Christian, welcome to the list. It is a good place to be. The freshness of beginner's mind is the state we aspire to, otherwise we'd all be using lens cameras exclusively. Even with an optimal sized pinhole, exposure times in sunlight may be so short as to require an actual shutter. I didnt think of it, but now that you mention it, Mike, he coud use a Type 55 Polaroid too, assuming he has 4X5 capabilty on his pinhole camera , that way you could give away prints to the subjects, albeit small, /look at them for exposure correctness, and still be able to produce a 4X5 neg for printing, also assuming you lower the Type 55 rating from its normal ASA/ISO of 50 down to ASA/ISO 25 , which in turn would give blown out highlights, in the print, but get good negatives... I get exposure times of about 4-8 seconds, depending on the light with Type 55, which would allow subjects to remain still I would think I have a Santa Barbara Lensless 4X5 pinhole camera/made of birchwood laminate , (actually I have 2 of them, the 2 FL(50mm, pinhole diameter0.013=F/230) and the 3 FL(75mm, pinhole diameter0.013and F/154) which produce wide to very wide shots, the SB Lensless cameras go for about $75.00 USD for 4X5 and I think you can get them in 8X10 size too,FL 's of SB cameras range from 50mm up to 675mm or 27in FL and F/2000 but of course the price goes up correspondingly, BUT , I have shown my wooden SB cameras to some of the re-enactors , and was told they would fit right in (pretty much ) in keeping with not being obtrusive mechanical beasts/modern equipment , all I need do now, is concoct a wooden tripod of sorts, (Ries tripods would be nice, but at about $500 for the tripod alone, its out of the question right now ) Another route to go in ready mades is Zernike Au's 4X5 pinhole cameras , with extensions/also accepts Polaroid 545i backs, , if I recall right, Zernikes cameras start at about ($95.00 -100 USD ) and depending on what you want, you can add stuff to it, raising the cost of course, but hey, Zernike makes good cameras, as anyone on this list who has one can tell you , and well worth every penny (Oops there I go again, plugging Zero Image/Zernike Au, but hey, I make no apologies for plugging quality items am just plain shameless. :-) Zernike , can I have a job as a sales representative ? smirk dalf...@aol.com
RE: [pinhole-discussion] help with indoor exposures needed
Hi Sarah I'd say much the same as Chuck. Do some experimenting and it's remarkably easy to begin to get consistent indoor exposures, especialy if you stick to the same camera and film combination for a while. After a while, you'll just know the light. Using a Zero 2000, for example, and T-Max 100 film, I have found that about 2 seconds works in full sunlight, and anywhere from 8-30 seconds in various depths of outdoor shadow (and up to about 3 minutes as dark approaches). Indoors, I find that a very brightly lit shop or office (a whole ceiling of fluorescents, for example) requires six to 12 minutes. A bright average interior requires about 30 minutes at least, but my rule of thumb indoor exposure for this camera/film combination is 45 minutes unless the room is VERY brightly lit. Give it a try. Remember, in low light situations, chancing of under exposing are much greater than the chances of overexposing. If in doubt, give it more time. Hope that helps. Colin __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
