Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Product Announcement - Squeeze Mobile

2009-08-24 Thread Jens_dk

Great application, so I hope it some day will come to work on my setup
also, which is a QNAP TS-119, using SSOTS 3.18 with SC 7.3.3.

I can connect and play a tune for about 2 sec. then it stops. A few
times it wil continue after long time, but then again only for a couple
of seconds.

My wifi connection should be OK, which I can confirm as there is no
ploblen listening to MP3 files from the QNAP TwonkyMedia via UPnP using
PlugPlayer on my iPod Touch. Also I can listen to MP3 files on the iPos
Touch using streams.mp3 from Squezecenter initiated from iPeng.

What I found was, that wnen playing a MP3 file (320kbs) on my
Squeezebox, the QNAP CPU usage is 4,7%. But when playing the same file
via Squeeze Mobile, the CPU usage is 99%.

So what should be done?

Send a PM to the OP ( eflafargue) as he starting trying to modify it.

The plugin is minimal - the main difficulty will be trying to create
IOCTLs to control/read silabs dongles. The Radioshark plugin works for
32 bit distros - the IOCTL data structure may vary depending on 32 bit
or 64 bit kernel.

Since I now have an ADS version, at some point I may look at the issue
but I think it may be a dead end since Silabs are supposed to have
stopped producing the chipset.

Thanks for the tip.

As a matter of interest, where did you save the plugins?

I found that all my active plugins are currently on server/slim/plugins
and not in the Squeezecenter/plugins folder. Therefore intend to use
slim/plugins

Maybe active plugins are currently saved here because I originally
started with Slimserver (2 years ago) and only recently updated to
7.3.3?

Will try complete uninstall of SC, re-install and see what happens.
Perhaps all of the 'slim' folders will upgrade to Squeezecenter.

Frustrating as the Inguz plugin looks very good..

Your server is not able to transcode at the bitrate you selected. Try a
lower bitrate. A common theme with NAS users seems to be they either
don't have LAME or if they do not enough processing power. Someone can
correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the Squeezebox itself can
decode. When you're consuming stream.mp3 however all transcoding needs
to be done server side.

If your CPU is at 99% and telling you 0869: Error writing mp3 output it
can't handle it . As remember not only does it have to transcode it has
to transmit and do whatever else the nas is doing. Seeing that at 128
it's only 3% should be a clear indication to you of what your nas can
actually handle. Also you don't get any benefit transcoding a 128kbp
audio library to 320kbp. That's just making your machine do needless

I think you misunderstood me. I did not try transcoding a 128kbs audio

In both cases, the Squeeze Mobile player was set to 128kbs. The MP3

Sure there is a transcoding problem, but I really do doubt it is a NAS
resource issue, because the TS-119 is easily capable of transcoding
non-native formats when playing through my Squeezebox. Even my TS-109
with less than half the power(CPU: Marvell 500MHz w. 128MB ram) will
have no problem.

The error log lines appearing before the 0869: Error writing mp3

Your nas is telling you that it can't write that mp3 output. I believe
your nas's report. If you can't write it you surely can't expect
Squeeze Mobile to consume and play it. Remember Squeeze Mobile does not
do any transcoding at all it consumes and plays what your Squeeze Center

There are no guarantees.

Mine has survived all upgrades beside the upgrades where the database
engine changed (6.3(SQLite) - 6.5(MySQL) and 7.3(MySQL) - early beta
of 7.4(SQLite) and early beta of 7.4(SQLite) - late beta of
7.4(MySQL)).

You can probably expect a database change between 7.4 and 8.0 as 7.4
will be based on MySQL while 8.0 is planned to be based on SQLite.

If it's important that the data survives a rescan, remember the
situation where the url changes during a rescan due to a moved or
renamed file. In TrackStat I solve this by also storing the
musicbrainz_id and after the rescan I synchronize my tables with the
tracks table based on url and musicbrainz_id values.

However, I suppose you could just retrieve new data from LastFM if a
counter is lost, so lost data might not be a big problem in your case.

At the moment I pass it unadjusted to the the get that fetches the
last.fm data via xml (other than url escaping it).

From the LastFM API it sounds like they want utf8 encoding.

In the LastFM scanning module bundled with Custom Scan I use
escape($artist-name) where $artist is a Slim::Schema::Contributor
object retrieved from the database. Although, I'm not completely sure if
this works correctly or not.

Character encoding could be a mess, there is a Slim::Utils::Unicode

Earlier it was 1 request per second but it seems like they've raised
the limit a bit since I did the LastFM module bundled with Custom Scan.

 [about the two second pause]
That's a long time! My Marantz amp takes ages to produce sound after
being turned on but accepts remote commands almost instantly. Maybe
yours is the same? - I think my pause is around 600ms.

It is a heck of a long time, but unfortunately it is necessary. The NAD
won't react to any other command until it has fired up properly ...

Incidently, I now have (limited) support for LIRC data, and I've got the
back key working (I think!) but for some reason it won't do the popups
:-( It's a minor niggle so the next version may be released with that
 issue still there.

Can't wait to test it :-D

One minor bug: My SBC will not switch to screensaver (analogue clock)
if I leave it in the Squeeze IR menu - so if I navigate to turn up the
volume on my NAD and don't return to the main menu or Now Playing screen
afterwards, the screen will just remain in the menu - can this be
fixed?

And a suggestion for a future improvement:

It would be cool if you could not only assign IR commands to buttons,
but also to existing menu commands. Not sure if this is technically
possible, but I always turn off my SBR when I am done listening by
scrolling down to Turn off [receiver name] on the main menu - and it
would be cool if I could issue an OFF-command to the NAD with the same
key press.

Cheers.

Streaming the same file (MP3 320bps) to my iPod Touch using

FLAC files will however only play for 1 sec using

In none of the cases above I see the error:

But I do see:
0881: Error writing mp3 output
0880: LAME: Can't get TERM environment string.

I accept that the problem is in transcoding and not with the Squeeze

request not dispatchable! only occurs when using SM.

So when I ask for a solution, I am hoping that someone know if the
error LAME: Can't get TERM environment string could be a hint for a

Thanks. I'm not sure I want to enable login as su, as it seems that it
is not recommended for security reasons (though I'm still relatively new
to Ubuntu, so will read up some more about it).

Any idea why the script needs to run this command with su in the first
place? Although running the script asks me for my password, simply
running:

/path/to/MusicMagicServer start works without needing sudo or a
password.

In fact, if I edit the script so that the line that reads:

su - user -c $MUSICHOMEMusicMagicServer start /dev/null

now reads

/path/to/MusicMagicServer start /dev/null

then I can run the script from the command line and it works with no
password. It still doesn't run at boot; but this might be progress.

I get your point. It is not that important. To keep some last.fm
history it would be nice to keep the tables but not important. As
effectively Last.fm operates on an artist\track title key I keep
things at this level. So only if you change the artist or track title
would you loose some last.fm data.

In the LastFM scanning module bundled with Custom Scan I use
 escape($artist-name) where $artist is a Slim::Schema::Contributor
object retrieved from the database. Although, I'm not completely sure if
 this works correctly or not.

Character encoding could be a mess, there is a Slim::Utils::Unicode
module which contains a number of conversion methods but I suppose
 you've already seen that ?

I am already doing what you suggest above. And I agree it is a mess.
Will have a look to see what the scrobbler does when it submits tracks.
If I can find it...

Will do, if there is interest. No point otherwise.

I suppose you are aware of the license limitation that you can only
send 5 requests per second to LastFM ?

I have limited this (in most places) to 1 sec. I looked for the actual
limit in the documentation but could not find it.

Cheers

Streaming the same file (MP3 320bps) to my iPod Touch using
http://address:port/stream.mp3; it does play, but with breaks in the
music all the time (NAS CPU usage 99%).

FLAC files will however only play for 1 sec using
http://address:port/stream.mp3; for my PC (VLC player), or my iPod
Touch, and also in that case NAS CPU usage is 99%.

In none of the cases above I see the error:
 Slim::Web::JSONRPC::requestMethod (383) request not dispatchable!

 But I do see:
 0881: Error writing mp3 output
0880: LAME: Can't get TERM environment string.

I accept that the problem is in transcoding and not with the Squeeze
Mobile, except that the error: Slim::Web::JSONRPC::requestMethod (383)
request not dispatchable! only occurs when using SM.

So when I ask for a solution, I am hoping that someone know if the
error LAME: Can't get TERM environment string could be a hint for a
solution, or if there are something that must be added to the
custom-convert.conf file or some other tricks.

I suggested testing with itunes because it is particular about the
container and format VLC isn't. VLC will decode a kitchen sink. Please
see if you get the same results with itunes if you have it. Then we'll
know for sure.

It's in Slim/Plugin/AudioScrobbler/Plugin.pm and it seems to do the
same thing as far as I can see.

I'm guessing you read the artist name from a Slim::Schema::* object and
not directly using SQL ?

I think it can get more complicated if you use SQL directly to retrieve
things from the standard SqueezeCenter tables. I think I had to do some
extra manipulation in Custom Scan, Custom Browse and SQL Playlist
regarding this. I use SQL directly in some places in these plugins also
when accessing the standard SqueezeCenter tables.

It's in the license agreement you approve to when getting the API key.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Start MusicIP at boot on Ubuntu

2009-08-24 Thread the_arm

the reason why it has the su in there is to run the mmserver as a
nonpriveleged user instead of root. So, it is supposed to switch to
that account when it launches mmserver...so, I can see why it would ask
for a password if you aren't root to start with when you are playing
around with it on the command line.

I'm kinda of a linux newbie too but as I understand it all the scripts
in your /etc/init.d are run by root during bootup. Actually, I think
the symlinks that are found in your /etc/rc*.d are run based on the
runlevel.

Maybe there isn't a symlink in your /etc/rc*.d folder prompting it to
run at start?

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBootupHowto

so, no, you shouldn't have to enable the root login, it was just a way
to see if it worked for you that way or not.

2 other things come to mind:

1) I also installed BUM to make sure that mmserver started before
squeezecenter (just like in that wiki article I linked before)

2) the reason I had to switch to nohup su was because with 9.04
Ubuntu is moving away from the /etc/init.d method to something else,
supposedly. They talk about it in that link above. Maybe on a fresh
install it just doesn't work anymore and I got lucky with the upgrade?

Anyway, it sounds like I'm just leading you on a wild goose chase --
maybe someone with more ubuntu knowledge can jump in and solve it better
than me!

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: SqueezeIR - A Generic Infra-Red Remote Control Applet for the Duet's SBC

Please don't ask me to write functions to support your devices as I

If I remember correctly the IR-receiver in the Squeezebox devices posts
all codes to SqueezeCenter and SqueezeCenter decides what to do with
them. By default it just ignores everything beside the IR commands from
the Squeezebox remote.

Does this mean that it would be possible to make a SqueezeCenter plugin
that picked up an IR signal and translated it to a format that's
supported by the SqueezeIR applet, just to make it easier to configure
SqueezeIR ?

Similar to the learn function available in most universal remote
controls.

Or doesn't the IR receiver in the Squeezebox devices pick up all kinds
of IR signals ?

Thanks. I'm not sure I want to enable login as su, as it seems that it

Try to add this line to your /etc/rc.local file:
/path/to/MusicMagicServer start /dev/null
