 2019. The work may treat any subject related to
recorded sound, but must embody the highest research standards. It should
deal primarily with historical subjects, pertaining to periods at least ten
years prior to the year of publication.

The ARSC Awards typically recognize histories, discographies, or biographies
representing the "Best Research" in these recording genres: Blues, Gospel,
R, and Hip-Hop; Classical Music; Country, Folk, or Ethnic Music; Jazz; and
Rock and Popular Music. Additional categories include: Record Labels,
Manufacturers, or Phonographs; and General Research on the History of
Recorded Sound or Preservation or Reproduction of Recordings.

The Awards Committee especially welcomes information concerning eligible
journal articles, as well as foreign and small-press publications that might
otherwise be overlooked.

The ARSC Award for Distinguished Service to Historical Recordings honors a
person who has made outstanding contributions to the field in forms other

programs or projects, engineering skills, and editorial and publishing
activity.

any time.

[Phono-L] ARSC Preservation Grants 2020 -- Deadline Reminder

2019-12-02 Thread Bill Klinger via Phono-L
The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- ARSC PRESERVATION GRANTS PROGRAM ---
Deadline approaching for receipt of applications: December 16, 2019

The ARSC Program for the Preservation of Classical Music Historical
Recordings was founded by Al Schlachtmeyer and the ARSC Board of Directors
to encourage and support the preservation of historically significant sound
recordings of Western Art Music by individuals and organizations. (This
program is separate from the ARSC Research Grants Program, which supports
scholarship and publication in the fields of sound recording research and
audio preservation.)

The ARSC Program for the Preservation of Classical Music Historical
Recordings will consider funding:

-- Projects involving preservation, in any valid and reasonable fashion,
such as providing a collection with proper climate control, moving a
collection to facilities with proper storage conditions, re-sleeving a
collection of discs, setting up a volunteer project to organize and
inventory a stored collection, rescuing recordings from danger, copying
recordings from endangered or unstable media, etc.

-- Projects promoting public access to recordings.

-- Projects involving commercial as well as private, instantaneous
recordings.

-- Projects involving collections anywhere in the world. (Non-U.S.
applicants are encouraged to apply.)

The program is administered by an ARSC Grants Committee including the chair,
a member of the ARSC Technical Committee, and an expert on classical music.

Grant amounts generally range from $2,000 to $10,000. Grant projects should
be completed within 24 months. Written notification of decisions on projects
will be made approximately three months after the submission deadline.

Applications may be sent as an e-mail attachment to arscgra...@aol.com

Applications should be Word documents in Normal formatting, 12-point font,
with accompanying letters and other materials scanned into PDF files.

Grant applications must be received by December 16, 2019.

[Phono-L] ARSC Research Grants Program 2020

2019-10-17 Thread Bill Klinger via Phono-L
The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- ARSC RESEARCH GRANTS PROGRAM ---
--- APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 29, 2020 ---

The ARSC Research Grants Program supports scholarship and publication in the
fields of sound recording research and audio preservation. (This program is
separate from the ARSC Preservation Grants Program, which encourages and
supports the preservation of historically significant sound recordings of
Western Art Music.) Project categories eligible for consideration include:
discography, bibliography, historical studies of the sound recording
industry and its products, and any other subject likely to increase the
public's understanding and appreciation of the lasting importance of
recorded sound. ARSC encourages applications from individuals whose research
forms part of an academic program at the master's or doctoral level.

ARSC members and non-members alike are eligible for grants in amounts up to
$1000. Grant funds can be used to underwrite clerical, editorial, and travel
expenses. Funds may not be used to purchase capital equipment or recordings,
to create recordings (including field recordings), to perform operations on
sound recordings, to reimburse applicants for work already performed, or to
support projects that form part of a paid job. Grant recipients must submit
documentation of their expenses before reimbursement. All grant funds must
be disbursed within eighteen months of the grant award.

Applications are reviewed by committee members in an open peer review
process. Committee members are volunteers with expertise in areas of
recorded sound, and all members participate in the review process. Proposals
are evaluated on the extent to which they focus on sound recordings as
research materials or on the sound recording industry, and the extent to
which applications materials meet the format requirements.

Grant recipients are required to submit brief descriptions of their projects
for publication by ARSC, and are encouraged to submit articles about their
projects, for possible publication in the Newsletter or Journal.

Research Grant Applications shall include:
-- a summary of the project (one page maximum), with samples of the work, if
possible;
-- a budget covering the entire project, highlighting the expenses the ARSC
Grant will cover (one page maximum);
-- a curriculum vitae; and
-- an indication of the prospects for publication or other public
dissemination of the project results.

Applications may be sent as an e-mail attachment to Grants Committee Chair
Suzanne Flandreau:
arscgra...@aol.com

Applications must be received by February 29, 2020.

[Phono-L] ARSC Conference 2020: Call for Presentations

2019-10-09 Thread Bill Klinger via Phono-L
The Outreach Committee of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections
(ARSC) posts the following message.

--- 2020 ARSC CONFERENCE: CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS ---
Proposal deadline: January 4, 2020

The Association for Recorded Sound Collections invites proposals for
presentations, posters, and panels at its 54th annual conference, to be held
May 20-23, 2020 at the Delta Hotel in Montréal, Québec, Canada.

ARSC welcomes proposals for presentations, panels, and posters on any aspect
of sound recording. In recognition of our host city, Montréal, we especially
encourage presentations that highlight composers, broadcasters, musicians,
performers, record labels, studios, songwriters, and personalities in
Québec.

In addition, the program committee invites proposals pertaining to:
-- Discographies, record label and/or artist histories, the life and times
of lesser known formats.
-- Documenting watershed moments in history -- either recorded sound history
or through recorded sound.
-- Innovative research, preservation and access projects, community-based
archiving initiatives, digital humanities, cultural approaches to sound
recordings, soundscapes, etc.
-- The challenges of born-digital materials and emerging sound recording
formats and genres (collecting, producing, promoting, archiving, and
curating).
-- Advances in audio production and preservation tools and techniques for
legacy and digital formats.
-- Advancements in audio preservation techniques for physical media from
cylinder to DAT.

We seek presentations and panels that are informative, display a passion for
their subjects, and include compelling audiovisual content. Share your
special interests with our engaged community of collectors, historians,
musicians, preservationists, archivists, and audio engineers.

The deadline for presentation proposals is January 4, 2020. Receipt will be
acknowledged by e-mail. Presenters will be notified of acceptance
approximately one month thereafter.

To submit your proposal, see the Submission Information and Guidelines
Section at:
http://www.arsc-audio.org/conference/2020/ARSC2020_CFP.pdf

IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

-- Presenters must register and pay for the conference. Presenters grant
ARSC the right to record and distribute their conference presentations,
including PowerPoints or other slide shows, unless they specify otherwise in
writing.

-- Please make sure you have a valid passport! Many countries require
travelers to have passports with at least six months of remaining validity
as an entry requirement. Those who do not have a passport or who need to
renew a passport should take appropriate steps as soon as possible to avoid
rush fees.
