Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Finally got all my tracks rated with TrackStat

2009-10-05 Thread lrossouw

I have written a script which may be relevant here.

It imports last.fm playcounts for tracks in one's library. At the
moment it can import specified users or countries and global counts.

These are stored in tables in the mysql database and are then available
for dynamic\sql playlists.

I haven't tested this with 7.4 yet.

I also want to add any playcounts on last.fm that are not on trackstat.
So if last.fm shows more plays add the additional plays to trackstat
data. This will alow you to update your playcounts with plays from
anything that updates last.fm.

I have been and will be travelling lots till November so won't be able
to finish it off before then though...

_theoretically_ I could do it when the menu originates from the

for them would not be nice. tried it early in the 1.2 dev and it wasn't
 very convincing.
You could file a ticket and I'd send around a beta that has it, I
believe the code is still in there...

The discussion was in this thread (if you refer to my similar
request).

No chance of getting both a menu and player controls then, see the
attached image. But seriously the image is not manipulated but shows
what must be a bug. I evoked the song info context screen from the now
playing screen. Did some things there and returned to the now playing
window and voila. The TrackStat rating bar was not there initially but I
tapped to try to make the menu disappear. Only a restart of iPeng
worked. I have not been able to reproduce the issue.

And to revert back to the request for player controls: As long as long
biographies and reviews get truncated in iPeng anyway, this will
compensate somewhat for the limited screen space ;).

Perhaps the important thing is to set the IP address on your PC/Mac to

Hm. Would be really interesting to know how you produced this. I have a

Anyway, if you can ever reproduce it, please let me know.
You don't have to restart iPeng, btw, a back to the main menu and
re-entering NowPlaying should do the trick.

That one is trickier than I originally thought. I suspected that the
height limitation for a cell was a limitation of the UITableViewCell
(the cell it's displayed in) but that's not the case, it's a general
iPhone UI element limitation so I will definitely have to break up the
text and that means re-arranging the whole menu plus I have to find out
_where_ to break up the text. I don't want to get into syntactical
analysis to find a paragraph or end of sentence...

The plugin should have access to the paragraph data from html and I'm

It's software - anything can be done ;-). But I'm not sure I understand:
do you want several separate items instead of one big textarea?!? I'm not

As far as I am concerned you can break up the text wherever you like,
after a certain number of characters, for example. Everything making it
possible to know the whole truth and how the story ends would be better
than just truncating. If it is possible, you could perhaps repeat a
certain number of characters from the first page on the second page.

Could you consider adding a Biography option to the album info context
screen, referring to the designated album artist, for non VA albums?

I thought Ben said that textarea can show up anywhere in a menu, that
sounds like there could be more than one :-)

The link could be a short term option, we tried that once and iPeng
still supports it, I believe.
Back the it was about forward links to similar artists etc. and you
finally implemented within the plugin logic.

iPeng supports an
weblink = url

They are all available in both WMA and Flash/AAC.

Info always helps - are you in the UK or not, System details, OS, SBS
version, BBCiPlayer version and player details would help as some
systems (e.g. NAS)cannot transcode AAC which is the default.

Can you play live national streams from BBCiPlayer ?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on Thecus NAS

2009-10-05 Thread lucaberta

Hi all,

after upgrading to the latest 7.4 module for the Thecus N5200PRO
created by iletunic, I am now trying to debug an issue that I am having
with AlienBBC.

Let me also say that I have a good Unix experience, and have already
fixed scripts in the past. One of the things that I have just done for
this new AlienBBC install is to tweak the mplayer.sh script as the
mplayer executable I am using comes from an old tarfile I had.

Yet, the problem I am facing now comes much before mplayer.sh is even
called, this is the log entry I have:

Code:

[09-10-05 09:40:45.4494] Slim::Networking::IO::Select::__ANON__ (140)

 line 169.
  ; fh=Slim::Networking::Async::Socket::HTTP=GLOB(0xb709fa4)

This is the snippet of PERL code around line 169:

Code:

# Save this metadata for the RTSP protocol handler to use

  if ( my $song = $args-{'song'} ) {
  $song-{'scanData'} ||= {};  --- this is line 169
  $song-{'scanData'}-{$track-url} = {
  avgbitrate = $self-fields-{'avgbitrate'} ,
  endtime= $self-fields-{'endtime'},
  title  = $self-fields-{'title'},
  author = $self-fields-{'author'},
  mimetype   = $self-fields-{'mimetype'},
  };
  }

Not knowing how to proceed, I have turned on DEBUG level logging on
AlienBBC, and this is the additional log I get leading to the error:

Code:

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on Thecus NAS

2009-10-05 Thread bpa

YOu should put your efforts into getting BBCiPlayer working as it is the
preferred BBC player that will get ongoing support. BBCiPlayer uses the
newer BBC streams is more reliable, quicker to start and better audio.
BBC have stopped RealAudio streams for Reagional and local radio
already.

BBCiPlayer uses SBS supported faad to play Flash/AAC and does not have
the mplayer.sh issue. These AAc streams will play natively on Radio and
Touch (i.e. no need to faad to run on the NAS)

thanks for your heads up bpa.

I did a little more research on the new 7.4 features, and it looks like
I might not need to use AlienBBC in the future any longer, since we now
have a BBC application that can be installed in the My Apps menu, and
seems to be working really well.

On the BBC iPlayer, I did not do anything as my understanding is that
the Beeb checks on the IP address location, and prohibits users from
outside the UK to listen to their programs via the iPlayer, not sure if
this has changed lately.

You need ot install AlienBBC 2.6b1 for 7.4
I relied on the automagic install from within SBS, so I did not do any
version checking. I might do some more testing, as the RAI italian
radios are still available in RealAudio format.

Many thanks for your help.

Cheers, Luca

Have you tried different search strings? Could you give me an example?

I've seen the progress bar briefly but it disappears really fast, so I
guess it's fast at caching. I have a really fast server and network.

I can browse by artist, album, new music etc, and all information is
there. When I enter the search page, and I type, let's say dino for
Dinosaur Jr or zep for Led Zeppelin. Usually I hit the search
button but I guess you do not have to do that. The keyboard disappears
and then nothing but the search box at top and an empty result page for
about 5-6 seconds.

Since it finds the information I guess it's local in the app? If I make
the same search again it take just as long to complete.

Also when I quit the app and opens it again, the art work does not
appear to be cached since it has to load again. Is this releted or is
this the way it is supposed to work?

[SlimDevices: Plugins] Biography in Album Info Context Menu

2009-10-05 Thread vagskal

Michael,

On your website, this is in the changelog:

 Changelog
 2.8.2 (07/27/2009):
add support for SC 7.4's AlbumInfo menu

I cannot find any Biography option in the album info context menu on
the Controller or in iPeng. Is there supposed to be such an option,
referring to the biography of the designated album artist, for non VA
albums? If not, any chance of getting such an option?

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Execute Script

2009-10-05 Thread epoch1970

In the cases you describe, OS power management doesn't work properly.
Normally listening to the radio will cause network activity, and the
machine is not idle in this case. Same goes for drive access.
As I recall, my machines PPC, Intel, 10.4, 10.5 never slept to
interrupt a network flow they were serving. I've seen the case you
describe on linux machines, for sure. Actually, I doubt I've seen a
linux machine sleep over drive activity, but everything is possible with
linux :)

Are you streaming from the server, or directly from the players ? Did
you try resetting the firmware on the Mac, or evaluating how it behaves
with a fresh OS (installed on an external drive, for example) ?
Anyway, the newest busy signal of srvPowerControl provides a hook to
a script that could move the mouse or something. I'm not sure
srvPowerControl tries to read back the output of the script.

The current situation for srvPowerControl as I read it is as such:
- on a well behaved machine, that doesn't sleep when its system is
active somehow, srvPowerControl gives the right order at the right time.
With the desktop login/logout hooks, it will even work appropriately for
Desktop machines. The 3 macs I've had over the last few years all had
smart enough activity detection.
- on a machine that is poorly managed by the OS, srvPowerControl works
well for single-purpose servers: remove all PM independent of
srvPowerControl and let it decide alone when to sleep/wake the machine.

For multi-purpose machines (Desktops, audio + file + video server...)
with dubious activity detection at the OS level, either the OS PM or
srvPowerControl will manage to ruin the show.
Personally, I had developed, before srvPowerControl was out, a custom
PM daemon that watches different things on a multi-purpose linux server.
I integrate srvPowerControl mostly as a front-end for user-defined PM
actions in the web GUI and players menus.
That daemon is a lot of awkward and platform/application specific code,
it performs adequately but is none too smart.

I think the silver bullet is in developing dummy a device driver for
SqueezeBox Server. Receiving power events, the driver could block or let
go OS sleep according to what the SBS wants. I had hopes the new control
panels for SBS would include this on OS X and windows but apparently
that is not the case.
I'm not sure a dummy driver with some sort of bidirectional link to
SBS is really complex and hard to maintain. But it is platform-dependent
and has to be written in the language of the OS' device toolkit,
probably C or a derivative.
Volunteers with knowledge of IOKit, D-bus and their Windows equivalent
are needed, first to evaluate this idea.

Anyway, I invite you to check out the srvPowerControl thread regularly.
I am sure that, sometime, somehow, you'll get your machine to operate as
intended.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] AlienBBC on Thecus NAS

2009-10-05 Thread bpa

The BBC apps is the same as 7.3 Internet Radio/More Radio / BBC - they
are just the BBC live WMA streams.

If you are just listening to live BBC streams then for about 12 months
there has been no reason for non UK listener to use AlienBBC as all live
National streams were available in WMA.

BBC made changes in the summer and now BBCiPlayer will work for non UK
listeners as well with 48k Flash/AAC and/or WMA streams as well as
Flash/AAC 48K listen Again for allprograms including Local and regional
so there is no reason for using AlienBBC.

AAC is better quality than WMA for same bit rate.

No. Search queries are always executed on the server. iPeng doesn't
have enough data to do that itself.
I find this a bit strange. There's no change in the actual search query
between 1.1 and 1.2 the only difference is in how iPeng handles the
return values from the search.

Have you probably changed some of the indexing options on the server
(e.g. to search within words instead of just from the beginning)?

No, this is the way it is supposed to work.
iPeng does not reload your artwork from the server but only from the
cache on the iPhone. Yet it makes sure the data is still valid before it
does so, that's where the initial delay comes from. Plus it needs a
little more time to load the covers from the (flash)disc instead of just
accessing them in memory. You see the same thing if you scroll through a
lot of covers (500) then the first ones will be discarded, too.

Instead of calling an API (because there isn't one), the plugin makes

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question on Trackstat and iTunes integration

I was doing my smart playlists in JRMC, but the majority of my

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Execute Script

2009-10-05 Thread danco

I don't think Energy Saver looks at network activity when deciding
whether or not to sleep (see Apple's knowledge base articles) though it
may actually wake from sleep if there is networkactivity. And certainly
the other programs that deal with Energy Saver problems only seem to
look at keyboard and mouse activity.

I've tried lots of things at various times, fresh user, disconnecting
any external USB drives and hubs, resetting Power Management. Nothing
worked, and the various threads on Apple discussions and elsewhere do
indicate that there are many different issues involved. I finally
decided it was not worth investigating further, and that using one of
the third-party programs was by far the simplest answer. Unfortunately
all the programs I have tried prevent sleep only when there is mouse or
keyboard activity, not hard drive activity, and certainly not network
activity.

I will certainly keep looking at svrPowerControl and install it when it
is7.4 compatible.

No, but they need to use the same file paths to the music files. If
they don't have the same file path's you will need to use the iTunes
Statistics Export module provided by TrackStat through Custom Scan.

Just to be clear since I'm not sure iTunes Update does what you want:
- iTunes Update or TrackStat iTunes Statistics Export module: Sends
statistics information from Squeezebox Server to iTunes
- builtin iTunes plugin or TrackStat iTunes Statistics Import module:
Reads statistics from iTunes and updates Squeezebox Server database

So, if you are looking for a way to update Squeezebox Server database
with statistics from iTunes, iTunes Update is probably not what you want
to use.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Announce: BBCiPlayer 0.9 - with UK and Non UK Support

2009-10-05 Thread bpa

With traffic shaping/bandwidth mamagement - I wouldn't expect a no
items in playlist error as that implies a problem getting the basic
playlist info (usually a http response) from the station. Once the
station is connected and tries to play - then traffic shaping can kick
in and so you would get silence or buffering.

I would expect traffioc shaping behaviour to be different if you were
playing WMA stream which play natively on Boom or SB3 (i.e. streams go
from BBC straight to player) whereas the Flash/AAC needs to be
transcoded by SBS (i.e streams go from BBC to PC and then to player).
PC and players have different buffers and TCP/IP so I would expected
different behaviour when traffic shaping is happening.

It would be interesting to see if therer is a difference if proxying is
enabled on SBS for WMA streams.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Question on Trackstat and iTunes integration

2009-10-05 Thread MeSue

Music paths are the same in iTunes and SbS. But I don't use iTunes
integration in Squeezebox server.

TrackStat iTunes Statistics Export module: Sends statistics information
 from Squeezebox Server to iTunes

That's what I am using now, and it's working good for SBS -- iTunes.

The only thing now that's not getting synced up is if I listen to music
on my iPod. When I sync the iPod with iTunes the play counts will be
updated there, but then they won't be updated in Squeezebox server.

I was looking at TrackStat iTunes Statistics Import, but I wasn't sure
if it would overwrite everything in SbS or ONLY update the iPod plays.

If I can't import my iPod play stats to SBS, it won't break my heart,
but it would be cool to have it all sync'd.

Since upgrading to SBS 7.4 on a Vista and XP PC's, only the World

nothing happening. All the live links appear to play. I am located in

only use it in the car and on trips, so it shouldn't be a frequent
thing.

But I'm still unsure of something. In it Custom Scan, it asks for Full
path to iTunes Music Library.xml file to read.

The iTunes Music Library.xml is on a different computer from squeezebox
server, so how is custom scan going to find it? Should I copy it to a
share, import, then copy it back?

That's the idea. I didn't really intend to get into supporting plugins.

When logging info starts to show up, the reasons might become clearer.

You don't need to copy it back because it's not updated.
You need to make it accessible, either by copying it to a share or by
sharing the directory where it currently is.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] Beta: Weather-Screensafer for Controller/Radio/Touch

2009-10-05 Thread bluegaspode

aubuti, as I'm new to the 'weather-business' ;-) thanks for your very
valued feedback.

aubuti;466772 Wrote:
I'm surprised to hear you say that the chance of precipitation is not
available in the data feed, because the WeatherDateTime (WDT) plugin for
the players with VFD screens has that info, and it also gets its feed
 from wunderground.com.

Hhmm - I checked their sourcecode and they use the 'pop'-field (guess
this means' percentage of precipitation') of the forecast, which was
always empty for me :(

See:
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=TXL

if I take some city in the US I get some values indeed
http://api.wunderground.com/auto/wui/geo/ForecastXML/index.xml?query=JFK

This is not fair !

As for other animations, what does a sun with clouds flashing on/off
mean? For example, for tomorrow I'm seeing Clear with just a sun icon
on the wunderground.com site, but for the same location your applet is
showing a sun with clouds flashing on and off. Is that chance of
clouds? The following day is predicted partly cloudy, and the icons on
the web site and your applet are a static sun with clouds, which is what
 I would expect.

In the forecast-XML I get two icons, one called 'icon' and one called
'skyicon'. The icon-field includes the 'chance of'-icons (which are
shown with a question-mark on wunderground.com) but there is only chance
of flurries, rain, snow, sleet and thunderstorms.

So nothing sensible that matches your observation.

If there is such a strange situation again you could help me by doing
one of the following things (whichever is easier for you):
a) go to wunderground-link posted above (but use your location in the
end) and look at the 'icon' and 'skyicon' for the corresponding day.
b) look in the /var/log/messages file on your controller. you will find
infos from the applet there starting with parseForecast - and the
icon-names as well.

Maybe I have some mismatched icons or wunderground is sending strange
data, which we maybe could filter.

To my eye, the main weather icon takes up too much space relative to
the text. In my opinion the icon could be shrunk and either make the
text bigger or add a provision for a third line of data.

On what device are you looking (controller/touch/radio) ?
Unfortunately it's very difficult to provide a good solution for all
three devices (and even the desktop-version with arbitary resolution).

Currently I cut the screen in 2/3 (current condition area) and 1/3
(forecast area). The forecast-area is divided into 3 areas of course.
Then we have 4 areas which are again cut in 2/3 (icon) and 1/3 (text).

As a small (exaggerated) test I cut the icon/text areas in half (see
attached images). You see that this doesn't help much, as the fonts
size/height is determined by its width. Scaling the fonts height would
make look it ugly.
I third line

These screen sizes are really hard to handle :(

Secondly, what about using the whole screen for current conditions, and
making subsequent days available via a button or wheel?
I though about this too. But the nature of a screensafer (currently)
makes this impossible. Whatever button you press (or if you scroll the
wheel) - screensafer is turned off.
I might try to find ways to circumvent this in future releases, but as
my vacation is now over, I won't find much time for such advanced
hacks.

Now I feel bad because I argued against any of your points.

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] iTunesUpdate plugin not working on 7.4

2009-10-05 Thread James

Hi all, thanks for your messages!

I have posted a new version of iTunesUpdate at
http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer that appears to work with 7.4 and
updated the repository
http://www.jamescraig.co.uk/SlimServer/repository.xml to point to this
new version. It should also be backward compatible with v7.3.

Instead of calling an API (because there isn't one), the plugin makes
calls to classes within SqueezeBoxServer. Unfortunately with the 7.4

 I'll prepare another version.

Yay! That's the best news I heard all weekend.

I use XM on my squeezes quite a bit, so a day after discovering that
the current plug won't work I re-installed the older version.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] SQLPlaylist v2.5 - problem with SbS 7.5.0

2009-10-05 Thread Phil Meyer
I upgraded to 7.5/trunk (currently on SVN 28778), and found that WebUI song
info page failed to display.

The error log contains:
[21:09:15.0358] Slim::Web::Template::SkinManager::_fillTemplate (266) Error:
file error - : not found

I raised bug https://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=14557, but it turned
out to be SQLPlaylist (I'm using the latest version 2.5).

Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] SQLPlaylist v2.5 - problem with SbS 7.5.0

2009-10-05 Thread erland

Do you see this on all tracks or just some of them ?
Do you see the problem in several skins or just one of them ?

I'm asking since I'm not able to reproduce it in my own setup.

Are you sure SQL Playlist is causing the problem or could it be that
you have too many plugins installed and SQL Playlist is just the one
that pushes it over the edge ?
If you haven't done so already, could you try to remove a few plugins
(for example Custom Browse) and keep SQL Playlist and see if it still
causes the problem ?

Remember that as long as Squeezebox Server doesn't support changing
ratings without third party plugins, there is always a risk there will
be an API change that makes it impossible to use TrackStat or iTunes
