[libreoffice-projects] LibreOffice 4.4.4 RC1 available

2015-05-30 Thread Robinson Tryon
Dear Community,

The Document Foundation is pleased to announce the first release
candidate of LibreOffice 4.4.4. The upcoming 4.4.4 will be the first
in a sequence of frequent bugfix release for our feature-packed 4.4
line. Please be aware that LibreOffice 4.4.4 RC1 is not been flagged
as ready for production use yet, however feel free to give it a try
instead of 4.4.3.

A work-in-progress list of new features in LibreOffice 4.4 can be
found at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.4

The release is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X from our QA
builds download page at

  http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/

Developers and QA might also be interested in the symbol server for
windows debug information (see the release notes linked below for
details)

Should you find bugs, please report them to our Bugzilla:

  https://bugs.documentfoundation.org

A good way to assess the release candidate quality is to run some
specific manual tests on it, our TCM wiki page has more details:

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests#Full_Regression_Test

For other ways to get involved with this exciting project - you can
e.g. contribute code:

  http://www.libreoffice.org/community/developers/

translate LibreOffice to your language:

  http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/LibreOffice_Localization_Guide

or help with funding our operations:

  http://donate.libreoffice.org/

A list of known issues and fixed bugs with 4.4.4 RC1 is available
from our wiki:

  http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/4.4.4/RC1

Let us close again with a BIG Thank You! to all of you having
contributed to the LibreOffice project - this release would not have
been possible without your help.

On behalf of the Community,

Robinson

[libreoffice-projects] QA Meeting Minutes - 2015-05-06

2015-05-08 Thread Robinson Tryon
Hi all,

Thanks for the great meeting on Wednesday! Meeting minutes are available here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2015/May_06

Our next meeting is taking place in two weeks
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2015/May_20

Interestingly, May 20th also happens to be Metrology Day, dedicated to
the worldwide uniformity of measurement:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Metrology_Day

Goodness knows that QA testing is very non-uniform at times, but we
can definitely strive for consistency and repeatability in all that we
do!

[libreoffice-projects] QA Meeting Minutes - 2015-04-22

2015-04-24 Thread Robinson Tryon
Hi all,

Thanks for the great QA Meeting on Wednesday! Minutes are here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2015/April_22

Our next meeting will be on May 6th:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2015/May_06

We've been facing a tough challenge staying below 300 UNCONFIRMED
bugs, with our count currently back up at 324. By our Bug Hunting
Session for 5.0 in May, I hope that we can bring that number down to
250 (and not have it increase back to 300+)

Here are a few tips to help us get some traction in this space:

1) Make sure the summary is accurate

If the summary is vague, please clarify it. Or ask the reporter to do
so (and put the bug in NEEDINFO)

2) Use NEEDINFO whenever you need info from the reporter

If something about the bug isn't clear, if you need a document for
testing, or if you need repro steps from the bug reporter, please
leave a note and put the bug in NEEDINFO status.

We've added an automatic message that lets the bug reporter know that
they should change the status back to UNCONFIRMED after they reply
and/or provide the requested info or materials.

3) Add repro needs to the Whiteboard

If the bug requires Windows 7 and you don't have it, please put
'needsWin7' in the Whiteboard. If the bug requires a WebDAV server for
testing, put 'needsWebDAV' in the Whiteboard.

Appropriate tagging of UNCONFIRMED bugs will help the rest of QA
narrow-in on those particular bugs that require certain repro
environments, and let us complete triage more quickly and more
efficiently.

4) Use [hard to reproduce] in the Summary if testing with the same setup

If you test a bug using the same software and OS versions as the bug
reporter (e.g. LO 4.3.2 + Win7) and can't reproduce the problem, feel
free to add [hard to reproduce] at the end of the Summary.

This tag provides a visual clue to the rest of QA that this bug is
unlikely to be easily reproduced, and that unless they're looking for
a big challenge, they should spend time triaging other bugs.

Thanks!

 Review strings in context.

Whoever volunteers for this task will need to go through _all_ of the
existing help, UI, and other things, before reviewing strings when they
 are changed.

So basically there's a steep learning curve, but once someone has an
active knowledge of the current text, then they should be able to do
work in small deltas. As long as there's clear documentation about
getting up to speed (and the potential time to do so), the workflow
seems plausible.

 The task requires:
 * Copy editing;
 * Line editing;
 * Proof reading;
 amongst other editing tasks.

Yup, sounds challenging.

FWIW, this also means that the l10n, a11y, and i18n teams will be dumped
with a slew of changes that might, but probably won't affect their
existing translation, but will still need to be verified to ensure that
their translations, etc. are not broken.

I keep on hearing about these big changes. Some of them sound
scriptable, but have there been some that are not? Aside from the
bulk-changes, how many string additions/modifications/etc.. are there
on a weekly or monthly basis?

BTW, does anybody know where the *current* _LibreOffice Manual of
 Style_ can be obtained from?

Once we find it, let's add a redirect here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Manual_of_style

(Or it can live there, if it doesn't have a good home yet! :-)

If it's more of an official-ish document, perhaps this would be a better home:

Hi all,

A big thanks to everyone for the great meeting yesterday!

Minutes and ACTION items are all here:

Our next meeting is scheduled for December 31st, which is in the

we'll be having a totally-optional, totally-relaxed QA Holiday Party.
Feel free to bring a glass or bottle of your favorite drink and just
say hi:

If you need an excuse to slip away from your in-laws for a while, just
mumble something about 'mandatory meeting' to them and find a quiet

For those keeping track on their calendars, our next legitimate
meeting (and the first meeting of 2015) will be on January 14th.

Have a Happy Holidays everyone!

[libreoffice-projects] Re: [Libreoffice-qa] QA Meeting Minutes - 2014-12-03

2014-12-08 Thread Robinson Tryon
On Mon, Dec 8, 2014 at 3:43 PM, Tommy ba...@quipo.it wrote:
if we don't mark it as FIXED WFM how do we distinguish a NEW bug without a
fix from a NEW bug which is FIXED in master but not yet present in the
 stable branch?

Sure -- and this highlights a granularity problem we have with current
bug reports: We only have a binary switch to indicate if a bug has
been fixed or not.

We currently use the Version field to point to the oldest LO version
on which we can reproduce a bug. If we had a 2nd Version field, we
could use that to point to the newest LO version on which we can
reproduce, but IMHO that's still not as granular as I'd like. I've
some cursory ideas for how we can more clearly indicate which
environments (LO version + OS + etc..) reproduce a given bug, which we
can revisit after the Bugzilla Migration.

I think the scenario Robinson depicted is logical.

1- QA finds that a NEW bug in stable branch is somehow fixed in master so it
 marks it as WFM

2- a bibisect attempt is done to identify the committ that fixed it

3- once the bibisect is done, a backportRequest is added to whiteboard and
 devs are contacted

While we do have other work in the QA task pool (triaging incoming
bugs, bibisecting open regressions, etc..), let's see how many fixed
bugs get tagged with bibisectRequest, and see how quickly we're able
to address them. If the number is small, it shouldn't represent much
of an additional burden for QA.

If we just tag a bug with bibisectRequest and resolve it as WFM, I
think bibisecters might ignore it, so I suggest that we tag it
bibisectRequest + backportRequest at the same time. To help us keep
track of these bugs, I've added two entries to the Useful Queries
page:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Bugzilla/Useful_Queries#Common_Lists_of_Bugs
1) Backport requests that need bibisection
2) Backport requests that do not need bibisection (i.e. needs dev attention)

How do we decide which bugs to tag? I suggest that for now we only tag
backportRequests if the bug was reported against an active Still or
Fresh branch.

So to put that into context with our current builds, here's my proposal:

If you test a bug reported against 4.3 and find
1) It's fixed in master, AND
2) It's not fixed in 4.3.5.1 (the latest build on the 4.3 branch)

Then change status - WFM, and add bibisectRequest backportRequest
to the Whiteboard.

For all other cases, if it's fixed in master, then (just) change status - WFM.

[libreoffice-projects] QA Meeting Minutes - 2014-11-19

2014-11-19 Thread Robinson Tryon
Hello!

This week we had another great QA meeting! We covered a number of
different topics, and brainstormed some ideas about how we can
encourage better communication, identify potential regressions earlier
in the release process, and attack our set of open bugs from a bunch
of different angles! :-)

Thanks to all of your hard work, we saw another precipitous drop in
our UNCONFIRMED bug count this week, dropping below 600 before
settling around 615. Getting that number down and *keeping* it down is
a really important piece of us being able to respond to new bug
reports in a timely fashion. I can't wait to see the numbers in
December!

All the gory details are available on the wiki/in the meeting notes here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2014/November_19
http://pumbaa.documentfoundation.org/meetbot/libreoffice-qa/2014/libreoffice-qa.2014-11-19-18.41.html

Our next meeting is in (surprise, surprise!) 2 weeks:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2014/December_03

Here in the US we'll be celebrating Thanksgiving next week. For all
those who live elsewhere in the world, it might be hard find turkey

[libreoffice-projects] LibreOffice 4.3.2 RC2 available

2014-09-22 Thread Robinson Tryon
Dear Community,

The Document Foundation is pleased to announce the second release
candidate of LibreOffice 4.3.2. The upcoming 4.3.2 will be the second
in a sequence of frequent bugfix release for our feature-packed 4.3
line. Please be aware that LibreOffice 4.3.2 RC2 has not been
designated as ready for production use yet, however we do encourage
you to try it out.

A work-in-progress list of new features in LibreOffice 4.3 can be
found at https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.3

The release is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X from our QA
builds download page at

  http://www.libreoffice.org/download/pre-releases/

Developers and QA might also be interested in the symbol server for
windows debug information (see the release notes linked below for
details)

Should you find bugs, please report them to the FreeDesktop Bugzilla:

  https://bugs.freedesktop.org

A good way to assess the release candidate quality is to run some
specific manual tests on it, our TCM wiki page has more details:

http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests#Full_Regression_Test

For other ways to get involved with this exciting project - you can
e.g. contribute code:

  http://www.libreoffice.org/community/developers/

translate LibreOffice to your language:

  http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/LibreOffice_Localization_Guide

or help with funding our operations:

  http://donate.libreoffice.org/

A list of known issues and fixed bugs with 4.3.2 RC2 is available
from our wiki:

  http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/4.3.2/RC2

Let us close again with a BIG Thank You! to all of you having
contributed to the LibreOffice project - this release would not have
been possible without your help.

Cheers,

[libreoffice-projects] QA Meeting Minutes - 2014-08-27

2014-08-27 Thread Robinson Tryon
Hiya,

We tried a new shorter-format QA Meeting in IRC today, and I think it
went pretty well. We reviewed our QA stats, touched on some upcoming
events, and had a chance for everyone to bring up their own topics.

Meeting minutes are here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2014/August_27#IRC_Minutes

New Meeting Time?
A few of our QA Team members aren't able to make the current meeting
time on Wednesdays, so if you'd like to change the time (or keep the
current one), please respond to the 'QA Call Time' thread on the QA
mailing list.

If we don't move our meeting time before then, our next meeting will
happen in exactly two weeks from today:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Meetings/2014/September_10

I look forward to seeing all of you there!

And the biggest question in my opinion is: How to update stuff? Do you need a

Should be review the submit form etc

Let's see... so we have some geo-information about the US/Canada people here:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/US/Members

That page uses a pretty consistent format that could be scraped and
translated into lat/long coords. We could expand into as many other
countries as you like.

I would suggest that people not add their full personal addresses to a
public resource, or even to a private db that pumps out precise GPS
coords, just for privacy considerations. For the US list we have City
(or region) and State, and I think that's probably going to give us
accurate-enough points to place on a map.

So for the database work I would need some help, I do not know how the
database design should work, but finding some people which help here might be
 good ^^

@all: OSM or GMaps? Anyone with a helping hand?

If a lightweight solution like TDF Wiki + scraper + OSM overlay sounds
good, I might know a couple of people who could help out with that.

Hi William,
A few notes.

* Have you considered typesetting the weekly news using LibreOffice?
Is it easier to pull-in refs using LaTeX?

* Q/A - QA

* For slightly better flow when reading, perhaps:

LibreOffice Weekly News gathers interesting developments from
discussions on mailing lists and IRC, updates in QA, and git commits,
and combines them into a tidy publication at the end of each week.
This summary will emphasize a developer's point of view. This week in

New! QA Monthly Chat

If you haven't been able to attend our regular QA meetings, we're
thinking about adding a monthly chat sometime in the afternoon/evening
for the North American crowd. This would be more informal than our
biweekly meetings, and a great place for people to get more involved
with QA or just to get to know the members of the QA Team.

If you're thinking about inviting someone to join, please let them
know that there are a bunch of beginner tasks -- no programming or QA
experience is necessary! Plus, mentors are available to help beginners
out.

For more information, please email the QA list or Joel.
