Christian, welcome to the list. It is a good place to be. The
freshness of beginner's mind is the state we aspire to, otherwise we'd
all be using lens cameras exclusively.

Thanks Michel,
The newspaper article had a nice picture of me with my workspace with
pinhole cameras and prints in the background. They replaced it on the
web with a publicity for Cadillac. Too bad... Not my doin'...!
Cheers all and happy pinholin'!

Just remember, if you're using an 8x10 filmholder, that 8x10 paper is
bigger than 8x10 film, and you'll need to shave a little off each side
of the paper to make it slide into the holder smoothly.

[pinhole-discussion] IMPORTANT: Policies and Rules

2002-04-08 Thread webmaster

PINHOLE DISCUSSION MAILING LIST POLICIES AND RULES
Document dated: Monday, February 11, 2002

PURPOSE OF THE LIST:
The purpose of the pinhole discussion mailing list is the discussion of any
and all aspects of pinhole photography. All messages sent to this list
should relate to pinhole photography.

THE RULES OF THE LIST:
List membership is a privilege, and list members are expected to treat each
other with proper respect. Personal attacks or flames will not be
tolerated and can get one banned from the list.

If you encounter any problems of any kind in using the list, please notify

pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ???

Please do not send problems you may encounter to the list. The only ones
who can help you solve these problems are the list administrators.

REPLYING OR POSTING TO THE LIST:
Do NOT post messages in HTML format. All postings to the list should be
sent as plain text. Some email programs by default send email messages as
HTML, the MS Outlook Express and Netscape's Communicator are often set up
to send all email messages as HTML. If you use one of these programs or any
mail program that sends email as HTML, please change your setting so that
your messages will be sent as plain text ONLY. Do not post to the list
until you KNOW that you are posting as plain text, and NOT HTML. If you
need help in setting your email program to plain text, please contact one
of the list administrators at pinhole-discussion-admin@p at ???.

Do NOT post attachments. Attachments are not welcome on this list.
Attachments are files that are attached to an email message. They are
large. They usually can only be accessed with a specific program. They can
unintentionally carry viruses. A significant portion of the list is unable
to use attachments. Please do not send attachments to the list. All email
to the list should be sent as plain text. This is the one and only standard
used by all computers and all email programs.

When you reply (using your email program's reply feature) to messages you
receive from the list, your reply will automatically be directed back to
the mailing list and NOT to the person who sent the message. In order to
send a private message back to someone who sent a message through the list
by replying, you must change the To: address from
pinhole-discussion@p at ??? to the individual's e-mail address. It is
ALWAYS a good idea to check who you are sending an e-mail to before sending
it.

To post to this list, send your email to

pinhole-discussion@p at ???

WARNINGS, VIRUSES, ETC.:
There are always a number of hoaxes traversing the net, where one is urged
to email an urgent warning message concerning some catastrophic new virus,
government policy, etc to everyone you know. These are almost always
hoaxes. Do not send copies of these to the list, even if you are sure it is
legitimate.

SUBSCRIBING, UNSUBSCRIBING, and changing PREFERENCES:
To change your subscription for any reason, such as:
· get the digest version of the list,
· temporarily suspend mail (such as when you go on vacation),

If your 4x5 camera will take a Polaroid back, you might want to try
their 3000 ASA film in a 545i holder. Even with an optimal sized
pinhole, exposure times in sunlight may be so short as to require an
 actual shutter.

I didnt think of it, but now that you mention it, Mike, he coud use a Type 55
Polaroid too, assuming he has 4X5 capabilty on his pinhole camera , that way
you could give away prints to the subjects, albeit small, /look at them for
exposure correctness, and still be able to produce a 4X5 neg for printing,
also assuming you lower the Type 55 rating from its normal ASA/ISO of 50
down to ASA/ISO 25 , which in turn would give blown out highlights, in the
print, but get good negatives... I get exposure times of about 4-8 seconds,
depending on the light with Type 55, which would allow subjects to remain
still I would think

I have a Santa Barbara Lensless 4X5 pinhole camera/made of birchwood laminate
, (actually I have 2 of them, the 2 FL(50mm, pinhole diameter0.013=F/230)
and the 3 FL(75mm, pinhole diameter0.013and F/154) which produce wide to
very wide shots, the SB Lensless cameras go for about $75.00 USD for 4X5 and
I think you can get them in 8X10 size too,FL 's of SB cameras range from 50mm
up to 675mm or 27in FL and F/2000 but of course the price goes up
correspondingly, BUT , I have shown my wooden SB cameras to some of the
re-enactors , and was told they would fit right in (pretty much ) in keeping
with not being obtrusive mechanical beasts/modern equipment , all I need do
now, is concoct a wooden tripod of sorts, (Ries tripods would be nice, but at
about $500 for the tripod alone, its out of the question right now ) Another
route to go in ready mades is Zernike Au's 4X5 pinhole cameras , with
extensions/also accepts Polaroid 545i backs, , if I recall right, Zernikes
cameras start at about ($95.00 -100 USD ) and depending on what you want, you
can add stuff to it, raising the cost of course, but hey, Zernike makes good
cameras, as anyone on this list who has one can tell you , and well worth
every penny (Oops there I go again, plugging Zero Image/Zernike Au, but hey,
I make no apologies for plugging quality items am just plain shameless. :-)
Zernike , can I have a job as a sales representative ? smirk

RE: [pinhole-discussion] help with indoor exposures needed

2002-04-08 Thread Colin Talcroft
Hi Sarah

I'd say much the same as Chuck. Do some experimenting
and it's remarkably easy to begin to get consistent
indoor exposures, especialy if you stick to the same
camera and film combination for a while. After a
while, you'll just know the light. Using a Zero 2000,
for example, and T-Max 100 film, I have found that
about 2 seconds works in full sunlight, and anywhere
from 8-30 seconds in various depths of outdoor shadow
(and up to about 3 minutes as dark approaches).
Indoors, I find that a very brightly lit shop or
office (a whole ceiling of fluorescents, for example)
requires six to 12 minutes. A bright average interior
requires about 30 minutes at least, but my rule of
thumb indoor exposure for this camera/film combination
is 45 minutes unless the room is VERY brightly lit.
Give it a try. Remember, in low light situations,
chancing of under exposing are much greater than the
chances of overexposing. If in doubt, give it more
time. Hope that helps.

Colin
